| kbrookman12-23-06, 01:09 AM | I have been thinking about starting a home-brew campaign and DM'ing a couple of times a month. I have most of the things I need, but one of the things that keeps me from starting, is my lack of miniatures or tokens. I have the battle mat - but nothing to go on it. Is there some way I can get the basics to start a lower-level group fighting many of the creatures in the MM1? I have tried looking on e-bay but most of the sets there are rares and newer stuff - I just really need the basic types like: Ogre, Orc, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Ruffian, Gnoll, Rats, etc.... In other words the basics. Are there sets or places that I can pick and choose the minis I need? I don't want my lack of tokens (which I find a really cool part of the game when used right) to keep me from trying a campaign and DMing. I suppose I could spend up to a few hundred on a picking up the beginner stuff. Is it possible to do? Thanks in advance!! |

I have quite a number of the metal ones - check the ones near colleges. Unfortunately, some D&D players chose to dump their D&D materials at the nearest pawn shop, bookstore, etc. I bought many a book and module near a college. I use sculpy. With a base paint and then the real stuff, voila, I have my own figurines (I prefer enamels). It takes some time to get good at creating your own. Keep it simple - doesn't need great details. The oven works but the smell takes some getting used to. I suggest a cooking stone (I use a pizza stone) instead of glass for your cooking surface (it also works as your modeling table, too so no transferring it to another surface). Don't use your own personal cookware. I used a glass breadpan of my wife's - big mistake. You can't use it for food later. I can't get the stuff off the glass so now I own one and she has a new one. After you do a figurine you like, press sculpy on both sides to create a mold and put it in the oven. Now you can make more of the same figurine. Thin Wire can be bought at the hobby stores. This'll hold arms, long necks, and such to your sculpture. |

Thanks the color counters - that should be good enough to get started - at least the group will know what they are looking at and provides some realism. |

My favor seller is Cyriss, who has a lot of minis as low as .40 each. Great for loading up on multiples of basic humanoids and undead that you will use a lot. If you buy any randomized minis by the box, set the rares aside for trade, since there are folks who need them to complete their collections who have lot of extra commons and uncommons to trade. |

The common figures sold for between $0.10 and $0.15. Common figures are also sold for D and D on websites. Some gaming shops also sell bulk common figures. IF you go to a gaming stop and they don't sell figures, you could ask someone if they know of anyone who sells common figures. I picked up 100 figures for $10. This should be more than enough for most campaigns. |
