I'm supposed to be starting in a campaign for D&D today after I get off work and am still trying to come up with ideas for a character.

I normally play a rogue, but am up for other ideas if someone can come up with a good idea for a character. haha

The thought that DM and I currently have in mind is for me to be a Rogue Dwarf that is cynical as hell.

Since they have yet to have a cynical character in their party.

Either way I'm thinking of sticking with the cynical aspect of it all but I'm not stuck on having to be a rogue like some people I've previously played with are stuck with the class that they are....

How about the illusionist/rogue or bard/rogue who uses his magic to make people believe what he want? You can give him an constant, deceptive smile. Nobody should know exactly what he thinks. Give him spells like: charm person, hypnotism, disguise self, silent image, detect thoughts... ;)

Yeah that sounds like an interesting idea.

What race would you recommend for the Illusionist/Rogue though?

Also is there anywhere's you know of online that I can check out some of the different classes since I don't have access to any of the books right now..... haha

A gnome will work perfect, I think :D.

For the information, you can take a look at SRD (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html).

Play a Bequiler if you have the PHB2.

Or work toward Arcane Trickster with the Wizard<Illusionist.>/Rogue.

Dwarf still works fine for either concept.

I'm not familiar with the Bequiller.

I don't think a Gnome would work if I want to stick with being cynical.

I'm leaning towards a Rogue with Prestige Classes of Arcane Trickster and/or Shadowdancer.

Not sure which race yet though

I don't think a Gnome would work if I want to stick with being cynical.

Why? It's very boring being stereotypical all the time :). Maybe the gnome grows in the slums of a human city.

But if you're not sure, you can go to the dwarf, but you will a hard time justifying the interest of the dwarf in magic. You could try an elf, or a half elf for a cynical/arrogant route.

You tell him not to be stereotypical about Gnomes & then bring up the old "Dwarves don't like magic" stereotype?

No, I said it could be more difficult to justify a dwarf mage, than a cynical gnome, that's all ;).

I played once a dwarf mage/loremaster in an Eberron campaign and enjoyed it a lot, but it took long to make him consistent.

My husband has a cynical, bit of an SOB, gnome fighter as a backup character. I'm sure my nearly stereotypical, if slightly clumbsy around potions, cheerful gnome rogue will be thrilled . I really hope his dwarf doesn't die...

I don't mean to be an ass; but wouldn't this be more suited to the charater op or the what's a player to do boards? Also, don't worry about racial stereotypes; they are just as bad in DnD as they are in real life. Not all halflings are theives, not all drawves are drunks, etc. I once played a Drawf wizard who had no beard, he shaved it, and didn't drink. Anything is pausible as long as you have a reason. A halfing paladin would be funny.

A Beguiler is in the PHB2. Sort of a Wizard/Rogue, with a limited spell list, mostly enchantment charm, that would make s very good character.

If the party has a Rogue, he can specialize in what the other Rogue doesn't. If the pary has a Wizard, especially if the other wizard has lots of damage spells, he is the charmer, etc.

Yeah, the beguiler is pretty cool; but kinda ineffective at higher levels.

I keep a list of all the cool character concepts I come up with and want to eventually play so I don't forget. Here's my current list:

-Dwarf War-Cleric
-Human barbarian modeled off of Norse vikings
-Air Genasi Swashbuckler/Duelist
-Knife throwing Fighter/Rogue/Invisible Blade
-elemental arcane caster (specializes in only fire spells, or only ice spells or something similar)
-Human monk/drunken master
-Ogre Mage Eldritch Knight
-High Int fighter
-Wizard with no damage dealing spells
-Dual wielding bastard sword Swordsage

As for the rogue idea, one of my favorite characters was a rogue with an 18 Int/16 Cha but only a 12 Dex. Made for great role-playing. He was all about the information gathering, and messed around a lot with UMD and feint.

if you want to play a cynical character there was a bard varient that essentially ives the enemies a penalty instead of your allies a bonus. And your perform could be oratory. meaning you just shout demoralizing things at the enemy until they leave. i dont remember where i saw this, thinking one of the dragon magazines but that just sounded like a cool character to play. i was going to but dont have a campaign to do it in...

The Harbringer..look on Crystal Keep for it. I don't think it is as powerful as the Bard, but kinda cool.

If your not stuck on rogue, how about rangeer?

With a *****-load of bastard swords

LARGE Bastard Swords.

MAGICAL large bastard swords.

With the throw anything, oversized TWF, and brutal throw feats.

and those gloves that increase the range increment to 30ft and gives your weapons returning

You would be a walking weapons platform.
