As I stated in the survivor thread, I finally realized that the whole core prc thing just doesn't work well for DS. Worse yet, I've recently got the feeling that it somehow detracts from DS as I worked on converting the rest of the series. Therefor, I've converted the Brute, Kestral, and Survivor over to normal prcs for Dark Sun use. The original versions are still available on request. As always, comments are welcome.

Kestrel (prestige class)
Fast and agile like the bird that gives them their name, kestrels emphasize speed and dexterity. Whether through natural talent or rigorous training, a kestrel possesses superb reflexes and raw speed. Survival, for a kestrel at least, is keep one step ahead of everything around her. Elves and half-elves are natural kestrels, since they already have the necessary Dexterity and cultural predisposition. Halflings and humans are also quite commonly kestrels, since halflings share the same heightened Dexterity as half elves and humans are simply diverse enough that at least a few end up on every path. Aarakocra also make fine kestrels, especially with the advantage that flight gives them. Surprisingly, there are few thri-kreen kestrels, mainly do to the aggressive nature of kreen culture.
Hit Die: d8.

Requirements
To qualify to become a Kestrel, a character must fulfill all of the following criteria.
Base Attack Bonus: +2
Skills: Balance 3 ranks, Jump 3 ranks, Tumble 3 ranks
Feats: Acrobatic, Dodge

Table 3-x: The Kestrel
Level Atk Fort Ref Will Special
1 +0 +0 +2 +0 Acrobatics, Fast Movement
2 +1 +0 +3 +0 Bonus Ability Point

4 +3 +1 +4 +1 Bonus Ability Point
5 +3 +1 +4 +1 Bonus Feat

AC Speed
Level Bonus Bonus

2 -- +5 ft.
3 +1 +10 ft.
4 +1 +15 ft.
5 +2 +20 ft.

Class Skills
Kestrel have the following skills as class skills: Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Escape Artist (Dex), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Move Silently (Dex), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sleight of Hand (Dex), and Tumble (Dex).
Skill points per level: 4 + Intelligence bonus

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Kestrel prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Kestrels are proficient in all simple weapons and all light armors. They are not proficient in shields of any sort.
Acrobatics: The kestrel gains a +2 competence bonus to all Balance, Jump, and Tumble checks. Also she can always take 10 on Balance, Jump, or Tumble checks, even when circumstances would normally prevent her from doing so.
Fast Movement: The kestrel trains constantly to improve her speed, gaining an enhancement bonus to her movement rate as shown on table 3-x. This increased speed is lost, however, if the kestrel is wearing heavy armor or carrying a heavy load.
Defensive Agility: By 3rd level, the kestrel has learned to avoid blows in combat. She gains a dodge bonus to her AC as shown on table 3-x. This bonus only applies is the kestrel is wearing no armor or light armor.
Bonus Feats: At 3rd level, a kestrel can choose a bonus feat from the following list of bonus feats: Agile, Athletic, Combat Expertise (Improved, Disarm, Improved Feint, Improved Trip, Whirlwind Attack), Combat Reflexes, Deft Hands, Fleet of Foot, Flick of the Wrist, Improved Initiative, Lightening Reflexes, Mobility, Nimble Fingers, Point-Blank Shot (Improved Precise Shot, Manyshot, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Shot on the Run), Quick Draw, Rapid Reload, Run, Skill Focus (in class skills only), Spring Attack, and Weapon Finesse. The character must meet the prerequisites for any feat that she selects. A kestrel receives an additional bonus feat at 5th level.
Bonus Ability Point: At 2nd level, the kestrel’s emphasis on physical training enables her to increase her Dexterity by one point. The kestrel receives an additional bonus Dexterity point at 4th level.

[B]Still haven't figured out the :censored: formating in the code box.
It is all about the preview post button and the space bar when you have items within code tags.

It looks cool.

It would be some super freaky stuff to see a Thri-kreen Barbarian (or as I refer to them as Hack'em Masters- I still think Jon should change it!), maxed out in this class. They would have like a 70 movement and +7 to their Dex score without any level modifications or magic items. Go speed racer! Go!

:OMG!

That would do an insane kreen elf-hunter.

Or a big bug bomb!

Just imagine the adventures that could come about as the result of an elven bard inventing/discovering an alchemical poison that's really effective against kreen (and only kreen). I think I gave myself an idea  (My players are gonna hate me :D ...more).

By the way, is the class name supposed to be kes'trekel?

The name kestrel is from my homebrew campaign. I considered changing it to kes'trekel (since they're similar sounding), but kes'trekels don't seem to be too fast of flyers, especially since they're scavengers. I'll gladly take any alternative name you can give me though :)

Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember ranike (some sort of weed that kreen hate the smell of when its burning?). Can you (or anyone actually) refresh my ailing memory? Please? :weep:

This is not something I've seen before..."core prestige class"? Ability score requirements are also supposed to be a no-no.

I assume that by "core" Khaine means that classes and prestige classes that he describes as such are made for generic D&D and not specifically for DS, requiring some adaptation.

The second core PrC I use, retrofitted for DS.

I don't think that restriction was ever really justified, and he explained the meaning of Core Presitige class in the last thread for one. It's core in that you can start at 1st level and it a prestige class because it has requirements to get in. As for the ability score restrictions being a "no-no": while it is true in a technical sense that there are no ability score requirements for any of the core classes found in standard D&D WotC published material, its not explictly banned as far as I know. Besides, many of the classes effectively have a minimum reqiurement to get into, such as spell casters who cannot cast any spells unless their key attribute is high enough. I mean, whats the point in being a wizard with an intelligence of 9 or even 10 for that matter (Zero-level spells :cheer: ). With the core classes as presented in the offical WotC D&D sources there is no reason to list a minimum attribute because it is implicit in the design, but with the classes that Khaine has developed with the aid of the d20 modern system there would be a reason to take a Class that favored your worst attribute.

If you'll look over the class again I think you'll see why  . Plus, it just wouldn't make any sense to allow a clumsy character to gain all of these dexterity based advantages :D .

You miss the point. Prestige classes don't have ability score requirements either.

Good eye! Sharp wit. But the rest of my statement still stands I think, and I didn't say what kind of requirements, just requirements. :P

Besides, similar to what I said before while they may not Technically have ability score requirements, most of them effectively do through the requirement of certain ability dependant feats (such as Dodge, Combat Expertise, Power Attack, etc.) or the requirement of being able to cast a certain level of a certain type of spells, which would require an ability score for the primary attribute of at least 10+spell level required.
Ruhl-Than Sage

The classes could be set up to require a feat that required a 12 (or the standard 13) in the appropriate ability score for its prerequisites, but that would just be silly.

I thought about that aspect, but rather than give you a free point, I would let you deduce that on your own. Good work. Still doesn't change the fact that ability scores aren't acceptable as prerequisites on their own, just as a subrequirement for the actual requirement - which is feat expenditure.

So to circumvent further mental ambushes by the powerful and mighty Oracle, make the prerequisite Dodge, because it is known that wih this feat, one may avoid being the prey and perhaps become the hunter!

Yup, Rhul-Than Sage is right, I refer to it (and the Brute) as core because it can be taken at 1st level, prestige since it has a requirement. I should have explained that better in this post too though (guess I just got lazy again :( )

The reason I gave ability score requirements to these classes is two-fold. First, like Rhul-Than Sage said, is to prevent people with low ability score from taking a class that, in essence, represents the possible benefits that can be derived from having a higher ability score. Second, I wanted these classes to be available at 1st level, mainly due to the fact that I got tried of every low level NPC thug being a 1st level warrior or whatnot. Thats also why I went for a 12 in the relevent ability score as a requirement instead of the standard 13. These classes basically represent overdeveloping a specific ability, so if the character continues to take levels in the class there is no "stopping on the evens" like there would be for feats. If I used a feat as a prerequisite, that would effectively mean that the class couldn't be taken at 1st level (making them normal prestige classes, albiet with low entrance requirements).

Normally I don't use ability scores as requirements for PrCs (as you'll see when I start posting real PrCs), these being the exception to the rule. I do have a nasty habit of going overboard on skill and feat requirements though ;)

Don't have it yet, but its on the list.

I would require higher Skill ranks in the Prerequisites like so:
Skills: Balance 4 ranks, Jump 4 ranks, Tumble 4 ranks

I'm not sure why Climb was even included as a prerequisite.

If you take Agile off of the Prerequisite feats and add Dodge, you can drop the requirement of Dex 13. The balance bonus you get from that feat makes a lot of sense for its inclusion as a prerequisite, but the escape artist bonus seems less pertainent to the class concept. Also, Dodge helps explain the AC bonus you get in the class. A nice tie in there I think ;) .

Of course if you make this change you'll need to add Agile to the list of bonus feats and remove Dodge.

All the class abilities look awesome, though you might consider adding some Archery feats to the list of Bonus feats available, I would suggest adding: Point-Blank Shot, Rapid Shot, Precise Shot, Shot on the Run, and Rapid Reload
