you think that's crazy, imagine if the deathspider were to spin in place ;)

i could really see that as being a way to do unpleasant things to the target ship...

(incidentally, relating to your posts in the SJML, which i haven't quite worked out how to respond to, perhaps there's a lot of internal rigging in spelljammer ships to help deal with what happens when all of a sudden down becomes up, such that the rope becomes what holds everything in place rather than the regular structure)

One problem was that the deck plans occassionally put gravity planes in odd places, a lot of ships had the gravity plane at the bottom of the hull (which would prevent some of the problems Silverblade highlighted, i.e. gravity reversing in the lower hull), though how the plane got that low is not usually explained. While some ships had gravity planes in very odd positions.

As Jaid says, spelljamming ships could be built to take shifting gravity planes (especially the small ones), which implies that groundling ships probably need a fair amount of re-inforcement before they're 'spaceworthy'.

The other problem with gravity is that you can't use it to create planetary orbits, in fact why planets orbit in Spelljammer is largely unexplained[1], they just do, apart from those that don't.

[1] except for spheres with 'Star Beasts', none of which have actually been documented, except, possibly, Faeriespace.
