| Silverblade The Enchanter09-23-07, 02:42 PM | Rebuilt the Man-O-War ship, first got into 3d modellign to make the Spelljammer ships as I adored them ;) First modelling of this was back in about 2002, so was pretty crude. This page shows the work from back then to now, older stuff on bottom. http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/sj/htm/manowar.htm -New versions of the SJ ships I do decking/inetrnals, so I can make deck layouts/plans to help gamers visualize the insides, and also to fix the many problems/errors that existed (plus I can use 'em in me cartoon story). The original external artwork paintings were amazing, but they didn't gel with deck plans, often being wildly different or simply unworkable. -Original artist was Jim Holloway, fyi, much respect to him! :) Modelled in Rhino, UVMapper for UV layouts (how the images fit onto the model), Paint Shop Pro for texture and post work, Poser for the fella on the deck :) http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/sj/manowar/manowar_2007b.jpg |
| Nightdruid09-23-07, 02:58 PM | Fantastic. I love the texturing on the hull...very organic. A work of art. Well done! Btw, when can we expect wall-paper sizes on it ;) |
| Silverblade The Enchanter09-23-07, 04:17 PM | Cheers! :) alas, I make them wallpaper size for MY pc ;) 1028x960, I cannot reproduce that exactly at other sizes as re-sizing the pic smaller doesn't look as good in Paint SHop pro (I'll have a go with Photoshop), and there's post-render work done to add swirls etc to the gas giant, best I can therefore do is crop down http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/sj/manowar/manowar_2007b_1024.jpg Alternately, just right click the big pic, set a sbackground, and it will resize itself down to desktop size ;) :) ALso this is original verison I was workign on without the planet: http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/sj/manowar/manowar_2007a.jpg |
| Nerik09-24-07, 07:24 AM | Beautiful, simply beautiful! Charles |
| Silverblade The Enchanter09-24-07, 02:08 PM | Ta, Charles! :) |
| Carmine_the_Wolf09-26-07, 06:00 AM | Really brings the setting and the ships to life; makes me wish that this kind of cg art had been widespread when TSR brought out the original setting, might have really made Spelljammer stand out as something special in the D&D universe. |
| Silverblade The Enchanter09-26-07, 06:49 AM | Carmine the Wolf, Aye, I've wanted to make SJ come alive..I got into 3d modelling largely so I could do that :) SJ didn't "click" because too many folk sitll saw "space = Star Trek", which was so very wrong. Much as I loved original Star Trek, 1st three Star Wars films etc...folk have been conditioned ot think THAT = space. But fantasy does not = reality. Folk need to see things like my art to just change their views :) The original SJ artists rocked, fantastic stuff, but they were fighting against that whole star trek/star wars mind set, alas. |

The two things that made me think that SJ had a real potential for a comeback were the first Pirates of the Carribean movie and Firefly. The former because it breathed new life into the pirate genre and the latter because it focused on a small party of "adventurers" on a cobbled together vessel right out on the literal frontier of space. I agree wholeheartedly that as far as the setting is concerned, ST/SW pulls in the total wrong direction. |
| Silverblade The Enchanter09-30-07, 09:39 PM | Aye, Pirates of the Caribbean gives it potential, since it took us into "fantasy with ships" (it's most definately fantasy, lol) :) |
