Hey guys,

was surfing around and noticed some astronomy news with some really neato pictures. This got me thinking: what photos would make excellent SJ-related photos? Anyone want to share photos that would be inspirational to SJ?

Here's a couple I've found that I think are really neat:

A really nice fire-ring, perhaps a ring of two dozen size B fireworlds:

A beholder nebula, perhaps...(reminds me a little of Unicron ;) )
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040305.html

I can almost see a titanic, nebula-like bird with this one:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040302.html

A view from an asteroid or outer world (Specter of Greyspace, perhaps).

Hmmm, maybe a world of golden waters?

The Eye of a terrible god ala Sauron...:D

Anyeone else know about like images?

hm
if there was interest, I could do renderings of my 3d SJ ships, as 2d images in .tif or .psd format, that folk could then insert into images like those? :)

sure, please do so! being able to insert rendered ships in selectable backgrounds would be the wet dream of every handout-crazy game master! :D

k, that's something I'll work on then! :)

gotta make hammerhsip, Mosquito and re-do Man-O-War and do the Spelljammer itself in 3d, lol.

As a sideline to creating a 3D flow map in Astrosythesis, I've produced a few low-res (360 × 180) texture maps of Spelljammer planets which I'm happy to make available to anyone who wants them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should post them? (Photobucket, Flikr, etc).

I don't know the others, but flickr is easy to use, even when you have only the free account.

I have three palents on my site in 2d format, 2 1/2 meg file.

dead planets though, not green worlds, delete red surrounding them to leave planet, they are in .jpg format.
put them up years ago

Ok, I finally gor round to trying this, lets see if it works:

Firstly: Toril (http://www.flickr.com/photos/10371694@N06/871189735/) (needs some work - too flat!).

Then: Krynn (http://www.flickr.com/photos/10371694@N06/871189671/)

Finally: Oerth (http://www.flickr.com/photos/10371694@N06/871189663/)

All were done using Fractal World Explorer from Nbos software. Although the Krynn map was touched up with the GIMP (I needed to add a red sea and a realy biiig volcano!).

Any comments on these, or ideas on improving them are welcome.

Ok, I've re-done Toril and added Anadia, Karpri and Selune. They're all here:

Those are great space pictures. I went hunting for some space character art and found these pages:

Space elves:
http://www.absolutearts.com/cgi-bin/portfolio/art/your-art.cgi?login=alternateearth&title=Space_Elf-975358137t.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/ewoodward3/

They are not bad, although like the SJ box covers they look imposible.

This is another impossible (but nice) bit of artwork:

She could be a human-like starbeast.

I found a Gnome Space Chart, but was very disapointed:

All of these look pretty cool Charles.

Can you wrap them around a sphere and make them slowly rotate (for something like an animated GIF)? There are already a couple of these on Beyond the Moons, but if you are making maps of all the planets, you could give BtM a complete set.

What sort of scale are you using? I think that it would be worth either making these maps at a larger scale (so that people can fill a screen with the map or a rotating image of the planet)...

...or...

...using the size of the planet to make maps to the same scale, so that BtM could have a page for each crystal sphere that has rotating animated GIFs of all the planetary bodies in the sphere that show them in the correct proportion.

I notice that you have sometimes given the name of the crystal sphere, but othertimes left it out. This was one of your best descriptions: "Coliar, a Gas Giant/Air world in Realmspace"

I don't know if you are aware, but search engine robots, like Googlebot, will index all of the words in your descriptions, so people searching for "Coliar" or "Realmspace" could find that picture.

I think it might be worth you coming up with a standard format for your text descriptions that mentions the planet and the crystal sphere or the moon, planet and crystal sphere. (i.e. "Selūne - Moon of the planet Toril in Realmspace")

If you do something like that (or maybe even something slightly longer with more information) then more people could find your pictures.

Are you just after nebula? I'm sure that there will be a webpage out there with a complete list of pictures of nebula.

There might also be one with a complete list of pictures from a particular telescope (like Hubble).

Here is a pic of the Witches Head Nebula:

http://www.tedwolfe.com/Gallery/ImagesForWeb/Witch%20Head%20Nebula%20-Final%20Color%20Small%20Star+%20Star%20C olor.jpg

(I tried to put in a link, but vBulletin was stopping the URL of the JPG from working. Weird. You can see more space images on this page (http://www.tedwolfe.com/Gallery/ImagesForWeb/).)

I think that sort of effect could be done with a nebula that looks more like one of the D&D creatures known in wildspace.

Mind you what is a nebula? I know that stars are objects on the crystal sphere, but I'm not sure there is a universal rule for nebula. If they keep their place in the sky then they remain relative to the stars. So they would either be a discolouration of the sphere wall, a physical object on the sphere wall (like a gas cloud that spreads the light of the stars) or an object away from the sphere wall that orbits at the same size as the sphere wall.
