1001 Steampunk Sources [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-06-08, 11:07 PM Seeing as how VSF* ideas and sources are from all over the place, I figured I'd start a thread to try and collect as many as I could.

A game from about 2005, its lackluster success hides some of the best Steampunk stuff you can find.

I'll put some more up later, but feel free to add whatever you think would help create a good Steampunk setting.

Victorian Science Fiction, more commonly known as Steampunk to those that don't know what a Difference Engine is.

03-09-08, 11:44 AM I remember that game. It was excellent! I'd say my favorite units were the juggernaughts, cause it's just cool to see a line of them rolling across the screen killing anything in their way.

03-09-08, 12:03 PM Victorian science-fiction and steampunk are not the same thing. VSF is sci-fi from a Victorian point of view, utilising Victorian-era knowledge of science to extrapolate a possible future. Steampunk (which should really be called retrotech, or some other portmanteau) is the replacement of electricity by steam as the primary power source for technology, which leads to steam-powered prosthetics and mech. They overlap in places, but neither can be reduced to the other.

Anyway, to contribute to the thread:

[2] The upcoming Edge of Twilight (Flash website) (http://www.edge-of-twilight.com/) game. Nothing much except some concepts on the site right now, unfortunately, but still better than nothing.

[3] The whole Thief series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief_%28computer_game_series%29), particularly the second opus. That's a wiki link, but Googling "thief game" or something similar should lead to plenty of screenshots and art (or, here's a crazy idea: you could get the games and play them, since the first two are brilliant and the third is quite good - requires a Win2000 era PC to run the first two, and something that can run UT2k4 for the third).

Google it, there are sites detailing the whole game: quests, items, monsters, etcetera.. I did a campaign in Arcanum, made most of the conversions myself. It probally wasn't entirely balanced. But the players didn't care, were having a great time, and so was I! :)
