Well thanks to the good grace of my gamer group, I got drafted into being the dm. So I have to come up with a campaign (that can last a few sessions) by this Friday. So I was hopping for a some comments on what I have come up with, and a few ideas on how to improve. But since my group has a.d.d. on a campaign that doesn't keep there interest, it might just get pushed a side. So im asking, no begging for a hand.
For starters I was gonna go with ancient Egypt theme. So im thinking of restricting some classes, and character back story possibilities, maybe weapons as well. I have sand storm and like that book so this also gives me a chance to use it. Im thinking of limiting it to three cores & sand storm only.
Next I was thinking of doing certain races have been fit certain classes and roles in society.
-Humans im thinking of being mostly slaves or solders so they end up becoming gladiators (Fighters), monks, and two weapon fighting rangers. -Elves being the higher ups in society officials, bankers, lawyers; thus making them more common as wizards, bards, and im not sure of a third.
-Gnomes being well treated middle class citizens. There jobs being merchants & medics and such. Their favored class im thinking being bard, cleric, and lost on the idea for a third class.
-Halflings I was thinking of making them advisers, assassins, and merchants. (Some times all three :evillaugh)
-Half elves were gonna go more outcast then anything else. So wanderers, lower class citizens and low ranking solders. So class wise I was thinking bard, fighter, barbarian, and ranger.
-dwarfs were solders and smiths. So fighters basically.
-half orcs are the same as half elves minus the bard class part.
So that covers the class thing, I think ill do campaign ideas in my next post. Can some one help me a few of the terrain difficulties please. And please give me some feed back on my class ideas.

Ok so heres part two, what I have government wise. I was thinking of making major cities like city states of Greece. Having one large on ruling over several smaller areas. For gov I was gonna go with varies per city state. Some being tribunal, oligarchy, councils, majority vote, and dictatorships. As for the rules most are high elves and halflings. That kinda takes care of this stuff, of course there is the corruption and scandals that can rock on city state and waring factions, along with the alliance system. But this stuff I will go into if it ends up being more then just a one shot. next post is environment fallowed by plot.

Ok so now im on geography. Im planing on a large continents that due to a majority magical damage, with a wee bit of over farming led it to become near completely desert. Theres a archipelago surrounding the continent being the only really green areas near it. So its either sand, savanna, mountains, or near rivers. So Now the place is dotted with kingdoms in it, mining is also a very important thing, since the continent isnt self sufficient. But a fun thing I like to do is make one or two kingdoms of undead being the majority with mindless zombies and skeletons being the perfect work force. But I digress back to my main thing. I cant decide how to divide up territories unless I make it up on the spot. Well dwarfs of course being mountain goers, but as for every one else I got nothing. Some good replies would be welcome. Maybe have the more powerful cities either have control over the main mines or river ways.

My advice is use a lot of your ideas but focus on a region that is relatively small--maybe a hundred miles or so of territory. Your players' response may help you flesh out things later. Come up with a main city for them to ultimately buy stuff, hire people etc in. The region of undead thing is good--you could twist the idea of the Egyptian necropolis into an actual area where things are spooky and, well, dead.

I am curious, how is this an Egyptian theme? You have lawyers and bankers, which are Roman concepts. You have a vast, un-fertile desert (Egypt was the breadbasket of the Ancient world). Where is the Egytpian influence? This isn't to say that your setting is bad, I am just not seeing your stated influence and thus can't really offer advise without knowing to what extent you desire such an influence.

How about the alternative: "the empire fell". PCs travel into the legendary empire (dispatched by their king to find why the empire nolonger sends trade ships. Travel by river boat to find ruined and abandoned cities occupied nubian archers, temples plundered of gold, river communities descimated by plague, the ruling classes gone, the priesthood all committed suicide in some crisis of faith...The Whole empire up for grabs just as its enemies invade for territory.

That way you can have any class and nationality looking for their piece of the plunder.

yellowdingo's idea is actually really cool. You can still use elements of what you planned but there, ta da, you have a main campaign concept!

Sounds a little like Dark Sun. If you don't mind a little of that influence, they have several free pdf's you can look at over at www.athas.org

Adventures, a city state, monsters, slaves, all that good stuff. It might take you awhile to comb through it, though.

Thanks tankschmidt that sight looks like it will work out pretty good for me. I think a friend of mine has a dark sun book. Not sure if there are more then one, I only saw a brief glimpse of it.
Ok plot time. The start will depend on the character back round, and Ill ask through e mail since I don't seem all of them during the day. But for over all I was going to go with very powerful consultant to the king telling the king to start up a series of conquests. So what I'm going to give the players of choice of helping the king or fighting against him. The king being manipulated by the adviser, who is a mummy sorcerer. The sorcerer is out to reclaim the desert lands from the creatures that defile it with there presence. So he has powerful clerics that are extremely loyal to him turn those slain in battle into undead minions to continue the fight. Those that escape a undead and living soldier rampage will start a resistance. I'm thinking of making one of the npcs that help out the pcs will be one of the adviser's loyalists and dupe the pcs into doing a few crimes, recover a artifact here and there for him; with out the pcs knowing the true intentions. The rebel jobs will be the same as the adviser missions only a little less well funded or shakier info. I think that covers the main points. I will add more in another post.

I didnt notice the posts by yellow dingo, thought and go rice 12. Well to thought I was gonna go with culturally, and you know how most gamers I know think when you say egypt. Bing pops up desert. So sorry but video games and the movie "The Mummy," and stuff you hear about in history class about nations in the old ages have been what really built up my base ideas. As for banking and such its dnd there needs to be that, or else the pc's are gonna carry around a few wagons full of coins after the first few dungeons. So I guess Ill change the title to desert instead of egypt. And that empire thing sounds great for the small islands surrounding the main continent.
