| jjake12-26-07, 04:00 AM | I was trying to think of a good campaign setting since I usually suck at that kind of thing. The thought of creating my own world is completely inspiring but when it comes down to actually doing it it never works out. I am posting this on here because I want anyone and everyone to give me as much ideas and, well anything they can so that I can finally get the ball rolling on creating a quality campaign setting. So here's the loose theme for my campaign setting: I want to create a CS that is based off the real world. The geography will be close to the earths in terms of shapes of continents but I will make them a little different just for a little seperation between my world and the real world. I want to keep the goverment aspects the same though. I will use a map of the real world and judt rename the cities and states to fit. Does anyone think that souonds like a good idea or have anything to add? |

Do you want to have a historical acurate, no-magic, real-world mediveal setting? Do you want a setting based on european mythology and folklore? Do you want a setting based "in a time long forgotten, long before written history"? I think that's much more important to make a setting an interesting place. |

Looking back at place-names and the annals of history you will find such a subject is brimming with things that would seem mundane, even common at time of creation/acceptance. Always keep realism and rationale in mind, and as a side note I most always include grittyness and at times 'dismal' undertones. |

I also want to keep the government structure for each counrty. What I mean is the type of government. I want a moderatly magic world, its going to be accesible to everyone but not in everything one sees. I do plan on having some small parts of the world be magic rich, just cause I think every CS should have some magic, runic areas, it adds a little diversity. I think the world should be more before history was written, but I still want there to be a sense of literacy and education about it. Sort of like a medievil times too. Anybody as kany questions that you wouls think of for you campaign setting. This is my first real attempt at making my own. |
| Kineon_War12-28-07, 08:37 AM | I have been running two campaigns based in real world geography for the last 4 years. The reasons why I chose this was because: 1. Real life is more bizarre than imagination 2. It reduced the time in mapping so I could spend more in making interesting encounters. 3. It was educational. 4. When newbie players joined and I was trying to help them make characters, I could just ask them what cultures they liked and work from there. 5. I hate the D & D gods and use real world mythology and pantheons as much as possible. However, except for the geograpgy, all the magic etc still existed (even psionics). |

Imagine if dragons were at hastings? If the Spartans at Thermopylae had alchemist's fire? Is it something like that? Or is history not modeled, just general location and setting? |
