Whoa. I've pictured magic along those two lines for a D&D setting for a while. What are the odds of that?

Anyways, I do have one or two questions:
1) music and math are very closely related. How would you differentiate them?

2) So, would each sorcerer have an instrument that was his or her means of casting spells?

Also, both these branches of study cover a wide variety of disciplines (which is probably a good thing in this case). Factoring in algebra is very different from proving triangles congruent in coordinate geometry. And I saw that you said that mathematical magic would be easier to make new spells than musical magic, is there any particular reason for this?

I've got a question.

Divine magic. I mean, since you have all these crazy (and awesome) things for sorcery and wizardry, what do clerics do?

Or warmages? What do they get? they seem to be a bit of both.

for clerics you could have them quote scripture and each verse is a different spell or effect.

Here's a good group of numbers for ya': imaginary numbers! (yes, in all seriousness). I'm not sure what exactly they're for, but, if you take the square root of a negative number, the number is one that does not exist in the real number system. Try it on a calculator: it'll probably display "ERROR: NONREAL ANSWER". I would assign these numbers to work for extra planer magic, like summonings, gates, etc. given the fact that they don't exist in this plane, so to speak.

Also, there are (my favorite thus far) proofs. By this, I mean, "Prove angle A is congruent to angle B". No numbers are required, this is more reasoning skills based on the rules that apply to what ever figures you need to prove. I could see this as a transmutation, with wizards proving that a person is in some way analogous to a bunny for a baleful polymorph spell, for example.

Now, just one more question on the theory behind this: math evolved from philosophers trying to explain relations between numbers, how did the math to magic thing evolve in your campaign world?

There's the number i.

It was created through a proof that proved that 1=2.
I cant remember the proof, ut they called the one that equals the two i.

Follow?

I've seen that proof, Anuvrix. I remember I heard about it from a friend, and went to one of the math teachers and asked him about it. He just looked at me and said "It violates a law of mathematics. It actually doesn't work." I was rather disappointed...

Anyways, they're a bunch of those (number)=(another number) if you just go on wikipedia and search 1=2. They'd make neat transmutations, methinks.

the number i is the representation of imaginary numbers, I think.

Also, for music: One idea that could be neat would be that powerful sorcerers gather a group of other sorcerers and serves as the conductor of powerful spells.
