"Classic" Monsters as playable races. [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-31-07, 03:05 PM My current campaign will be ending in about 6 months. Our group has not decided if we will be moving on to 4th edition or sticking with 3.5.

So, I am beginning to undertake creation of a game in which the players will play one of the 'classic' (i.e. 1st edition) monsters as a race. The basic story so far is that the characters are outcasts, who've banded together because of being outcasts.

Here's a short list of races I've been able to come up with.

Bugbear
Gnoll
Goblin
Hobgoblin
Kobold
Lizard Man/Woman
Orc
Troglodyte

Sadly, in 3.5, Bugbears & Trogs are a total ECL of a +4, and Gnolls & Lizardpeople are +3. I would like to keep the ECL around 1 or 2 at most, but in this list, that only leaves Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kobold & Orc.

I have a large group, 8 players, and I'd like everyone to play something different. Does anyone think I missed anything? Keep in mind, that I do not want any 'Large' creature types or anything that isn't humanoid (as opposed to say Fey, Monstrous Humanoid, or Giant).

Something I was considering is that since they are outcasts, the characters do not get thier 'humanoid' hit dice, and only advance as thier class. This brings the other races more in line, since the highest LA is +2 from the Trogs.

Does this seems fair? Or should there be some other way to do this? I want to keep the levels fairly close together, and I figure a Max LA of +2 should do that.

12-31-07, 03:39 PM drop the HD, saves, BAB, feats, and skills. Keep everything else. The you are only going off of LA.

12-31-07, 05:19 PM I have ECL 0 versions of goblins, hobbos, kobolds, and orcs that are PC friendly, if you want.

12-31-07, 09:34 PM Savage species had a way of playing monsters as classes,you could even play a 1st levl minotaur? Consider using the Awaken spell on animals? Savage species also had Ecl 1 versions of anthropomorphic rats,bats,cats Etc.?
