| ferretferret01-14-07, 07:25 PM | alright, the time has come for this. my spelling sucks please bear with me. i am a jr. in highschool, and i have started on my senior project. witch is to publish a D20 openlicesing system game, now im to explain it to the people at the wizards borads to get your feedback. if your a powergamer please go away, thats not why im making my campign. lets begin with the basics. the world is know as .... well to be honest i call the world the earth, or the earth of bluestone. somtimes i even refer to it as the great bluestone( those will be explained later.) it is a highly magical world set in the mid evil europe, with some renesance. no asian influance. every thing about the world is HIGHLY fantasy fairytale. i want to returne things to thee origonal fantasy sense. with truly fantasic cratures and heros. my world has the following features with that in mind. : the gods are active in the world. and people don't worship ideals. the pantheon is worsiped as a whole, usualy with a person picking a patron deity for what they represent. the panteopn is base of of cristian mythos. : good and evil are black and white. : starotypes are a good thing. im sick of people around me saying " i dont want to put a prinesses in a dragon garded tower because its been done to much befor." no. it hasent. and even if it has its still usualy a fun adventure. i subscribe to the approce of 'if it ani't broke, don't fix it'. i really want to set up a light harted, fun, bright type of world. im not saying that the stuff in eberon and heros of horor arn't a good thing, but i just want a good, pretty world. also i want there to be heros. fighters in bright armor wilding sword and shild agenst mighty dragons, while wizards and sorcerers dule, with great magics flying in the air, and the rough sneeks up behind a goblin warlord to deliver the final blow with her mighty sneak atack. some changes im making are things like. hobgonlins( witch is old englesh for fairy-goblin) are smaller more magical versions of the goblin. if a fey begins to turn evil, they become goblins, elves are now fey. orcs are now goblinoids. a new race has been added. hobelves elf favord class is now ranger. gomes is wizard. hobelf is bard. a new system of feats has been added. mettle and magic feats. desinged to make your character more of a hardened lord of his phsyical power, or makes them more of a clever spellslinger. if it helps you to get a better feel of what im talking about books, video games, and movies that inspire me greatly are: the hobbit (thats a big one) earthsea the lord of the rings world of warcraft fable oblivian robin hood the princess bride through the woods shrek/2 narnia harry potter eragon/eldest also if you've eber been to a ren. fair, there generaly a good exaple for what im going for here now this may not go over well with some people. but besides hevan and hell and the world of dreams, there are no plains. this means that all plain related spells are no more, however, with the exeptions of the ones that actulay place you in another plain, all of the seplls(like blink) can be rewriten so that they may still be used. this also just means that incorpial creaters are not on anther plain, there just incorpeal. gost touch wepons dont exist on 2 plains they exist on obe but can make contact with incorpial creature. also, any creature that exists on another plain also can still be worked into the world. for example, though there is no plain of water there are still places in there world where the elements are at there strongest, almoest to the extent of being pure concentrated element. these places are like the very bottem of the sea. now about the bluestones. along time ago te world was full conented magic, and people could do anything. but his lead to corruption. so the archmage murlin of the ironstaff sacraficed his life to close the gate from witch magic entered our world. but he coulnt close it all. and from the crakes of the gate magic comes into our world. the bluestones are an exaple of these. theye are like veins of the world. they are solid incarnations of magic, an there very rare. alot of my worlds history has to do with these. thats all for now. please coment on what i wrote and send ideas if you have any. |

Now just how active are we talking about here? 'Pray for 50 straight days to tide over a drought'? '"Hey, God!", "Hey, Jimmy! Here's some sheep for you!", "Thanks, God!"'? 'Zeus mating with every female in sight, humanoid or otherwise'? Might make a spot of a difference. i really want to set up a light harted, fun, bright type of world. im not saying that the stuff in eberon and heros of horor arn't a good thing, but i just want a good, pretty world. also i want there to be heros. fighters in bright armor wilding sword and shild agenst mighty dragons, while wizards and sorcerers dule, with great magics flying in the air, and the rough sneeks up behind a goblin warlord to deliver the final blow with her mighty sneak atack. if it helps you to get a better feel of what im talking about books, video games, and movies that inspire me greatly are: the hobbit (thats a big one) earthsea the lord of the rings world of warcraft fable oblivian robin hood the princess bride through the woods shrek/2 narnia harry potter eragon/eldest also if you've eber been to a ren. fair, there generaly a good exaple for what im going for here Well, this probably isn't what you're looking for, but various scenes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail keep popping into my head, particularly that of the Rabbit of Caerbannog, those dang Frenchmen, and Launcelot going berserk on that wedding party. Though I'd imagine most groups would tire of more than a session's worth of this, 'twould be quite interesting to play this out over a campaign with a determined group. if a fey begins to turn evil, they become goblins elves are now fey. orcs are now goblinoids. As in "change stats mid-game"? Could cause problems if... Well, honestly, no "if": Will cause problems. Are PCs banned from being fey (elves)? If not, again, problems galore. a new race has been added. hobelves Well, what in Dis' unholy handbag is a hobelf? Half hobbit, half elf? My, that just sounds... unwholesome. Thoughts of beings approaching kender-like levels of annoyance are popping to mind... now about the bluestones. along time ago te world was full conented magic, and people could do anything. but his lead to corruption. so the archmage murlin of the ironstaff sacraficed his life to close the gate from witch magic entered our world. but he coulnt close it all. and from the crakes of the gate magic comes into our world. the bluestones are an exaple of these. theye are like veins of the world. they are solid incarnations of magic, an there very rare. alot of my worlds history has to do with these. I'm sure this isn't the extent of your world's history, but, as is, it seems a bit... weak. "people could do anything"? As in "everyone has magic and can wish at will"? Or even "everyone has prestidigitation as a spell-like ability usable once a week with a risk of causing cerebral edema in self and babies within a three-mile radius"? I- Hm... That's actually not a bad idea of a "corruption" effect, if I may. But I digress... Ol' "Murlin the Messiah" there going off to lay down his life at the magical gateway to... nowhere, I assume, since there are no planes of existence other than heaven and hell, all seems pretty arbitrary. Besides, this calls to mind a "Dark Portal to Draenor" image of sorts. The "bluestones" aren't too bad of an idea, honestly, but for one minor problem: Eberron already has them. They're called "dragonshards". Granted, yours likely have different effects and backstories and would be more than effective as part of a locally-oriented homebrew, but published 'twill generate a number of complaints about "rip-offs". ...Sorry if I got a bit derisive near the end. Not a big fan of anyone using "Merlin" or any of its cousins as a character or NPC anywhere, anytime. |
| taradusis01-14-07, 10:21 PM | You seem to have done a good job of paring down the thousands of options you were faced with. Some suggested tasks if I may?1-See if you can't come up with a 20 word or less blurb to describe your setting.2 Draw a map of your campaign setting.3-Use at least 20+ words to describe each player character race and 100+ words to describe each unique player character race.4 Give a thorough description of the "home base"(starting town or city) of the pcs.5 Create unique races, magic items, geographic areas and adventures.6 Include a good first adventure that demonstrates game mechanics and introduces Npcs and world to new players.RANDOM THOUGHTS |
| tharivol26601-14-07, 10:32 PM | alright, the time has come for this. my spelling sucks please bear with me. I'll Help for I am Tharivol266 and i kan cinda spell (that was a joke) I'll correct grammar too. I am a junior in highscool and i have started on my senior project, which is to publish a D20 Open Liscence system game. Now I am going to explain it to the people at the Wizards boards to get your feedback. If you're a powergamer please go away, that's not why I'm making my campaign. Let's begin with the basics. The world is known as...well to be honest I call the world "The Earth", "The Earth of Bluestone" or sometimes "The Great Bluestone", these names will be explained later. It is a highly magical world set in Medieval Europe era with some Renisance influence and no asian influences. Everything about the world is HIGHLY fantasy/fairytale style. I want to return things to the original fantasy sense with truly fantastic creatures and heroes. With that in mind my campaign has the following: The gods are active in the world and people don't worship ideals. The people worship the pantheon usually by picking the diety that you most resemble. The pantheon is based on the Christian Myths. Good and evil are black and white. Stereotypes are a good thing. I'm sick of people around me saying "I don't want to put a princess in a tower guarded by a dragon because it has been done too much before" no, it hasn't and even if it has it's still usually a fun adventure. I subscribe to the approach of "If it ain't broke don't fix it". I really want to set up a light hearted, fun, bright type of world. I'm not saying that the stuff in Eberron and Heroes of Horror aren't a good thing but i just want a good pretty world. Also i want there to be heroes, fighters in bright armor weilding sword and shield against mighty dragons, while wizards and sorcerers duel with great magic flying in the air, and the rough sneaks up behind a goblin warlord to deliver the final blow with her mighty sneak attack. some changes i am making are things like: Hobgoblins (which is olde english for faery-goblin [hey if you are going to commit might as well go the whole way]) are smaller and more magical versions of the goblin if a fey begins to turn evil the become goblins elves are now fey, orcs are now goblinoids there is a new race called Hob-elves Elf favored class is ranger, gnomes favor wizard, and Hob-elves favor the bard a new system of feats has beed added: mettle and magic feats, which are designed to make your character more of a hardened lord of his physical power, or to make them a more clever spell slinger If it helps you to get a better feel of what I'm talking these are some materials that have inspired me: The Hobbit Earthsea The Lord of the Rings World of Warcraft Fable Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Robin Hood The Princess Bride Though the Woods Shrek 1 & 2 The Chronicals of Narnia Harry Potter Eragon And Renisance fairs Now this may not fo over well with some people, but besides Heaven and Hell and the world of dreams there are no planes. This means that all of the Planar spells don't exist with the execption of Planar Travel spells. Any spell that is debatable (such as Blink) can be re-worked to fit. This means that incorporeal creatures are not on another plane they're just incorporeal. Ghost touch weapons only function on the material plane and still function like normal there. Typical interplanar creatures can still exist with a little reworking. For instance while there is no plane of water in a location like the bottom of the ocean it can be predominatly water element and the creatures normally from the water plane can exist there. As for the Bluestone. Long ago the land was covered in magic and the people could do anything. This inevitably led to corruption so the great archmage Merlin of the Ironstaff set out to do something about it. He stemmed the flow of magic to the world off reducing it to a mere trickle, but unfortunatly this action claimed his life. The Bluestones are a solid form of the magic that once permiated the world and are like the blood of the earth. These stones are rare and their appearence causes historical events. That is all for now. Please comments on what i wrote and send ideas if you have any. |
| tharivol26601-14-07, 10:39 PM | if i were you i would change the color of the stones to avoid immature jokes. i would rule out interplanar travel completly where if you die you go to the correct destination and you only go to the dream realm while you are dreaming. i would get rid of the new feat idea because i dont think those will work out too well. i am assuming the elves are big and turn into orcs if they go bad tolkien style rather than the tradition fairy tale pint sized elves. for light humor i would suggest that you read the xanth series by piers anthony. deff start with "spell for chameleon" if you havent read in the series yet because that will explain the world far better than the others. |

Not a big fan of anyone using "Merlin" or any of its cousins as a character or NPC anywhere, anytime. sorry i hanvent been on in a little, so ill do this one at a time. yes my school dose rule, you can check it out at http://www.scasd.org/deltaprogram/site/default.asp abote the gods. they are like a less active versoin of the greek pantheon. zuese dosnt get friendly with every woman in the world, but he is responsibe for lightning. if you upset zues, or are truly favered among his worshipers, he might do somthing. he dost work at evry thing though, thats why he has his clericks. yes the holy grail is a good example i did forget to mention this but the transformation takes 6 months to a year based on your actions, and its all qt the DM's discretion. if an elf lies, or steals, hes not an orc. if he murders, hes a little closer. if he then saves an orphange from a fire he's less. and the trans formation is all based on the 7 deadly sins: sloth, envy, you turn into a hobgoblin vanity, greed, lust: you turn into a goblin glutany, wrath: you turn to an orc, or if your of a strong built, a bugbear the hob elf is not a halfling elf/ hobbit elf. it is an olde neglish fairy tail elf. kinda like a bigger less slavey version of the brownies. yes, your right about the can do anything.. picture it like earthsea but your energy dosnt run out. that did lead to mass coruption, witch is why merlin, one of the only good wizards, changed this, but it cost his life. picture the gate like an an aprocable plain in a way. its all a mystery. i like magic being a mysterie. also. i dint know about the dragonshards when i started in june, but when i found out about it i looked into them and i relized they they were nowhere near the same thing in game terms. more will be up on theam wjen i figure out micanics more for theam. and i love the idea of a wizard named merlin |

| ferretferret01-14-07, 11:33 PM | first of all, thank you. that really helped me out. if i were you i would change the color of the stones to avoid immature jokes. i would rule out interplanar travel completly where if you die you go to the correct destination and you only go to the dream realm while you are dreaming. i would get rid of the new feat idea because i dont think those will work out too well. i am assuming the elves are big and turn into orcs if they go bad tolkien style rather than the tradition fairy tale pint sized elves. for light humor i would suggest that you read the xanth series by piers anthony. deff start with "spell for chameleon" if you havent read in the series yet because that will explain the world far better than the others. okay. i can see the jokes, but i love the blue...dimonds. the resaon there called that is because " the shards of stone infront of you shine magniicently with every shade of you know to the races of man" and come on, those jokes apper in every type of campaign, thats why i hate ten year olds interplaniar traval is ruled out intirly, but i still want the blink spell to work out and such. and yes, your right about the final destantion and olny entering the world of dreams in your sleep. the pint sized ones are the hobelves ( not hob means fairy, not hobbit) and i will have to chek out that series, thanks |
| ferretferret01-14-07, 11:37 PM | also... ican;t break up a quote...sorry |
| OmnipotentSeal01-14-07, 11:48 PM | Just skimming this, you should probably check out Edmund Spencer's The Fearie Queen. If you want a world with moral absolutes and allegorical monsters, Spencer excels at both. |
| Rewind01-14-07, 11:54 PM | Well, i'd suggest you clearly define what you aim to do. Do you want to create a new setting that follows the rules of D&D? or a setting belonging to an entirely unique game system? Either way, you also have to see what has been done before, especially if you want to publish your material. Some of WotC's material is exclusively theirs. You want to check out the Open Gaming License. Then, you should also read some of the settings on these boards and elsewhere on the net. There are some really good ones out there, even some similar to what you want. I actually do want to see how you mesh the typical fantasy features - wizards, magic, dragons - with a christian-based system of gods. I also like the idea of a mutating elf and the flavor behind it. |

| Leaves01-15-07, 12:52 AM | Are there different kinds of elves based on the heavenly virtues? Just thinking. Much thanks to tharivol266for the spelling re-write! Cookies for you! :cookie: :cookie: You know, you say you want the world to be light-hearted, but everything you have described lends to serious campaigns. I guess what I don't understand is, light-hearted how? I normally like a more serious world, but if you are thinking of making a Christian-based campaign setting that is humorous and fun, that could be an interesting read. |
| jonny_Jeslek01-15-07, 04:31 AM | For light humor and a pretty neat return to fairy-tale feelings, watch The Tenth Kingdom which was a miniseries a few years ago, but is on DVD everywhere. For stone magic whatever, see Anne Bishop's Dark Jewels Trilogy, though that may be a bit too dark. But if you can combine the lightheartedness of traditional fairytales with the dark edge of Anne Bishop...you've just created the most interesting campaign world ever...maybe. JJV |

| ferretferret01-15-07, 03:40 PM | alright.i feel i've gottenenough attention to post how the races and classes act in my world, brace yourselves, here the come. man: the race of men have populated the magoraty of the earth for thousands of years. they are a wise and resorceful people, and capalble warriors too. duringthe years of old, when magic was abulntendt, they were quick to learns the ways of the mage, but were also the first to be corupted from it. men count all races as there friends, but also as there enimies. there lives are short, and there thoughs always changing, the man you knew five years ago is not the man you know today. men are the most adaptable of the races. dwarves: the dwarvs inhabit the caves and mountians of the world. they are strong and capable warriors and a great advasarie in the past wars. the dwarves care little for what others think of them. the dwarves are friends with humans and gnome, but they care little for the ways of the elves. dwarves can be a bit rash at times, and silent at others, but they just perfer to keep to theam selves. they are none to keen in the ways of magic. dwarves care not for the grander things in life, like paiting, fancy balls, and the delicasis that the rich know. they perfer the simple thing in life. good friends, good music, good adventures, and good food. if a bare bread is an insalt to a dwarf, an unseasoned meat is like a slap in the face. gnomes: the gnomes are a strange bunch indeed. the dwarves look at theam like brothers, halflings like cosiuns, elves like a child, hobelves like a twin, and humans as a dear friend. they are very keen in the ways of magic and fine arts, but dispite this thay never seem to be at ends with the dwarves. the gnomes have silly tendances at times, but get very serious when the time calls. the gnomes love a good joke, even if the the one it was pulled on. they are little for war, witch explins there absance in most wars that shaped the earths history. changes: favord class is now wizard elves: elves are at home in almost any wilderness, but they perfer the forests and woods of the world. the elves are one with the magics of the world, and of all its inhabitances. elves are keen with a bow and a sword, and have a strange grace when using one. they are not that fond of the dwarves, and down right hate the goblins of the world. like all fey, they are at constante war with goblinoids. at the end of the day though, they perfer nothing more than a song and glass of wine. the elves reliy greatly on the magical powers of the world they live in, and have sworn off all steam based powers that the dwarves use. changes: elves are now fey, and subect to goblin metemoropheses. favored class is now ranger (mabey druid) Hobelves: standing only three to four feet tall, the hobelves are one of the most peculear races of the world. they have a life span similear to the elves, but almost never seem to grow old. they are children at hart and take every thing with a joke and a smile. there traditons and actions can olnly be described as queer by those who see them. they like all races, but dont always get the same kindness. hobevlves love to explore, learning stories of all the places they go is one of the graest joys of them. the hobeleves have a tendancey to wear pointy hats and colorful cloths. but be careful of upsetting one, for they can bestow powerful curses on you. racial triats: +2 charisma -2 constatution. hob elves are generaly fun to be around, but they are frail like elves. + 2 bounuse to spot listen and search. hobelves are abservent by nature. they do not have the elven ability to sence secret doors however. +1 to any cheack made in there home enviorment. the secrests of a hobelves home enviorment comes second nauture to them. bestow curse: one per week. favord class: bard wow, tht was alot more writing than i had expected to do, so im gonna take of the rest of the day and put up the last few races and clsses tomarow. sorry |
| tharivol26601-15-07, 06:56 PM | alright. I feel I have gotten enough attention to post how the races and calses act in my world. Human: The race of men have populated the majority of the earth for thousands of years. They are a wise and resourceful people who are also capable warriors. During the years of old when magic was abundent they were the quickest to learn the ways of magic, but they were also the first to be corrupt by it. Men count all races as their friends but can also count them all as enemies. Their lives are short adn their thoughts are always changing. The man you knew five years agao is not the man you know now. Humans are the most adaptable of all the races. Dwarves: the dwarves inhabit the caves and mountains of the world. They are very strong and able warriors and as such they were a great influence of past wars. The dwarves care little for the opinions of others. They frequently befriend Humans and Gnomes but show great disdaine for Elves. While dwarves can be loud they are just as apt to be silent and prefer their own company. Dwarves are not fans of magic nor do they have a taste for luxuries. They value simple things like good friends, good music, good adventures and good food. Bare bread is treated as an insult and unseasoned meat is treated as an assault. Gnomes: gnomes are a strange race. Dwarves see them as brothers, halflings treat them as cousins, to elves they are children and they are twins to hobelves, and humans treat them as good friends. Gnomes are good hearted and like jokes, even if they are the target, and they have a great aptitude for magic and the arts. As a peaceful group they haven't had much influence in the wars that shaped the earth's history. Elves: elves are at home in all wild areas but prefer the forests of the world. Elves are very skilled with magic and act as one with it. Elves are very skilled in combat, particularly with the bow and sword. Being so intune with magic elves dont use the steam powered items like the dwarves do which sometimes leads to stressful realations. As such elves and dwarves have bad relations. Elves, like all other fey, hate goblinoids and are constantly at war with them. Hobelvesstanding only three to four feet tall the hobelves are one of the strangest races in the world. They have a long life span like the elves but never seem to grow old. They are children at heart and take everything with a smile. Their traditions and actions can only be described as queer to those who see them. They like all races but dont always get the kindness in turn. Stories are one of the greatest joys to a hobelf and they explore to find more to tell. Hobelves wear colorful clothing and pointy hats but you should not think little of them because when they are mad they can bestow powerful curses. peer edited |
| taradusis01-15-07, 11:33 PM | The hob-elves seem very similar to a race of gnomes that already exists ?Are you allowing undead in your campaign? How about underwater races? How does a christian pantheon exist, isn't christianity a montheism? Are there racial gods?Is there a seelie and unseelie court?Do devils and demons exist in this world? Are there inter-racial babies like 1/2 orcs or 1/2 elves? Are there unique characters like the scarecrow, cowardly lion, tinman etc? |
| Artifact01-16-07, 03:05 AM | Stereotypes are a good thing. I'm sick of people around me saying "I don't want to put a princess in a tower guarded by a dragon because it has been done too much before" no, it hasn't and even if it has it's still usually a fun adventure. I subscribe to the approach of "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Thanks for the translation service, Tharivol266; I like Ferretferret's setting, but I was afraid I'd miss alot without help. For clarity's sake, I'll quote from your post. I totally agree with the above statement 110%. I believe fantasy archtypes endure for a reason. Don't let anyone tell you traditional fantasy is boring ;). I look forward to seeing more of your setting, keep up the good work! |

It's possible that he might be allowing some of the saints to give spells, and act as demigods. But I don't know for sure. To the creator of this setting, be sure to include how non-divine magic 'corrupts'. Is it given to men by servants of the devil(s)? Is it passed down to men at a high price by the fey? Was the world from which the bluestones originated harmful in some way to humans? As well, the descriptions of the dwarves, humans and gnomes you've given are pretty much the same as in many traditional fantasy RPGs and books. Of course, that isn't necessarily a bad thing; some, nay, many players like the things they are used to. |

| taradusis01-16-07, 10:27 PM | Seelie court is loosely the good fey and fairies, shakespeares oberon and titaina?Unseelie court is the evil fey,the changelings and such. All fey in myth tend to interact poorly with humans, the good fey can't help being beyond mortal ken and the evil fey are innately viscious and beyond the pale.In a campaign based around or that includes fey all fey should owe allegiance to one court or the other.Does your world have fairy rings like those in dmg II?Will Pcs be allowed to play clerics, paladins, favored souls? |

( please note that when i say powergaming i mean combining different feats and items in ways never ment to be put to geather in the frist place to acive charaters beyond mortal comprienshion. the people who would be better of playing some video game RPG than D&D. if you make your character strong, yet reasonble, im not talking to you.) |
| tharivol26601-18-07, 05:51 PM | ideally there would be no powergaming except just for excercising your brain. realistically there is nothing you can do to stop it that doesnt make it dnd anymore. no matter how hard you try to keep people from powergaming it they will just see it as a bigger challenge if you manage to limit it at all and then they would try to beat you. it is really a viscious cycle. the only thing you can do is to moniter your players or make a new system. |

| taradusis01-29-07, 11:59 PM | Perhaps the blue diamonds could be like IOUN STONES with their shapes helping to determine their powers? Is there a powerful order of druids in your world or something like stonehenge. In D+D standong stones(megalithes)can be used to cast spells if the proper sacrifice is made?RANDOM THOUGHTS |

| taradusis02-03-07, 10:29 PM | Standing stones,I misspelled it,also known as megaliths.Stonehenge is a real world megalith.I've forgotten which book they're in,I want to say masters of the wild?They were,in celtic religion,dedicated to the god BEL. |
| ryuspearhead02-07-07, 07:45 PM | make black good and white evil because other wise it seams racist :( ( also im white )) |
| ferretferret02-09-07, 08:03 PM | by good and evil are black and white i was saying that good and evil are distinct as the colors white and black. there are no gray areas where they blure. also, whould anyone buy a world based corse book that dosnt have a new base class? |
| taradusis02-09-07, 08:48 PM | You mean a campaign setting like greyhawk or waterdeep?I would care more about maps and something unique to that campaign world.Doesn't your world have some kind of crystalmancers who work in Blue Diamonds? |
| taradusis03-20-07, 05:26 PM | Perhaps you could devise a PC class based on the awaken spell? This would give you PCs like donkey from shrek? |
