Building off the success of the "Build a D&D City" idea, I'm going to see how much community support I can get for building up a campaign world.

I've created some boards at :
http://johnflytn.proboards98.com/index.cgi

You can see the "World Building" sections at the bottom. The other boards are used for my weekly D&D campaign.

The world is the one I've been running for about a year, but if others want to start from scratch I'm open to that as well.

its pretty empty, so I'm hoping lots of you will stop in and start helping out.

The only real information I've posted is how I introduced Psionics into my game world. (If you read the Stephen King book "Cell" you might see some borrowed ideas)

The way I'm hoping this can go is similar to the current "Build a D&D city" thread. This means someone would post a "Proposal" and once its been voted in that part becomes canon world history.

I would love to see us create a unique campaign that we could eventually create a web site for and perhaps have groups using in their games.

Hopefully we can get at least 5-10 people active so we can start tossing around ideas and get some basics voted on.

Once we see how many people want to be active we can start to make some guidelines on the voting process.

Personally I would like to have a proposal be backed by at least 3-4 "YES" votes before being added as canon, along with some sort of appeal process so people can make a last ditch effort to bring something up for reconsideration OR perhaps try and get something removed.

Many places (such as Wikipedia) find operating by consensus to be a reasonable and effective means of generating content; I'd advise getting a good deal of feedback before even putting something up to vote.

If someone has an idea about moving this type of effort somewhere else I'd be open to it. Right now I'm just using my proboards forum

Eventually I'd like to design a website showing off the world.

I use http://www.eruvian.com for my setting. It's still in development, but it has forums (and it's free), so it's worth taking a look at.

Wikis might be what you're loooking for; try pbwiki, wetpaint, or any other you like better. (Example: http://buildadndworld.pbwiki.com, or http://buildadndworld.wetpaint.com) I don't think those have limits on membership. However, you would have to build the format from the ground up. Another free forums site is s10.invisionfree.com, but I don't know if there is a limit on memberships there.

I'll see how much discussion is started on my existing proboards forums.

If we get a lot of people I'll put up a web site.

I have some decent hosting options from my ISP and wouldn't mind just making an entire site, but don't want to put too much effort in prematurely.

How many members are you allowed/do you have?

I'm double checking, someone just anonymously emailed me warning of a member cap, I'm not sure if they are correct so I've passed a question to proboards.

UPDATE: Ok, the anonymous emailer was incorrect... No member caps or bandwidth caps..

Okay, that's good, it means you can keep your current forums until you want more, different or more publicized resources.

Do you want to cross-post in other forums (Giant in the Playground, Myth-Weavers, etc) or keep it a purely Gleemax undertaking?

Since I've got a confirmed "No cap", feel free to recruit.

Recruiting freely. ;)

I'd be interested. My aim handle is in my profile, keep in touch with me like that to let me know what's going on or send me private messages on the site here.

So, are we gonna create a world or what?

Here's an interesting idea of mine.

though passageways to elemental and aligment-aligned planes are very common, and therefore the best known by the involucrated, these are not the only planes there are.
Though not of common knowledge, there are many versions of this material plane. Each one of them started at their own time and has a different story, and no material plane is the excact same. Little things are constant in the material plane sea, one of them are dragons, and how much the people of the dying world of ebberron appreciate their bones.

Yes, the last ebberronian communities are lusty for dragon bones and their world holds no more of them. The only plausible solution is to venture into other material planes and hunt the different and wonderfull dragons that dwell in it.
Just like pirates did in their time, bands of thieves venture in fliying ships known as Planeriders that use fuel made out of dragon blood to randomly travel throught the many material planes.
Though it may sound fun, this is very risky bussines. For the most advanced of dragon societies have already ventured into the different material planes hunting for dragon hunters.
Material plane traveling is always random, not even dragons can predict were their own blood'l take them.

What'ya think?
do I have any special right for being the first to post an idea?

All the crunch stuff can be discussed on my board

johnflytn.proboards98.com

check out the World Building section at the bottom.

The reason I've moved the discussion out of Wizards/gleemax is because building a world is going to take alot of people working on lots of different areas.

Instead of trying to keep up in one thread here, or start dozens, I've just modifed the message boards I use for my weekly D&D campaign.

Hop over and check them out...

See the "Intent and purpose" and "Proposals" and "how proposals work" to jump right in.
