hullo hullo, im kinda stuck with my campaign an would like a few suggestions. my pcs are all level 5 (paladin, cleric, rogue and sorcerer). The monk was killed by the antagonist, a lich(actually he was just paralized but they thought he was dead so they left him in a ditch>.>). after getting beaten by the lich they woke up in a drow stronghold, and when they made their way out they were in unfamiliar lands, the southern part of which is under siege by an unknown blue half dragon fighter general, gae'erd(he used to be the leader of that regions army until he betrayed them), with his band of half dragons who the pcs later learn are working for the lich. the northern part isnt aware of this as they have basically sealed the southern area from the north. aanyway they tried to help defend a villiage under attack but failed and the lich approaced them and they blacked out and awoke to the smouldering ruins of the town. right now they rushed to the second town under attack (3 in total, 1 got destroyed) they fended off the attack on the west gate and are now rushing to the other gates to help defend over there.

now some problems im having. i just make stuff up as i go along and that can lead to a few plot holes in my story if i dont do this just right. i would appreciate a few ideas to mull over in the ol' noggin about what is going on. mainly why did the lich let them live when he killed the monk, and when they failed to defend the first town. why did gae'erd betray the region. why are the half dragons working for the lich. and just a few more general things.

Sounds like you overstepped yourself a little bit.

First of all, maybe the lich wants them to do something for him. Maybe it is his way of saying "behold, I have spared your lives more than once to demonstrate my good intentions..."

As for the half dragons perhaps they are enchanted or are acting on the lich's behalf in return for something he can give them, the breaking of a curse or critical information perhaps?

Whew looks like you have your work cut out for you man.
Well what are you characters objectives? Are they just trying to defend the town? If thats the case then maybe the Lich is betraying the dragons by having your adventurers kill them as they come so the Lich can absorb the Magical energies of the dragons as they die? Or maybe he's harvesting the dragon's organs for spell components/to consume (Dragon book has awesome ideas for uses of dragon parts as consumables)?
On a more obscure note if the lich was originally male and you have a female character in your group(or vice versa). Maybe the lich is sparing the party because the female/male in your group reminds him of someone he loved in life?
As for the dragons betrayal the lich could have slowly convinced or tricked their leader that the people of these lands were killing his kin to gain power or out of spite. Would be pretty easy planting dragon bodies then having an agent put up some bulletins in town with anti dragon propaganda on them.

Well those are just my ideas. Kinda a hard situation to pull off but you'll prob end up doing back tracking in the story to plant it.

ya those are some definatley good ideas.
btw the pc's objective is to find out were they are. they have no clue were they are and are heading to the capital city to find a way back and just helping out along the way and getting sucked into this war.(the lich is female btw)

Interesting. So do they know how their memory was erased or were they ported there accidentally? If they don't know how they got there then the lich deffinitly could have brought them there (unless you already had that planned out).

they encountered the lich, blacked out, then wound up somewhere completely different(monk dead)

Nice. Tell me the Lich is a practical joker. HAHAHA. That would be awesome if he's just screwing with the party. Kinda like dude weres my car with undead.

but yes i spose the lich needed a reason to bring them were they are now. so far im liking the whole "the lich is testing them to see if he can use the pc's" approach

Go with it man. Your PC's will laugh and say they hate you, but it will be worth it.

How about one or more PCs is actually a descendent of the lich and he's willing to be patient and let them live so they can convert to a "reasonable"point of view?

Yes. And then before the final battle, the Blue Dragon will come to the group and say to the Sorceror: I am your father!

And the Lich will ask the group to join him and become evil with him. The group will fight against the dragon, and will almost win. Very close to his end, the Lich tries to atack the party, but the Dragon says "NOOOO!!!" and kills the Lich to save his son.

That would be quite original.

Lol. Why are you ripping on the guy for having a plot straight from star wars? Ha.
