| Harleaquinn07-29-07, 12:50 PM | I have an idea for a new campaign, and I'd like to run it by a few guys on the WotC boards first, before I start typing it fully out. My idea is to do a little twist on many "basic" ideas. First off races, this is going to be a world that finally gets rid of the "Human norm", while humans will exist, they are not the "majority race" of the world. There is none. Where certain cultures and region may have slightly more of one race then another. There is no broad sweeping race that is in obvious majority worldwide. I also plan on adding quite a few new races, and changing the PHB races slightly to fit my new world concept. Among these, I plan on creating a no level adjustment version of the centaur. As well as a cat race, and wolf type race. I'm also going to probally be including other races outright stolen from other settings (such as eberron). The world itself will be rather large, closer in size to say saturn rather then the size of earth. Next up, I plan on making an extremely large set of deities, some of which will obviously be overlapping. I like the idea of having many many many different pantheons that exist throughout the world. While the gods will not physically exist in the world, they will actually exist, and people with access to powerful magics can actually travel and meet with their deity (a humbling experience, to say the least). The technology level will be on par with a 16th-17th century earth meaning primitive gunpowder weapons and the like (that take a minute to reload). However certain cultures will have a more "steampunk" level, while others will have remained focus on the rules of chivalry and still using such. The magic level will also be slightly more advanced, not quite on par with eberron. Magic arms and armors, are going to be slightly more rare, harder to make etc. Each weapons or suit of armor will have a name (similar to the ghostwalk setting) and allmost allways a unique ability, even if its only a minor glamour effect like the blade allways seems to be dripping blood. While truly minor wonderous items, as in those under 1,000 GP pricing will be able to be bought and sold, anything more powerful then that though will rarely be bought or sold unless its an expendable item (Potions scrolls, wands, etc.). These items are far more likely to be bartered and traded. I'll add more later, but if anyone would be willing to comment on it so far, I'd love to hear. |
| Archus Forix07-29-07, 02:33 PM | seems like a good idea. I have a feeling it will be very rich, diverse and wonderful when you pull it off! But with that sort of scale it will take a LOT of work to do, even when you have the resources you stated. But I say go with it, and be sure to take it step by step and not get carried away. Campaign Setting building is probably the most rewarding aspect of creation for a DM and it should be done carefully so errors or inconsistencies. Good luck! |
| unundindur07-29-07, 03:10 PM | Seems like a nice start, keep us posted :) I am interested in hearing how you want your gods to interract, it sounds like they may be a lot more active than in most settings. Am I right? I am especailly interested in the gods since my own world do not have any :) |
| Harleaquinn07-29-07, 03:54 PM | Yes, the gods will be a lot more interactive then in most settings. While they wont be walking around and such, it wont be uncommon for the faithful to literally get divine mandates from their heavenly patrons. A god of war could, should, and probally will speak to a ruler in his dreams, telling him that if he wages a war on his neighbors, he and his priests will grant that kingdom a blessing. A god of fertility could be motivated to let a barren woman have a single child. A god of knowledge could be convinced to share his knowledge with someone who is smart, strong and brave enough to come to his plane and ask, but probally not without a cost unless it was one of his most faithful. Gods will NOT show up to bail their followers out, but that doesnt mean they wont send a champion of their faith to do the job for them. |
| Harleaquinn07-30-07, 10:57 AM | Race list: These races are going to be the PC playable races for my game remember, these races may all change in the slightest or greatly. This is gonna take a while to type out. Heh. Maybe i should make a wiki or messageboard of my own to work on this. |
| queenfange07-31-07, 12:16 PM | That's a TON of races. Not that I object, it's just quite unusual, and it might be a bit challenging to keep them all straight. That said, I look forward to seeing more (particularly on dawn elves and dusk elves). In my opinion, Surpin, Lupin, and Felin are a tad bit uncreative, so you might consider renaming them something a bit more distinctive. As far as organizing your stuff, I use www.eruvian.com for my campaign setting, and while the site is still fairly new, it's rather helpful for me to organize myself. I recommend you take a look at it. I hope to see more soon! |
| taradusis07-31-07, 11:03 PM | I would consider having a lot of small, competing nations like renaisance italy. If each nation was race-based and had its own set of deities it could provide a logical basis for this many races/deities.Consider also having an Archipellago of Wonder with 80-800 island nations, this would allow for a Pirate campaign,an Age of Exploration campaign and a merchant campaign. If you need island ideas I have a thread 771660 that has aquatic notes, feel free to borrow my ideas.GOOD LUCK |

I agree- awesome idea. Renaissance Italy's city-states could be an excellent model for your campaign, if taken to an extreme (dozens as opposed to several). |
