Fate Points

The use of Fate points is an optional game mechanic that can be tailored to any campaign in which resurrection magic is very, very uncommon, or is altogether impossible. It makes a great addition to adventures such as EtCR, and Tomb of Horrors.

Many people believe that their fate is written in stone -- accepting what has to be. However, wiser souls claim that fate is a tangible force that can be manipulated by proper understanding! Stories abound of people who just refuse to embrace death, rising from the dead multiple times to start yet another lease on life.

PCs cannot have anymore than 10 Fate points at any given time. This cap exists to prevent point hoarding!

Awarding Fate Points:
At the end of each gaming session, the DM awards each player with Fate points. Each player should not receive anymore than 2 points. Outlined here are the guidelines for awarding these points.

Denying Fate's Embrace:
If a PC has had a near death experience -- fallen below 0 hp -- and survived, he earns a point.

Outwitting Fate:
If a PC exhibits great ingenuity, using impressive and unexpected tactics to deal with a plot device, award him a point.

Spending Fate Points:
Anytime a PC dies, the player can elect to burn a number of Fate points to immediately utilize one of the following as per the spell. Reincarnate costs 4 points, raise dead costs 5 points, resurrection costs 7 points, and true resurrection costs 9 points.

This could work well for my group as noone ever wants to get stuck playing the friggin cleric. You could even throw in a 1 point Speak With Dead. Mostly useless but could be fun for parting words.
