| Swiftpaw_Fatfox08-20-07, 06:18 PM | I'm trying to create my own campaign world, called Carnivoria. But I'm not sure what kind of world it should be (ie Oriantal Asia, Ancient Europe, Midevil Europe, Carribian, MezoAmeric, Middle East, Renasaunce Europe, India, Ancient Egypt, Africa etc). One friend has suggested Japan. I also need to determine races and classes for that world (all races need to be animal like, no human-like races). Please and thank you all :) |
| Johnny_Angel08-20-07, 07:42 PM | I can't help but to think that dinosaurs would somehow be involved in a place called Carnivoria, but I suppose that's a problem with me...word association. I think Japan would be pretty cool. Japan with a few dinosaurs running around the wilderness, and with a bunch of different fuedal lords warring with each other for supremacy - sorta like the period when Oda Nobunaga was fighting to unite Japan; also similar to the Three Kingom's period of China. |
| Dog_O_War08-20-07, 08:09 PM | I will suggest that you instead use native america before the settlers arrived. Japan is a horse to often struck as a setting, and animalistic races work very well within native american culture. You could have mountain lions, bears, wolves, deer, moose, etc... as themes for the races, with conflict between the herbavores and carnivores being very prevailant. Also, with the werecreatures in the MM, it could be like some kind of racial curse that plagues the carnivores, forcing those inflicted to prey apon their own kind. Just a thought. |
| Angorath08-20-07, 08:10 PM | What scope do you want your campaign world to be? Do you want to develop a whole planet with no humans/humanoids? Are you going to focus on just one continent? |
| Johnny_Angel08-20-07, 08:13 PM | Dog made a good suggestion. One interesting thing about some Native American cultures is that they believe there are two different types of werewolves: a good kind and an evil kind. IIRC, the good kind were wolves first who were sent to protect man; those wolves learned how to/were given the power to (depending on which tribes mythos you follow) change into men so that they could protect men and guide them. The evil kind (IIRC) were men who wanted to learn the magic that allowed the wolves to turn into men so that they could use that power for their own selfish goals; so, the evil werewolves were men who learned how to change into wolves. I only suggested Japan because you said that one of your players was interested in that. |

Actually that's a very good idea to set up a native american style culture. The problem now is how many known continants/regions there should be, how many different races to start out with and which classes to use |

I plan on starting with one continent/region and the expanding from there. But as far as races are concerned there are no demi-humans |

I'm using the different books I have, MM, MM2, MoF, RotW, SS, OA, and some creatures I printed out |

Vanaras and nezumi (both from OA) are good races, and I'd certainly consider including those. It sounds like you are already considering a fox race (kitsune); what about a bovine or deer-like (I'm not sure what adjective is appropriate for that group) race? Something with cloven feet or hooves, antlers or horns, and slender tails... Just a thought; cat, wolf, and fox races are common (arguably over-used), but how often do you see deer people? For classes, I'd again look at what OA uses, though I'd leave out the samurai and change the shujena (sp)'s abilities to be more primal and less noble. Sohei and wu jen might not fit either, and you may want to keep the bard or druid PH classes. |

Classes- Shugenja: Uses wisdom instead of charisma and no school spells Other classes: Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue, Shaman, Sorcerer Races- Catfolk, Nezumi (displaced), Vanara (displaced), Urizan (Bear race), Bovira (Bovine race), Caninite (Canine race), Unglar (Ungulet race; ie deer, antalope etc.) New Feats- Swallow Whole is a feat; prerequisites are BAB +1, Bite attck, Improved Grapple -Improved Swallow Whole, can swallow equal size; prerequisites are Swallow Whole, BAB +5 Creature Types Removed- Magical beast, monsterous humanoid, giant, vermine, outsider (they are subtypes) Subtype removed- Shapechanger (Shape shifting can only be obtained by magic) Equiptment- Weapons and Armor are made of bone, wood, leather, and stone instead of metal Money- Bone Chips (BC) 1 GP= 1,000 BC |

| taradusis08-25-07, 07:00 AM | I would consider using something else as money.Pieces of leather with a hundred beads sewn on it.This is a convenient way to carry beads untill they can be used to decorate clothing.Makes a good money.dried beans last for years.Cocoa, coffee and pea beans could be used as money. The aztecs used cocoa beans like copper pieces. In america we used tobacco leaves as money.A storehouse could issue pieces of silk with an imperial"chop"or signature, turn it in at the store house and get a measure of rice or salt?Easy to carry and the calligraphy is pretty?RANDOM THOUGHTS |

Something with cloven feet or hooves, antlers or horns, and slender tails... Just a thought; cat, wolf, and fox races are common (arguably over-used), but how often do you see deer people? I've played in a game like this before, we used deer. (And it's cervine :) ) Classes- Shugenja: Uses wisdom instead of charisma and no school spells I wouldn't play this, the shugenja is already a bit less interesting than just playing a sorcerer (spell selection is limited, no familiar, "dogma" and focus for all your spells) and this just takes away from the class. I recommend leaving the shugenja like it is. Other classes: Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue, Shaman, Sorcerer Races- Catfolk, Nezumi (displaced), Vanara (displaced), Urizan (Bear race), Bovira (Bovine race), Caninite (Canine race), Unglar (Ungulet race; ie deer, antalope etc.) This is nice, but have you decided on a society? I didn't see any actual decision and the classes/races allowed should reflect the type of society that's being played. Also, the races seem to be the ones you'd typically see in a game like this, it's slightly unoriginal. Canines, Bears, Cats, Rats, and (somewhat less often seen) cows/deer. You're forgetting a very large portion of the animal kingdom. No insects, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles? Nothing? You don't even have birds listed... :( New Feats- Swallow Whole is a feat; prerequisites are BAB +1, Bite attck, Improved Grapple -Improved Swallow Whole, can swallow equal size; prerequisites are Swallow Whole, BAB +5 So my medium-sized wolf can swallow your medium-sized cow? Something just seems odd and possibly broken about that. I'd recommend leaving swallow whole to the big animals. (And the races you've mentioned thus far chew their food, or at least rip it into smaller chunks. :) Creature Types Removed- Magical beast, monsterous humanoid, giant, vermine, outsider (they are subtypes) Why are you getting rid of magical beasts? There's no monstrous animals? No giant eagles, no griffons, etc? And no vermin? This world has no bugs!? I would also recommend you change the name, Carnivoria only works with some cultures. (and not really with a Japanese- or Native-themed one) The name should reflect the culture, not just be tacked on. All-in-all though I think you've got a great idea to start with, you just need to refine it some. :) |
