Many years ago I wrote up a vague idea of a world and drew a map, and started playing DnD with some friends making up a lot of things as I went along. I like the world and new it had allot of possibilities, but was kind of busy, and my group wasn't strong and soon died.

About a year and a half ago, a group of my new friends and I started talking about DnD. We all seem interested in playing and I had the DM experience, minimal as it was, so I asked for a few eeks prep and said we'd try playing and see how we like it.

I found my old map but nothing else and started rebuilding. I had a vague idea of a big story, but decided that the immediate story and world was the most important. After all, we didn't even know if we wanted a regular game. So I made a dungeon and some NPCs, a town and a story. I allowed all Players Handbook races so we could jump right in.

Long story short, people wanted to keep playing, so I started fleshing out the big story line and the world and now we're almost done with a major campaign. However over the course of playing in this world I decided there were allot of things I liked, and some things I didn't. I was invested in the world however and so were the players. I decided that the best way to change the world, was allow the players to do it for me.

One I decided the Gnomes weren't enough of crazed inventors. I wanted someone to slowly bring in more technology in strange and fun way. So I poke around some boards and bored a race and changed it to my own liking, making the Burads. Small Dragon like humanoids with a knack for item creation. I had the PCs discover them and introduce them to the world. This also lets me introduce warforged as acceptable option.

I decided I didn't like halflings. Not that I have anything against the furry little guys. But I couldn't see them as a useful culture. They didn't seem to have a niche in my world. So I've had a disease being introduced that seems to spread particularly quick in halflings. The churches have been trying to keep it under control, but theres only so many free clerics.

I'm think about having a number of them flee into the ocean to create an exceptionally small island nation. That way they could become a strong seafaring, secluded culture. And if a PC really wanted to be halfling he would only have to be immune to disease.

This will later be linked to the introduction of Burads to society.

I also wanted a slave race. The Dwarves have been heavily at war with the Goblins and with the PCs help the Dwarves have been winning by alot. No reason to kill all the goblins though.

Has anyone else used the PCs to change the world, instead of just changing it yourself?

Any suggestions on how to further implement my changes, or what else this may lead to?
