Here is the basis for a campaign I have been rolling with off and on.

Magical empire in the distant past explodes into civil war. The capital city is lost with everyone thinking it was destroyed in the final shots of the war. This is what really happened.

The lay out of the city is unique as far as I can tell. The city is set up circular in nature with 3 rings. The inner ring was the main castle for the ruling family and royal guard/administration. The second ring was divided up into one section for each of the major colleges of magic with two extra areas to make up the things that did not fit a specific school but was still magical in nature one was the Druid grove and the other was the generalist area(ie Artificers, alchemists, the great library, and the magical bazzar). Then there was the special colleges of Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. These were colleges that were not specific to any one type of spell casting or college but focused on the use of elemental magic. The last ring of the city was the urban areas for all of the inhabitants. Then the whole thing was surrounded with a Huge city wall that was magically created.

The other features of note, were the remains of four towers near the city walls that were the home to the cities 4 High Magistrates that governed the laws on the use of magic in the city and the Great cathedrals to the major gods.

The backstory about this city is it is a mageocrocy rulled by a council of mages made up of the headmaster of each of the main colleges for magic. The tie breaker vote is given to the royal family which were unique in the fact that they were immune to the effects of all magic. This let them keep thier standing in the city and neutrality when it came to things like charms and curses.

The civil war started and ended in the capital. Each of the colleges had an ultimate defense/final strike of some kind that was triggered during the last days of the civil war.

Envocation - Super nuke spell with radiation fall out
Divination - everyone dissapeared the day before the civil war broke out in the city
Abjuration - Anti magic field grenades went off blanketing the college
Conjuration - Summoned horde (10's of thousands) of non humans into battle
Illusion - Triggered a massive death trap dungeon effect that drives people insane if they are in it for very long. Special effect that true sight is suppressed in its boundries.
Necromancy - Super undead with hive mind, think Necrons from Warhammer 40k crossed with the borg.
Transmutation - Super soldier creatures and soldiers with massive changes to thier structure. Magical cyborgs, grafts, ect.
Enchantment - Slave orb similar to Illithid. Mass domination
Druid grove - Man eating jungle was unleashed
Fire college - 100ft tall wall of flame that acted like disintergrate surrounded it
Water College - Sunk under water turning it into a lake with a city under it.
Earth College - Drilled into the earth enmass making an underground city area
Air College - Floating air castle defended by Air elementals and dead air(Vacum zones)

The city was blasted out of this dimension by the forces unleashed near the end.

This created pockets of certain planes that travel with the city as it is effectivly outside the realm of reality in a pocket universe. There is a small plane of shadow, mirror, ect. Access to the hells is restricted plane shifting to certain planes is dangerous at best instant death at worst.

The edge of the world is around 2 miles around this city. The inhabitants had to fight magic storms, summoned creatures, magial traps, starvation, and radiation like sickness related to lingering magical energies.

Advance the inside of the city 600+ years.

Think "Fallout" with magic. There are pockets of civilization with large areas of bandits/barbarians ruling much of the city. Magical creatures roam freely around the city and wealth/power is yours for the taking if you dare the wastes.

Necromancy - Super undead with hive mind, think Necrons from Warhammer 40k crossed with the borg.

A+ unless you count the borgs.. then A-, Just Necrons own!!

Anyways, I like the idea even if it's a little hard to understand. Just one thing, all the apocalyptic events occured on the same day... weird... cause you see... The nuke kills everyone, except they already left, But both those effect were cancelled by antimagic wich also cancelled the sumonning. Except everyone went insane for being a dungeon that they couldn't ahve been in if they all left the day before...

I don't get it! Unless of course each of those things happened only in their own regions(wich is kinda stupid) "I'LL NUKE MYSELF! haha take that me!!!"

Or it's the weapon that they used against each other? (the Evocers threw nukes at other ppl?)

...

I don't get it!

But i like it

The college weapons were used by some both inside and outside the college. There are areas of the city that are blasted by Envocation magic nukes and the college itself got blasted hard when as a final strike they blasted themselves as they were over run. Its funny most of the colleges were protected against direct hits by their own protection spells and magic objects.

Illusion covers the whole area they controlled. It is rumored their own people were unaffected for some reason .

The conjuration college weapon eventually got out of control and went rogue as thousands of orcs/goblins/ogres went on a rampage all over the city. Their decendants still wander the city today as a threat.

The Necromancy college went silent after the conflict its rumored the soldiers still sleep waiting for the time to rise again. Also it appears as if there is a range around which the new super undead can travel. I used the oblisk concept as mobile power nodes that corrupted the ground around it with necrotic mist from cityscape. The super undead can not stay in areas without that mist.

The concept I went with was that even years later each college has reminants of the original super weapons that remain a threat to the remaining people in the city.

so most had their weapons back fire?

Just for fun make a ultimate weapon for necromancy (the night bringer) kinda fluffy too (anyone else who doesn't know him, google is your friend)

I like the idea but what with the party? do they come from inside the city or they end up there? Is most of the campaign taking place there or only the end? or even the beguining?, how many players?:P

alot of questions, i know, sorry:P

The best part is that I can run it from either side of things.

The party could be natives trying to survive or outsiders that got too close to the city on one of its short appearances in the real world before vanishing again.

The weapons did not so much as backfire as when you have multiple epic lvl spells of each college going off at once there is room for as much Deus ex Machina as you want.

The campaign is planned for after the main war 600 years in the future. City population has dwindled down to about 10k from the near 100k it had at its height.

Player count is 4-6 with room for one NPC to round the party out.
