I have put the PC's through some rough times in my campaign, exposed them to some harsh truths and sent the forces of hell after them.

Now it's time for a break. There is a Gnome Illusionist who I figure could be a good character to play a cute, intended to be harmless, prank on the PC's.

Any suggestions?

This seems rather sudden. I assume they've delt with the "harsh truths" and "the forces of hell"?

If you have then I have an idea drom a Tintin book. Have them set out on a trip and have your Illusionist lead them off track to his uncles tavern or something. You know, "Rockslide, road is out, detour this way". This would lead them off the main road into the wild. They'd come upon a road, a different one, that eventually would lead to where they were going but in the short term led to this inn.
