| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 06:05 AM | To be started in 1 week. NEED HELP, ADVICE, AND CRITISISM! This plot/story is to be a background for a world that players can either stumble across or discover through odd encounters. Here goes: Many tens of years ago, a man came to be lord over all the lands by slaying some great evil. This man is a dragon. He like manipulating people towards his own selfish desires and opening the doors of chaos. He decided the best way would be to disguise himself as a human and gain the trust of the humans by way of slaying his father...whom the people believed all chaos spawned from... (when in truth he spawned what brought chaos by a woman he loved.) This elder dragon was a truly neutral being who sought balance in everything and was no threat to the humans. His son however wanted the power and control his father had over the land, so he brought chaos and danger to the humans, who immediatly blamed the elder dragon and tried for many years to kill him. The elder dragon, being a wise and powerful dragon, could never be defeated and disapeared. The humans grew fearful of his wrath and sought help whereever they could find it. the son saw that this was his chance and came to the humans as one of them. He betrayed his father by revealing his location, and knowing his father best, was able to slay him. He was renowned as a hero and instantly given all he asked for. They created a lavish keep/castle for him and uprooted their current lord to make the son their new lord. For a while he was satisfied with the lavish gifts and power, but soon he wanted more and imposed rediculous tax laws throughout the lands. Only the highest nobles were exempt, while all the commoners were driven into poverty. The PCs come wandering into the lands to find many problems and requests for help from the commoners. It seems that the lord of the lands is only concerned with protecting the nobles and his own vast wealth. The nobles enforce the taxes, thus serving their lord. Even though the lord has estinguished the dragon, the chaos seems to be worse. The towns have many problems ranging from lack of resources (raids, lands being claimed by chaotic beings) and threats from powerful creatures/ mobs The Elder dragon was supposed to be Nuetral.. he had a neutral aura that seemed to invoke a balance to all that surrounded him. perhaps when his chaotic son killed him, it created an inbalance attracting chaotic creatures... The spirit of the dragon can be summoned at the place of his death...that is if you manage to figure out how after killing the monsters who have made it their home. Also the lord knows of the chaos brought onto his people but he only sends resources to gain for himself. He's been recently setting his eyes on other lands outside his own, greedy for more power and wealth. (he has even been sneaking out of his castle at night to spy on neighboring countries..in dragon form) Eventually this is noticed by one powerful country, that decides to send scouts(the PCs) in the direction witnessess have seen the dragon come and go. The country has heard in the past of the problems with dragons and wants to see if it is a threat to them or if it even exists. That is why they sent some of their lowest to ascertain the situation. Upon arrival the PCs find the country in complete distress! should they try to help them? or continue on with their mission? Will the towns cries for a hero against the countless goblin raids and slaughtered innocents go unnoticed? When asking about dragons the commoners will only know of the elder and the final battle that led to them electing their new lord. They know nothing of any other dragon...perhaps the richer towns may know of the location where the elder died. The NPCs in the outer towns will constantly be angry/despaired about their lord and the taxes. They may ask the PCs to ask for some assistance from their lord and relief in their taxes. The lord isnt interested in meeting lowly people, and wont be interested in the PCs unless they start to make a name for themselves...when word first reaches his ear of them, there may be a problem he delegates to the nobles to hand to the PCs. Most of the nobles are more concerned with their own safety then that of the commoners, and wont be easily budged. They will pass duties to the PCs to appease the people and eventually the PCs will recieve a request to dine with the lord himself. The lord when asked of dragons will speak of his great battle and will even go as far as to tell them where the event took place. He doesnt know of any other dragons...and if they tell him that they were sent to locate the possible threat, he will react defensively saying "really, now, do you think I would let another dragon wander around after the trouble the last caused? I take my duty to protect my people from such troubles quite seriously." Attacks on his character (not the NPC but his honesty/integrity) for not defending his people from the countless OTHER threats are not welcome. He will inform the PCs that it is the nobles duty to protect the people from small threats like those, and if you think that his policies arent fair you can leave. Constant attacks on his character will result in him banishing you from his sight, perhaps even imprisonment. In fact, it seems that most people who become a thorn in his side either disappear or are imprisoned for treason. He won't be in company with you again without a MASSIVE donation to his wealth. *Is this an interesting backstory? *please give advice *Anyone know anything about waterfall caverns? btw..read the whole thread for other information on towns Selee is a town nestled in farmlands by the banks of lake selee. The townsfolk rely heavily on fish for self sufficiency. Due to high taxes, the farms are now owned by a noble in Milturn. He pays a modest sum to the townsfolk for their services. mainly tobacco and cotton are grown, then harvested to be sent down river to the richer countries for trade. most families have their own small patch of land to grow vegetables(onions potatos). a few may own goats for milk. (possible encounter..first encounter for pcs is a gnoll making an escape with one of those goats.) The tavern is run by sasha (wife of brutus, head fisherman), an attractive (busty) woman in her 30s. She makes sure all the fisherman have a warm meal and a little eye candy after a hard days work. (her hired help is mainly busty young brunettes) She has a mean right hook and is deadly accurate with a whip, so stay in line. The women of the town have a very close relationship with their husbands and are trusted to carry the work load. When the men return, they give all their catch to the women, who then dry or smoke the fish and prepare them for trade. a small amount is set aside for the town. A half-orc barbarian (retired), Trogdor, is the blacksmith of selee. His adventuring days behind him, he was content to settle in the small fishing town. He generally spends his day making spears, metal rods for hooks, and light armors for the fisherman. A logger and woodsmith, has been having trouble with pixies lately, so the trade in that area has suffered. There is a leather worker who makes boots and other small items, and most of the people in the town make their own cloth items. |
| WotC_Huscarl10-23-06, 01:55 PM | It's a laudable goal. What you have here, however, is not an adventure. It's backstory. It's exposition that the PCs will encounter by having a talking head (you) explain it to them. It's a start, but it's only a start. What you need to do now is begin figuring out what the PCs will actually need to do in this situation in order to triumph. Militarize the peasants and lead a rebellion? Find a way to sneak into the castle and assassinate the dragon? Dive into the local dungeon and recover the Sword of the Ancients, the only weapon capable of slaying the dragon? Locate the exiled dragon and persuade it into returning to scour the kingdom? Organize the peasants into a workers' collective and throw off the shackles of capitalist oppression? These are the questions that need answers next. Steve |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 03:14 PM | Well one thing i need to know is what kind of dragon the elder is and what kind the son is. I could use some advice for encounters that will bring the PC closer to discovering the truth. I don't want it to be a "railroad" (i think its called?). I want the dragon son to be like THE END but they dont have to know that right away and they can do whatever else they want , and be in countless adventures before they even BEGIN to uncover the truth. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 03:24 PM | The elder dragon is dead...unless there is a way to bring him back as a restless spirit at his death site...I read something about dragon skellies/zombies once tho. |
| WotC_Huscarl10-23-06, 03:40 PM | If they're father and son, wouldn't the elder and younger dragons be the same type? Consider restricting this setting to just one type of dragon. If you have the full range of D&D dragons, then it would be logical for some sage to step up when all this is happening and declare, "Wait a minute, everyone. Green dragons are evil! We don't want this dragon in charge!" Or allow two types -- the one that's currently in charge and some other, mythical type that the PCs could seek out and recruit to help them overthrow the first and establish a benevolent rule. | Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 03:52 PM | Can the alignment be different? I want the elder to be true nuetral and the son to be either chaotic nuetral or chaotic evil. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 04:13 PM | arent there any nuetral dragons? |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 05:17 PM | Amethyst/mist dragon for elder. still looking for son |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-23-06, 05:29 PM | anyone have a resource on dragons? |
| sdragon198410-23-06, 10:28 PM | draconomicon. don;t own it myself, but its entirely about dragons. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-24-06, 12:14 AM | do you know any ONLINE resources? |
| Dethro10-24-06, 01:10 AM | Make them up. Edit an existing type. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-24-06, 01:45 AM | can u please offer more ideas on how the player characters come to find out about the lord? |
| Dethro10-24-06, 01:51 AM | There's always gossip in bars... Or perhaps someone the PCs know lets them in on a 'secret', and then disappears mysteriously... It'll be obvious after a day or two in town that there is something not right, and soon they'll hear someone in the tavern drunkenly state how mean the local lord is, and if they go probing with the right ideas (such as bribing etc) they'll find out the details about the lord soon enough. Of course, dropping hints that whomever goes and visits the site of the great dragon's lair never comes back, or comes back and starts muttering crazy talk, about piles of gold and other things, then it should interest them to seek out the lair. Now, when they get there, simply have the father as a ghost, perhaps a possessing ghost or something. Basically at times you have to bullsh*t your way into and out of things as a DM, so don't be afraid to completely make things up with disregard to the rules. |

I like these ideas. :) i want there to be about three-five towns. three being commoner and two richer (one of them being just outside the lords castle) |
| Dethro10-24-06, 02:09 AM | Also, you might want to look at your friends style of playing. What generally motivates their characters, for example? If you've got people who generally play characters that are greed-oriented, play up the fact there's a treasure trove out there waiting to be raided. If they're heavy on the whole 'I am good and therefore evil must die!!!!' then play up that part. If there's 3-5 towns, then have the peasants in the 5th town the most resentful of the lord (since they're the furthest away and the 'safest'). Also, in the end have all of the trouble end up coming from the area where the dragon's lair used to be. That way, whatever path they want to take (gold, power, good etc) they'll have to head there in the end. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-24-06, 02:28 AM | I'm thinking that each of the towns have their own seperate problems that should tempt the PCs. I'm thinking like 3-5 problems per town. I'm currently looking for a map to put these towns on. any idea for town problems? they can be caused internally or externally. |

| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-24-06, 09:15 PM | Ive found an interesting map..its from the usa lol...im going to use the land features and write my towns into them |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-25-06, 04:43 AM | Anyone have ideas for town names? |
| WotC_Huscarl10-25-06, 12:48 PM | Grab a few maps of countries that have the types of names you like (a map of Germany, for example, if you like Germanic-sounding names). Then either lift names directly (use the real names instead of the anglicized versions for variety -- Munchen instead of Munich, for example), lift names and give each a small twist (e.g., changing Nuremburg to Nuvemburg), or mashing two names together (e.g., combining Nuremburg and Munich into Nurenich). Steve |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-25-06, 02:22 PM | Anyone know anything about waterfalls and caverns? What kind of roads do average countries have? dirt? gravel? Is a road just a commonly travelled area with the grass worn out? |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-25-06, 02:26 PM | are there any monsters that tend to do a dragons bidding? or people know go hand in hand with dragons? |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-25-06, 03:08 PM | how many people are in an average fisherman/farmer town? |
| WotC_Huscarl10-25-06, 03:19 PM | That's all laid out on page 137 of DMG 3.5. For a small town, 900-2,000 total residents. Steve |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer10-25-06, 04:10 PM | that just seems like a bit much.. this is the smallest town sorry to keep talking i just want other people's opinions too lol. I've been working on the map and the town/cities trades. (also im doing all this without a DMG) |

| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-06-06, 02:06 AM | well im back and ready to start fleshing out the town of selee. Selee is a town nestled in farmlands by the banks of lake selee. | Mathas12-06-06, 01:37 PM | are there any monsters that tend to do a dragons bidding? or people know go hand in hand with dragons? Well lets se, virtually any monster can be used for a Dragon's bidding. Orcs for example make good gaurds and they have sense enough to know that as long as they do what the Dragon says it might just leave them alone. Same with Hobgoblins. Also Humans can be used by Dragons, even without a Charm spell or effect. Some Humans sometimes make bargains or deals with Dragons. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-06-06, 03:11 PM | kay. what about those night hags...would they make a deal with a dragon? |
| Agent Graves12-06-06, 06:06 PM | You've said that the dragon son has disguised himself as human- this must mean that he doesn't want the populous, and surrounding kingdoms to know that he is a dragon. What is his reason for this? is the dragon-son of such a low level that he can be taken down easily? is he afraid of other kingdoms attacking if they find out he is a dragon? Is there a prophecy about a dragon hunter, or a well-known dragon hunter roaming the lands? I think you should extend the scope of the campaign too- the dragon-son isn't the end, someone has been manipulating him to kill his father and make war on the surrounding lands. If you take this route, i think you could use an opposing King who wants to expand his kingdom and manipulates the dragon-son. One day, this opposing king will expose the dragon-son as a dragon and wage war on the sons land. If the dragon is hiding his real self, then when people visit the castle the dragon-son isn't going to want to give hints as to his heritage. Therefore, he'll have two groups of workers. The Exteriors are servants that are humans etc that are kept in the dark as to the dragon-sons heritage. The Interiors are the servants that are orcs or goblins (my favourite) that do his bidding. Maybe they're dwarves from the underdark mining toward other kingdoms. Maybe the way the dragon-son is waging war to expand his empire is; above ground he is all nice and diplomatic, opening trade routes, extolling the virtues of his kingdom. While underground his minions are attacking those routes, raiding and pillaging other kingdoms, undermining (litterally or figurativly) the other kingdoms defences. You can give the pcs hints about the king being a dragon-son. Kinda like foibles that the dragon-son can't get rid of coz; As the pcs enter the great hall, they find mountains of coins, lavish tapestry's adorn the walls, open chests piled with jewels, great statues, works of art, gold leaf paintings on the ceilings (check out european palaces), sculptures, luxuries from the far east... etc. So much wealth, (much like a dragon's horde) so much that it hurts the eyes of the pcs because it is polished and shines, reflecting the sun through the stain glass windows. Ofcourse, this is all a front. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-07-06, 08:34 PM | After freeing the lands of the the lord, they will learn of his mother...an evil badass mofo maybe she helped him kill the father |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-08-06, 12:40 AM | Pixie problem in Selee: The lumberjack Vjorn and his men have been puzzled as of lately to the recent happenings during logging. Seems a pack of private problem pixies has taken residence in their woods. They go into the forest everymorning (to look for that exceptional tree for a fine table/bed) but this morning was different. They thought they saw something moving and next thing they knew, they were waking up on the edge of the forest without their knickers! This in itself caused a spectacle when the fishermen came home to be blinded by the twigs and berries of groggy lumberjacks. Needless to say, the men are quite embaressed by the whole ordeal, and refuse to enter the forest until the situation is cleared up and their knickers returned. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-08-06, 03:48 AM | Their first encounter (possibly): Okay so they are traveling west from their country along a winding trail that follows the curves of lake selee. (A listen check will be made to see if they hear this) The group will hear the sound of a goat baying in distress and possibly twigs breaking. Then further up the road a hyena on its hindlegs, carrying a frightened goat, will break the clearing (and possibly notice them) pause and then continue onto the other side. (a successful nature check will tell them it is a gnoll) Then its up to them if they follow it or engage it. The young gnoll had just stolen a goat (which is the only source of milk for some poor baby) from a nearby farm, and is running back to its hovel just outside a clan of gnolls. The gnolls have been more attracted to babies lately.. but being a youngun and alone its probably the best he could do. If they catch the gnoll and kill it, they will recieve the goat which is tagged and will be recognized in town, which could possibly lead them to the farm it was stolen from and free room and board. If they ignore the gnoll or let it go, the gnoll will return to the clan and relay the fact that a crying baby was spotted on the farm and within a week, a gnoll will decide to test himself against the farmer to steal the screaming prize. If the gnolls get away with that, rumors will fly in the pub about the stolen baby and will eventually lead our adventurers to clear out the gnoll clan. |

| Joex_The_Pale12-08-06, 07:36 PM | First of all, you don't need to add new posts all the time, just edit the post you made. Having three posts placed within 3 minutes of each other gets a tad annoying. Second, if you are going to be creating a campaign, for crying out loud, BUY THE DMG!!! Making an adventure, never mind an entire campaign, without the basic books is like painting the Mona Lisa without brushes! Sheesh! Now, as to your campaign, you have an interesting idea. Indeed, hags could work with the dragon. The question is; why would they? What do either of them have to gain from working with the other? Does the Dragon need hag allies? Do the hags need the Dragons protection? Are they both working towards some evil master plan together? Answer these questions and you will have the seed of a cool campaign. But, and listen carefully now, YOU need to answer these questions. We can give you ideas, but YOU need to fill them in. If the final product doesn't come from you, then when the PCs do something unexpected, (and they will, trust me!) you won't have a clue as to what to do about it. But if you have created the backstory and filled in all the missing pieces, then when they go off-course, you can figure out what they find with just a little quick thinking. Because YOU know it all, having just finished creating it. Get my point? :) And good luck! We'll be here to assist you in fleshing out your ideas and giving you inspiration for new ones when you need it. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-10-06, 09:39 PM | The PCs will go through a dungeon crawl, designed to challenge them to impress the lord of their country which will make him decide to send them on the more important mission of finding the dragon. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-10-06, 09:52 PM | The hags follow the dragon because he provided them an excellant opportunity to....gather specimens...for their experiments. *cackles* The hags follow his orders to maintain anonymity, but they follow his mother over anything else..mainly out of fear. ---- end of story arc: Armies of undead have been pillaging northern (or southern) villages and the sheer number of them suggests some powerful magic at work. The PC's are sent to investigate. (which will eventually reveal the artifact "amulet of undead" as being the root of the problem. The wearer of the amulet is a hill dwarf formally cleric of moradin, accompanied by human fighter and druid. The only ones who know of the true power of the amulet is the leader of the dwarves of pillage, a half-orc barbarian, and a half crazed sorceror.) They find undead being controlled in unheard of masses, and their lord will urge them to root out the problem. There will be undead orcs, zombie dragons, rock trolls, and ogres in the way of their goal. |

| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-13-06, 12:40 AM | The island in lake selee's northwestern banks are crawling with greenspawn (they killed off the pixies living there) setting up a hatchery. Scouts (greenspawn sneaks) are sent along the shores to assess threats from outside sources. This brought attention from the merfolk of lake selee. Being neutral good, they knew that the greenspawn would bring only trouble for them and others. The merfolk refuse to allow this evil to dwell in their lake. The merfolk are constantly at arms against eachother in a attempt to wipe the other out. --------------- The PCs are in service of the noble (need a name) of the country Rauden. Queen Loranys has delegated a task to their noble and he has chosen them to carry it out. "I have recieved word from our Queen of a task that she would like us to carry out." "Well, it seems there have been reports of a dragon sighted lurking on our borders, with the trouble caused by them these days we need to find out the location and motive of said dragon. It shouldn't be to hard, as we have reports of what direction it was last seen coming and going. Travel west to the country Glacia, and speak to the citizens of Selee. Perhaps they have seen or heard something. Oh, and btw, we have heard rumors of some of glacia's towns being troubled with poverty. Try to be a helping hand if possible." |

| thasis12-14-06, 01:00 AM | My suggestion for this sort of campaign is research french history. Their history is filled with a similiar sort of feudal ego-centric leader, driving the citizens into poverty. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-15-06, 04:57 AM | The noble orders them go to a neighboring town where they are to present payment for a very expensive, highly trained warhorse and then escort the horse back to the noble. It gets them out of town into the country and there you can throw just about anything at them, such as a few wimply bandits or a handful of kobolds. OMG THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED FOR MILTURN!! THANKS! I was wondering how to incorporate the fine stable there. (the noble owns it, he is half elf and so is his family so they raise very fine horses.) |
| Artifact12-15-06, 06:39 PM | Have a dragon taking over the throne is somewhat similar to an idea I've had for my setting. For the last five hundred years, the Empire has been ruled by a green dragon. He is not evil as might be expected however. Here are some modifications for dragons in my game that you will hopefully find helpful: Dragons are described in the Monster Manual. However, a dragon’s alignment is only fixed along the law-chaos axis, while the good-evil axis is variable. More than any other factor, alignment sets dragons of my setting apart from those of other settings. Traditional D&D dragons are concerned more about the good-evil axis; chromatic dragons and metallic dragons tend to say with their own kind because of their common philosophies of evil or good. Using these guidelines, the law-chaos axis is considerably more important. Those who endorse individualism, wild living, and destruction oppose dragons that favor order, cooperation, and civilization. Chromatic dragons have a 50% chance to be evil, a 35% chance to be neutral and a 15% chance to be good. For example, a red dragon is always chaotic but may be evil, neutral or even good. Metallic dragons have a 50% chance to be good, a 35% chance to be neutral and a 15% chance to be evil. For example, a silver dragon is always lawful but may be good, neutral, or even evil. Using these guidelines, a dragon's alignment isn't "locked in". You hinted earlier that this could hinder your concept? This shakes things up a bit, keeps the PCs (and the players) guessing (which is good, if I'm right about the style of campaign you're running). |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer12-18-06, 02:52 AM | your rules on dragons are certainly helpful. thanks, im sure i will use them |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer01-17-07, 04:15 PM | well hopefully the game will begin in a few weeks. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer01-20-07, 09:54 PM | well i would like help with the first few sessions of my first dming exp. They start as a newly formed group of mercenaries. im going to start off with a sort of gag quest in the begining that reveals harmless rats in a horse stable. this gives way to the main quest which will be given by their lord, in request of a more difficult task. they will make way towards Selee through a long wooded path (which will take about a day and a half, giving their characters time to get to know eachother) they have the gnoll encounter (referenced earlier) and then reach Selee. They will find noone in the town knows much about what they seek, but there are some problems. pixie problem, possible kidnapping of baby, and injured fisherman. brutus will most likely accept help from strangers to protect his rafts while fishing. pixies will leave party pantless, so they wont figure it out right away, kidnapping happens a couple days after they arrive. the kidnapping should lead to a gnoll encampment NE of Selee. there is a temple of farlaghn along the road to selee that will provide healing if necessary. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer01-29-07, 08:35 PM | if the characters ever were to end up in jail for commiting a crime, they would possibaly meet some important npcs. When the former lord chose to ignore the strangers warnings and the stranger returned with the dragon dead, the people rejoiced and threw their current lord in jail, and made the stranger their new king. He also threw the three highest nobles in jail when they protested him being sworn in and stood up for their lord. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer02-09-07, 01:41 PM | ok so after the pixies plot is uncovered and gnolls taken care of, the next course of action would be to take the wood and crops to Riverside, the trade town. there they would encounter the bandit theif problems. |
| Maxwell_Silverhammer02-28-07, 01:59 PM | The hag's henchmen have killed the majority of gnolls remaining in the hole. The one survivor (male) made way, injured, back to temple at late night. After incident with lumberjacks, (they go mad and nearly kill eachother and farm hands) the henchmen come to take them to the main town, to be punished. (the hags have been experimenting with the blood of gnolls and humans, and various other creatures. Through their alliances they create situations that give them excuses to abduct their research material. They have created a device to inject material into the veins of humans, using a pigs bladder and a sharpened metal spigot) Note: the hags have made three "hag eyes" one is worn at all times by their head henchman. The second is worn by the unsuspecting sultan of Thebes, given as a gift from the king. The third is unknown at this time. they have created barghests by crossbreeding goblins and wolves. the barghests guard the noble house they reside in. The hags make reports to the king, once a month. |
