| Jack Daniel03-07-07, 01:10 PM | I've posted this in other forums on these boards, but it didn't seem quite right to maintain a whole duscussion elsewhere. I decided a while back to re-write D&D, to do what I could combine basic D&D, 2nd edition AD&D, and 3rd edition D&D into a set of rules that uses the best rules from each. Now, as interesting and entertaining as that is, I've also decided to do what basic D&D did, back when the Rules Cyclopedia came out (actually, not all that long ago) and stick a default campaign setting at the end. Basic D&D gave us Mystara and the Hollow World (which made for just about the coolest setting ever). I'm using Faerith, the setting for my old 2nd and 3rd edition games that used to be titled "Relative Entropy." (I'm still fond of this title, but it says "campaign setting," not "standalone RPG." So I've re-dubbed my game title to "Engines & Empires" to make things sound slightly more generic.) Now the great thing about the setting descriptions in basic D&D was that they weren't all that detailed. "Pirates sail these waters." "This kingdom kind of resembles ancient Egypt." "Elves live here." It left a great deal to the imagination (rather unlike, say, the Realms or Eberron). I miss that, and so that's the sense that I'm going to try and re-create here. For now, I'm still plowing through the rules. (The link to what I have so far is in my signature. If you still can't find it, I recommend raising your Wisdom score and taking more Spot ranks at the earliest opportunity.) I'm presently five eighths of the way through the "player's handbook"-ish parts, but things are moving along at a pretty good clip. So consider this thread to be "space reserved." I'll be updating periodically as I complete new chapters, but the campaign setting stuff -- the fluff that makes it all worth while -- will be the capstone that ends the book. |
