I'm hoping to have some large battles in the background to add flavour to what the characters get up to.
I was surprised to see that Chaotic Evil gets the majority of foot soldier races (bugbears, ettin, gnolls, ogres, orcs, trolls) while Lawful Evil gets hardly anything (hobgoblins and kobolds) with Neutral Evil (drow, goblins) just as badly off. Humans and giants appear across the alignment range.

Have I missed any common (above ground) monsters that could fight on the side of Law?
At a pinch I could draft in hill dwarves but then they would just fight the hobgoblins and goblins.

Lawful Evil and Chaotic Evil do not need all their minions to match their allignment, they are usually happy to oppress anyone. Its just that creatures of the wrong alignment would be seen as not making good leadership material.

That's true but I was hoping to get a black-and-white Bloodwars flavour to the conflict. Like unruly masses of orcs and ogres charging across the field to take on more organised lines of hobgoblins (except I've never liked hobgoblins in all my years playing).

The shades-of-grey stuff I can do at the party encounter level.

So looking at the list again, I don't see kobolds being much of a battlefield force; goblins (who would fight for either side anyway) I've relegated to slave race status for other flavour reasons so they're going to be cannon fodder and not really battle-winners. Drow (and duergar and derro) are too subterranean for my needs.
