I've started working on my own custom world.
So far I have a single country which is where they'll begin. Which is what I originaly only intended to make for now. But I would much rather make a whole world seeing a single country, though has loads of options, is still quite limiting.
Before I start telling you what I have so far, I' like to ask if theres any already made threads or something that could help with my situation.

So far I've drawn out a map, though I think it's a bit to small, and I have decided on a few of the races in the country I have.

Actually I'm not going to ad more unless I need to.
All I have is races which I have semi-sorted anyway

This actually seems like it belongs in "What's a DM to do?" but once I get a grasp on everything I'l start turning this into athread for my world

Where would be the best place to start?

The country I have so far is called Azeran
It's mostly Human lands, but a few other races have ther own bits.
Wood Elves and various Goblinoids have one forest
While Forest Gnomes and Kobolds have another
Goliaths have the Southern Moountains and Mountain Orcs have the Northan Mountains.
Lizardfolk are currently in the swamplands but I might move replace them
If I replace them it'll be with the Corpse Template with a +2 LA

Theres the capital of Azera
A village called Daggerrock
2-3 other towns/villages
Theres be some in the two forests as well for each race
The mountains go all the way down the west side of the country, and the Orc's and Goliath's areas are serperated by a river.
A smaller mounain area exists an will have a Red Dragon nesting there.
I might have something else there but I'm not sure yet.

I've decide I want early firearms to be as common as your traditional D&D weapons
and I'm cinsidering a steam train
The way I see it, with races like Dwarfs and Gnomes existing in the world, technology would advance quicker in certain areas.
Oh yeah, also Air Ships

Now I need to work on the history of all the races

I'm not sure I'll be able to make a whole world :(

While it's an ambitious goal, it's not practical. All you have to do is build a convincing place to have a few adventures.

do not try to build a whole world at once.
where you are at is fine. as your group goes out and explore the lands past the ones you created tell them you need to take some tiem to flesh them out. and use the group to help flesh your new world. have them keep track of whats-his-name bartender in such-a-such town. it will make it feel more alive for them. and if you have someone who like to write or a good imagination have him/her come up with a history of one of the races to help you. using the history can help plan for adventures down the road. expole ancient battle fields now haunted by wraiths. where was that keep located? stuff like that. use them to do most of the work for you in fleshing it out.

How I see it, the best first step is to come up with a few locations and a few general ideas about the entire world (Namely changes to the base system and getting rid of any creatures you don't want in it and add your own)

I have a few things sorted out like character races and whats where.
Though my choices of races are a bit limiting, so one thing I was wondering was wether I should let them be whatever they want?

Second, is history that important. I know I'll have to have something for realism, but do I really need to go into an immense amount of detail?

I added something about technology to my second post. Could you tell me what you think?

for history you do not need alot of detail at first
stuff like major wars, when such-a-such a kingdom was form
kinda what you learned about history in the 4th grade
just the back bone

The players might spend a year or two real time in the homebase you start them in?So design a good homebase.Add some unique elements to make your world special and you should be okay.Consider adding an island chain for a piracy or exploration adventures? If you buy the D20 past booklet it will give you wild west items?RANDOM THOUGHTS

Do a player survey as well.See who likes to play what race/class combos?Think about having a themed party. If everybody is willing to play an elf you can write adventures easier.Common themes are;all one race, all worship same god,all one class(ex.everybody is a multiclass rogue for a mafia campaign). All wilderness(druid-rangers),All urban(rogue-mage).Consider what your favorite race or monster is to play as well!!!RANDOM THOUGHTS.

Fantasy Agriculture or Realistic Agriculture?

14th century France
Wheat yields: 6.6 Bushels of Wheat per acre
50lb grain x 6.6=330lb grain average

human need: 500lb/year/person

Sextary Taxation: Farmer gets one sixth of all agriculture produced
