I've never run a campaign, but I really didn't like how my DM was running things. After an argument that almost cost me some friends, I agreed to compromise. I decided I wouldn't optimize in his campaign, but instead I would run my own campaign with optimized NPCs. I found a notebook with some campaign ideas I had written down quite a while back, and under "how to bring the PCs together" there was Arena listed.

I think it could be a great idea, and this is what I've come up with thus far:
As you approach the city, one thing stands out above the rest. Protruding the skyline like a bullet through flesh, sits the remarkable domed Coliseum. Regardless of your heritage, everyone has at least heard rumors of the great Coliseum and what it has to offer to all.

(PCs enter or are already in the city)

The city seems to be alive. Whereas most cities have one area designated as the market, this one seems to be one large place to buy things. Stalls are set up on all corners, both sides of the street, people of all races and ethnicities walk the path. Horse- and Ox-drawn wagons enter and exit the city. If you had to describe it in one word, the city would be "Alive". Even from where you stand at the entrance to this fair city, the muffled cheering of the drunken crowd in the Coliseum can be heard. It would appear as if fate has guided you all to this city, today of all days.

(Here is where I would say: "Describe you characters without stating your class or your race. Describe your height, your physical appearance, and your visible equipment only.")

The Coliseum seems to call to each and every one of you. All around you, fliers hang displaying rewards and different events. What do you do?

[[I'm a terrible writer so if you see anything I should fix, please let me know.]]

I also need ideas for CR 4-6 gladiators. Feel free to make them optimized or not. I'll roll on random tables to see who they face. If you have a level 4-6 PC, all the better. The PC's are level 5.
If someone would like to make stats for the ruler/king of this fair city, feel free. Pretty much, he should be able to tell who has the spirit in them to fight, that way I don't have to beg the PCs to participate or something.

From here, I would have the ruler call the PCs in to his quarters to discuss an assignment. He would say something along the lines of,

"I need your help. I would do this myself but as you can see, I am a rather busy man."

I'm not sure what the followup quest should be though, and how could I make 1v1 fights fun for everyone?
