I dunno if this is the right place to post this, but.....

Well, I'm soon wanting to start DMing for our group. We're all readlly good friends, so no issues there, and all ideas will be judged upon by them if they want to have the campaign in the Forgotten Realms setting.

So I wanna have the campaign in Forgotten Realms, but I don't know the first thing about it. And I'm pretty sure a few of you guys know it pretty well. So all I'm asking for is a few basic things about it.

The whole idea for my campaign is a bit of war, urban combat, ship-to-ship combat and a bit of exploring.

Thanks.

There is a whole part of the forums dedicated to the Forgotten Realms, you may want to get suggestions there. My 2 coppers are get the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book, if you can find it. It will give you a lot of history and a good overview of the Realms.

1. I've already looked there, but sometimes the info is too spread out.

2. It's not exactly cheap for a guy with a part-time job. So I don't plan on getting before I know I really want to.

Well, in that case, you may want to read a couple of the novels. It'll give you a feel for the world to read a couple of the books. Not sure what the best ones to start with are, but i'm sure you can find some in your local library or in a used book store.

Sorry, but not a chance. I live in THE most isolated city in the world (no, I'm not kidding. Literally. I live in Perth, on the western coast of Australia). But thanks for your help. I just need a quick load-down, is all.

Check the Perth library catalogue anyway, you might be surprised.

Thanks. The Forgotten Realms is a fine campaign setting, that's been around for a very long time. It contains pretty much everything you could imagine a fantasy campaign world so you are bound to find at least one part of it you'd enjoy running a game in.

The mechanics are 3.0, and are updated to 3.5 in Players Guide to Faerun, so you might need to buy another book.

not sure what your budget is.

if you want a broad overview, the campaign setting book is very recommended and very well put together. get it on amazon cheap

if you jsut want to focus on one area of the realms (and they are damn big), just get the regional book. i recommend Silver marches or Unapproachable East as they seem to be the best written and comprehensive
