This is a small "point of light" area in a world whose civilizations have collapsed.

After a ruinous magical war, a small barren land that is dominated by evil spirits is reputed to hold artifacts that can heal the wounds (chasms, creeping desert) of the war.

Geography
The land is a large peninsular encased by a swirling acidic sea to the south, west and east, and to its north by a dense clinging jungle full of bizarre plants and sinking bogs. Numerous cliffs and escarpments dot the edges of the desert, while its sand choked interior has concealed chasms descending into the depths. In total area, this ravaged land is 400 miles long and from 200 miles wide at its top, to 5 miles wide at its southern tip.

The chasm
Deep gouges in the earths crust emit stinking gases, these sunless areas contain numerous caverns and tunnels, and many fleeing humans once took shelter in them. Their fate is unknown

The Genii
Tyranical despots that rule through might and fear, their lairs are magically concealed and their magical scrying means they have great knowledge of the inhabitants of their crumbling towns.
The Genii are powerful creatures (similar to Rakshasa), both in magic and physical. They use illusions to conceal their real shape. The Genii are interested in gold and slavery, it appears they are planar merchants who deal with devils concerning this merchandise. To this end they employ desert Gnolls to raid human settlements and do war upon each other to monopolize trade.

The Humans
The effects of the war and raiding have reduced the human population from 50000 to 5500. These survivors dwell in isolated villages on the periphery of the blasted desert, hemmed in by the Stained Sea, or the monster infested stinking jungle in the north. The constant threat of death or worse has turned some insane, and they worship death gods, committing suicide in the hope of rising as undead. Others have armed themselves with the rusting weapons and armour that is found throughout the blaster desert and fight against invaders.

Desert Gnolls
Martial tribes of up to 100, the Gnolls have been hired by evil Genii as “muscle” to protect their towns and enforce their rules. Patrols of Gnoll are found in Genii towns and their crude encampments are located on the edges of towns. Gnolls worship a twin headed beast-god but their shamans have little power in the tribe. They dress in black robes and studded leather armour along with hoods and spiked polearms.

The artifacts
Hidden under the sea of sand are dungeons containing marvelous magical/high technological machines that once controlled the temperate climate of this area. Some of these artifacts still work and may provide magical spells for those who discover them, and defeat whatever monstrous inhabitants or guardians that remain.
The cults of the dead wish to destroy these wondrous items and plunge the remains of the world into a final death.

Jungle Dwarfs
The northern jungle is notorious for its slimes and giant wasps, a tribe of camouflage wearing dwarves have fought off these horrors and settled in a ruined temple on the edge of the desert.
Here they distill potions from rare plants and mushrooms that dot the terrible stinking jungle.
