I am going to start a game in FR at level 10. What I eventually would like to do is take the game epic with the players attempting to stop a literal Hell on earth by taking out the Lords of the Nine.

What are some good sourcebooks that I need to take a look at?

I would suggest:

#1: Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells
#2: Manual of the Planes
#3: Epic Level Handbook (optional)

Don't forget the Book of Vile Darkness if you want the Lord of the Nine to be extrememly nasty also MM 2-4 for other devils for the PC's to fight

My one worry is challenging them in epic.

If you're going to seriously challenge your players at epic level in the Nine Hells, don't use the stupid "aspects" of the Lords of the Nine. Use the BOVD and really challenge them. Make sure the devils mess with them as much as possible, constantly attacking and using intrigue and such to ruin the PC's reputation.

Remember, you have to get the point across that the devils have overwhelming numbers and are not gonna just sit back and wait for the PC's to attack.

And remember to play them with intelligence. Make sure their one step in front of the PC's at all times
