Still Carpenters

Group: Still Carpenters.
Recomended use: War setting.
Brief Description: A group of carpenters and other craftsman who use their skills in building and repairing to aid in the war effort of their kingdom.
Leader: Aaron Dizernan. (Level 9 Wizard)
Number of associates: About 70, mostly scatered around the landscape in groups of 5 to 20 members.

No one is sure why these men decided on using such a name. Some believe its due to the fact that in the early days of the war, many of them spent their time creating coffins for those fallen in battle. Many believe its due to the fact that the buildings that they create - from simple huts for refugees to sturdy wooden palisades - remain still and undamaged even after years of war. But the real reason is because these men, even with the loss of their loved ones, homes and lands, remain working on their beloved craft, and use their skills creating bridges, houses and protections for those that can or cant pay for their services.

By using their skills and magic, they do many jobs for the needy and the kingdom, working where they can to improve the situation and make the lives of those near them more confortable and safe. Their main activies are:

- Creating huts for refugees for free, so these have avaiable shelter and safe resting points. Also, huts are created in the outskirts of towns to shelter those that flee their lands looking for safer places.
- Creating bridges for the army and for logistical lines. Since their numbers arent very high, they act as architects and engeneers, using volunteers or soldiers to help on most of the work.
- Creating towers, palisades and wooden keeps, again working as architects or engeneers.
- Creating spear and arrow shafts, shields, wagons, carts, and siege weapons
- Repairing houses, keeps, walls, palisades, bridges and weapons.

Some in the group are spell users, using their spells mainly for building and repairing. If necessary, they may fight alongside soldiers and adventurers if the need arise, but their main objective is to give relief and help to those in need.

Possible Quests:
- The wood necessary for the charpenters and the war effort is angering the druids of the nearby forests.
- There is an enemy spy inside the group, and since they have such a important job in creating the defenses and protections of the country, he must be found as soon as possible.
- Someone is sabotaging the operations of the Still Carpenters and must be stoped at all costs.
- There is a wood shaping spell that is rumored to be hidden inside a ruin that would greatly help the efforts of the group, so Aaron Dizernan asks the group to help them find it.

Prince Trykus

One of several children of the hobgoblin emperor, Trykus (wizard 8) knows that with the current level of domestic unrest in his homeland, many nobles will try to take the throne once his father dies. Trykus plans for the winner to be himself. To do this, he travels the world with his elite unit of hobgoblin warriors and spellcasters (mostly warmages) to unearth several ancient artifacts sacred to Megublyet. If he succeeds, he will win enough popularity among his people to seize the throne, and usher in a new era of hobgoblin wizardry...which would be very dangerous for all their neighbors.

I like the Prince Trykus idea. It's slightly cliche, but if done well, it could be a long, interesting adventure.

The website I usually use to post random deities, characters, organizations, etc. is www.eruvian.com, but there may be other sites with similar opportunities. I just find it's easier to keep things organized and search for what you want on a website as opposed to a forum.

In Progress (Incomplete)

CN
Common worshippers include Barbarians, Fighters, Mercenaries and Rangers
Favoured Weapon: Greataxe
Domains: Chaos, War, Strength, Destruction
Info: Narok is the chaotic god of battle. He preaches that to die gloriously in battle is the greatest honour a man can achieve in his lifetime. His clerics are always striving to find more challenging foes to defeat to proove their worthiness to the rest of the clergy. A common saying amongst the church of Narok is "It is better to kill one giant than it is to slay a thousand goblins". Naroks followers often hire themselves out as mercenaries and they relish wish joy at the sight of battle. They are amongst the bravest and more talented soldiers an army can hope for.

LN
Common worshippers include Fighters, Mercenaries, Rangers, Generals and Soldiers
Favoured Weapon: Halberd
Domains: Law, War, Knowledge, Protection
Info: Arius is the lawful god of battle and strategy. He is disgusted at Narok and his savage barbarians charging madly into battle. Arius believes the best course of action is a good plan and teamwork. Generals enjoy hiring Arius' followers as mercenaries because they are very well diciplined and well versed in the strategy and art of battle. Sometimes however, a cleric of Arius may believe he has greater tactical knowledge of the situation than his commanding general and decide to take charge.

LE
Common worshipers include fighters, warlords and tyrants
Favoured Weapon: Greatsword
Domains: Law, Evil, War, Strength
Info: Karnak is the god of tyrants and pride. His clergy believe that to gain power, one must constantly prove he is better than those weaker than himself. Very similar to the italian prince machiavelli, Karnak believes that good is for the naive and that evil is the only true way to gain power.

LG
Common worshippers include paladins, fighters, rangers, warriors, crusaders
Favoured Weapon: Bastard Sword
Domains: Law, Good, War, Strength
Info: Austriel is the godess of crusading. She teaches that evil will not go away by ignoring it or by simply asking others to get rid of it. You must destroy evil yourself. She teaches that it is important to "take the fight to evil, before they take the fight to you". Her followers often lead crusades into orc territories or tyrannical kingdoms.

1st Level Fighter Human – Deputy

Although they refuse to admit it the duo is very much in love and one would gladly give their life for the other. Steel City (Size Village)
Adult Population 709
Non Adult 142
Most expensive item 200gp
Government: Conventional (High Commander)
Alignment: Lawful Evil

Steel City is a small mining village that was once a thriving multicultural place of trade. The only problem with Steel City then was the frequent raids by the monstrous humanoids in the forest to the east and from the plains to the south and west of it. Steel City built up a large militia trained by a powerful warrior who defended the city. This fighter began to see himself as the only man who could protect Steel City he performed a military coup on the towns multi-racial council. By turning the human population against the non humans he cemented his power leaving the city to eat itself on fear. Now he rules as high commander with his dreaded Dark Guard and the Secret Police. Being a non-human in steel city isn’t any fun but to attempt to flee or to break the law means certain death.

High Commander

Formerly the leader of the militia of Steel City he has dubbed himself high commander and rules with an iron fist over this small mining town. What raw material the town does not sell he has made into the finest weapons and armor for his Dark Guard.

15th Level (warrior type) Human – Despot Who Took over a mining town

Commanders Inner Circle

The commander’s inner circle advises him on all the things that go on in Steel City. His former second din command and now leader of the Dark Guard informs him about military things, the leader of the secret police and Elvish Rouge give him all the latest intelligence and the priest of the Dark God of might and power that makes sure that their god is pleased lest the city fall.

7th Level Fighter Human – Commander of the Dark Guard/Underling of High Commander (See Also Dark Guard)
6th Level Rouge Elf – Spy Master (See Also Secret Police)
4th Level Cleric Human – High Priest of a dark god

Commanders Wizards

The commander has two wizards in his employ neither of them are particularly powerful but the high commander knows powerful wizards are often difficult to control.

2nd Level Wizard Human – Diviner
1st Level Wizard Human – Evoker

Dark Guard

The Dark Guard is the cities defensive force and the high commanders own private army. The Guard is led by the high commanders former second in command and is comprised of almost entirely humans, except for one elf who is their archery trainer. The dark guard is almost instantly recognizable by the horrific looking black armor they wear, used to instill a sense of dread in all who see it.

7th Level Fighter Human – Commander of the Dark Guard/Underling of High Commander (See Also Inner Circle)
3rd Level Fighter Human – Arms Master
3rd Level Fighter Elf – Archery Master
2nd Level Ranger Human – Tracker
Two 2nd Level Clerics Human – Divine Support
Three First Level Clerics Human - Healers
Three 1st Level Fighters Human – Elite Troopers
Two 2nd Level Warriors Human – Captains
Twenty-Five Warriors Human - Troopers

Secret Police

The high commander knows that not all things can be routed out through sheer force. To that end he has formed the secret police. No one has ever seen the secret police as they do their job very well, but anyone could be a member or an informant for the secret police. Although the city itself is less then tolerant of non-humans the secret police’s leader as well as a few of its members are Elves and Dwarves.

6th Level Rouge Elf – Spy Master (See Also Inner Circle)
3rd Level Rouge Human - Assassin
3rd Level Rouge Elf – Non-Human Infiltrator
Three 1st Level Rouges – One Dwarf, One Elf, One Human
1st Level Ranger Human - Tracker

Police Force

The dark guard and the secret police do not actually have time to be the police force of steel city. Steel City has its own sheriff who answers to the head of the dark guard and gets his information that way, most information originally coming from the secret police. To work in the slums the police force has a Dwarven deputy, two other Dwarven cops and two Elven cops. For the most part these non-humans working for the police force are seen as traitors to their people.

1st Level Fighter Human – Sheriff
1st Level Ranger Human – Tracker
1st Level Cleric Human – Healer/Interrogator
2nd Level Warrior Dwarf – Deputy
Eight 1st Level Warriors – Two Elves, Two Dwarves, Four Humans

Upper Class

When the high commander took over Steel City one of the ways of getting the humans to believe they were superior to the non-humans was by helping create a human upper class comprised of the top local merchants and commodities barons. These new Aristocrats now live lives of luxury off the backs of the working class, which helps to foment unrest in the city making an outright revolt unlikely as the citizens battle themselves.

3rd Level Aristocrat Human
Seven 1st Level Aristocrats Human

The Underground

There is an underground in the city working to make life a little easier for the non-human and even lower class humans that toil every day. Surprisingly there are no Dwarves in the under ground even as they seem to toil the most in the mines. The underground is formed by two diametrically opposed groups a gnomish bard and his lust for freedom whose chaotic mindset is the opposite of the human monk who is the other leader of the group. The monk seeks to bring a meaning back to the law not just the letter but the spirit. Both men have good hearts and that seems to be what allows the group to be so cohesive.

3rd Level Bard Gnome
3rd Level Monk Human
1st Level Rouge Halfling
1st Level Wizard Gnome
Two 1st Level Bards – One Human, One Half-Elf
Two 1st Level Monks – One Human, One Elf

Small town
Population previously 304

A isolated village of stone buildings located deep in a wooded valley is known for its stone masons and the sprawling graveyard attached to it.Recently, bad news has come from the village, dead have risen from their graves and attacked anyone attempting to leave the village.

Its previous rulers, a clan of bandits grew wealthy raiding travelers and had magnificent tombs created (attracting many fine stone masons in the process). If the rumors are true, the evil clan has collected enough magic knowledge in their raids to return from the grave!

Wonderful example of the basic information that a DM would need to know about a building in a given location. I like the fact that you have left some of the details open for individual DM's to come up with on their own. IMHO the only addition I would add would be the size of the building in S.S. "Stonghold Spaces/Squares" "Don't have Stronghold Builders Guidebook in front of me"

I think the following template would work for recording enough facts about the location that the basic feal of the structure is convayed however the physical details are left open for individual DMs to fill in as they invision them to be.

Sample Template for buildings

The Invert Tower

This building was constructed over three hundred years ago by a collaboration of liches. Rather than a traditional tower, though, only one story of this building is above the ground. The rest of the structure is completely underground. Much of the building seems to be made of or decorated with obsidian and black granite. The many years of necromantic magic seem to have "discouraged" natural life in the area, now devoid of plant life and animals.

The Invert Tower is frequently set upon by paladins and good-aligned clerics who seek to "purify" it, so many defensive measures have been taken to protect the tower, traps being the most abundant. Some "guard monsters" have also been employed/enthralled.

If liches are a little too tough for your players, you can just make them into multiple generations of evil wizards instead...

Sorry if it's a bit cliched, thought it up on the spot.

The Knights of the Silver Moon

A knight order created when the elves were at their climax to protect the unprotected. It's members cannot be anything but pure elves.
There are about 100 knights of the silver moon. They dont usually scatter much. They are easily recognized by their silver armor.
The whole order is leaded from he Castle of Freedom. A castle once used by barbarians and (yuck) humans, it was cleansed and renovated for the order to use.
They have been known to fight alongside the forces of good, but they have been harshly criticized for staying neutral through numerous conflicts.
They are led by a knight king, this knight king is chosen by an elder dragon after every death of a past king. This dragon is sought by the bravest of the order and they must be the ones to ask him and bring the answer to the castle.

The Red Myst
S.S.: 8200
Owner: Dorian Bladesinger (level 8 swashbuckler/lvl 10 dread pirate)

The Red Myst is the outcome of many years of pirating and hoarding, Dorian was born on a pirate ship, lived on a pirate ship and now owns the best pirate ship. This ship is 1200 by 200. It can hold a near unlimited amount of swag, and has a fighting crew of 27500 men. To top this all off, Dorian maximized it's efficiency by enchanting the entire vessel to fly and adding 10 inches of adamantine plating around the hull. The upper deck of the ship is replaced by massive flying dry docks, which houses his 400 flying sailing ships.

His fleet ramains over the ocean, anchored to a secret island. It is rumored that the island is actually the same island as the port city of Burnauk, which has grown drastically within the past few years.

(The port city is his hiding place, and he operates a thriving merchant sailing buisness, which is known for it's uncanny speed.)

Well actually Ive used alot of these ideas for my own campaign.
