| KingGolem04-12-07, 09:55 PM | Greetings, threadpersons. I am currently working on my campaign setting, Konerswel, and to start I am working on the map. Now, I have been working on this map for a long time, and what's keeping me from working fast enough is that I can't come up with good names for the various regions of the world. If anyone on this board can come up with a somewhat original name and post it (prefferably with a brief description of the region's concept) here, I would really appreciate it. I must warn you though, this map was so large that I had to split it up into 9 sections that fit together as follows: 123 456 789 http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map1.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map2.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map3.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map4.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map5.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map6.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map7.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map8.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r23/KingGolem/Map9.jpg |
| Darth Syntax04-13-07, 02:43 AM | I must say, that is a prodigious amount of work you've done with those maps! However you seem to have things already named so I am slighly unclear as to what you are looking for. |
| GoriceXII04-13-07, 07:58 AM | Hm...I quite like them too. They are colorful and nice to look at but also easy to read. I'm also slightly unsure as to what you need from us. Do you want us to suggest how to name the areas in question as numbered one through nine, seas, channels, what? |
| yellowdingo04-13-07, 09:02 AM | They are interesting maps. The regions? are detailed (I assume hammerhiem is a region rather than a kingdom?). If its Kingdoms and capitals I suggest that the river flowing east from Hammerhiem flows into the sea straddled by: Ironwheel: Two Huge stone/brick Citadels (one on each cliff face facing the other across the ravine like river linked by multilevel walk bridges). The river drops into the sea over a waterfall (driving a huge iron waterwheel) into the Sea. The Ocean fifty feet below that uncercuts the cliffs on each side where an ocean level port with docks is located (comming and going) behind the falls. The Wheel is designed to pump air into the Aquaduct that is being dug to secretly link the inland communities. so that they will have control of all water. No more surface rivers. Iron Wheel is a massive metropollitan trade port populated by Dwarves, gnomes, assorted merchants of many friendly races. Dwarf Barges currently travel the river bringing minerals down and taking resources up the river. There is no overland travel. |
| KingGolem04-13-07, 05:45 PM | Ok, allow me to clarify. The regions are both nations and territories. I wanted to set up the regions somewhat like in World of Warcraft (unrealistic as it may be), where even though there is the same terrain, there are somewhat clearly defined regions in the world. Some of the areas are nations, and some are territories that are claimed by, disputed over, or uninhabited by the nations. For example, Hammerheim (kingdom of the dwarves :D ) is bordered to the North by the Schmiedeschutz Hills (note: Schmiedeschutz is German for "forge guard," which is accurate, seeing as how it borders Hammerheim) which is a barely inhabited region. A few dwarven military towns are set up in the southern Schmiedschutz hills to protect the dwarven homeland from squads of ogre mage pillagers. So you see, the Schmiedschutz hills are not part of the dwarven kingdom, but a separate, sparsely inhabited wild region. But anyway, what I need help with is coming up with names (and concepts) for regions like the Schmiedeschutz hills described above. If someone comes up with an idea and a name for a region, I would like if you would post it. For you see, all of the bordered areas on the map are regions which I have not named. Two more details; yes, I know I need to add lakes and rivers, and I am totally incorporating that dwarven city of Ironwheel into the kingdom of Hammerheim :) |
| yellowdingo04-14-07, 04:53 AM | World Building Tip: A bunch of triangles put together like a d20 polyhedron serves as the planetary globe. Draw your maps in the triangles. Each triangle side is about 4000 miles. I use this on my own world building. It allows you to lay out the continents. Lots of Game Designers have resorted to other world shapes (like flat discs simply because they they couldnt work how to slap a map on a globe... |
| KingGolem04-14-07, 08:30 AM | The d20 shaped world map seems like a good idea, but right now I need help naming the regions on the map. You know, the bordered areas of land with no name in them? Once I get all the regions named I might do that. |
| KingGolem04-14-07, 01:46 PM | Ok...nobody is posting. :weep: If nobody is going to help with the regions than could they at least tell me what's wrong with the thread? |

| yellowdingo04-14-07, 09:15 PM | Ironwheel (Revisited) Ironwheel sits on the Sungaimas <Rivergold>. There are many mines and Quarries (abandoned and active) along the rivers-edge which are serviced by barge traffic. |
| KingGolem04-14-07, 10:40 PM | English to Indonesian? Very interesting, thank you. :) Though the English to Indonesian will be useful in the future (when I make color maps of the regions and nations themselves), recently, in a thread nearly identical to this one (on a different forum on a different website) someone directed me to a random letter sequence generator, which I will probably link from my sig. I have been using it to help me create names for the regions and have already made great progress. However, that doesn't mean that I'm still not accepting help with this project, and I would still appreciate it if someone were to post names (or resources for making names, like yellowdingo did). |
| Araes04-15-07, 08:14 PM | Honestly, if I'm not feeling creative I usually just go and do a search for: Random Name Generators (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=place+name+generator&btnG=Google+Search) Then you end up with a decent number of good results from online folks. Personal favorites include: NineFrenchBoys (http://nine.frenchboys.net/) (Tons of random generators) Seventh Sanctum (http://www.seventhsanctum.com/index-name.php) (More random generators) Gamewyrd Generator (http://www.gamewyrd.com/archives/name.php) (Tends to have high degree of randomness) My Generator (http://araesmojo.googlepages.com/RandomNameGenerator.html) (Places and people from decomposing word roots) |
| Sotha_syl07-11-07, 03:25 AM | Can't see anything at all... wonder if it still works out, or if firefox/opera just cant show it or what. I'd very much like to see these fabled and mysterious maps. :D |
| sdragon198407-12-07, 01:18 PM | I can't see anything either, so I think it's Firefox. Random name generators are great, but they do tend to lack any sense of entymology(sp?). I think you've got a great start by looking at foreign languages, though. By the way, that name deconstructer gave Lala as an elven name.... |
| Aneutralshadeofblack07-12-07, 04:08 PM | It's not Firefox. What browser you use has little incidence on whether or not you can see images. The OP's links are simply broken. |
