| WandMage09-14-07, 12:53 PM | I am DMing for a group of 5 players in Forgotten Realms that have actually managed to get their evil characters to lvl 33 and they are still climbing. The story line has found them starting their own trading company, and they have gone to investigate a town where their caravans have gone missing. (Money is a great evil campaign motivator.) Upon arriving at the town, they find the town population slaughtered by demons, and by half fiendish shadow creatures. Shar has opened a portal to the plane of shadow and is planning on using this "rest stop" of a city to serve as a foot hold into the world for her shadow army. I am not looking for a critique on the campaign, but I needed you to have this info for what I need help with. Under the city is an ancient netheresse city in ruins. The demons have come up from the ruins into the sewers of the city, and the PCs have found that they need to close this portal forged by a godess. What I need is help with ideas for the ruins that the portal is placed in. Traps, strategic layouts, things like that. Please Help! |

Conceivably the Goddess was the old city's Patron, so perhaps the layout is her holysymbol...if this was a city in Greyhawk and the god was Tharizdun, then the entire complex would be a spiral toward the center with a narrow, 10' wide street spiralling toward the central temple. Try a leaf pattern of street arteries...all coming through a single access gate and fanning off into narrower lanes. All the buildings are 20'x20', roof accessed, with no spaces seperating them except at streets and alleys - that way they must break through wall after wall, excavate out collapsed areas, do something realy hard...that wears them down so that they are vulnerable in the final confrontation. A 10% chance of a collapse (+40% if a fight occurs, +90% if area effect magic is used). They might breach a wall into the next house and find Demons moving through it or perhaps they have a narrow well which they can come and go as they please... |

So there's a hill/mountain on top, and what was once the highest spire is now the deepest room. Perhaps there's a space beneath the upside-down city, caused by a protective shield so when you look out of the city you just see this endless pitch-black cavern. (see diagram).
