Well, I threw together an invisionfree for us.

http://s11.invisionfree.com/Feybook

It's not spectacular, but it should get the job done.

---

I was thinking of starting a project to put together a free homebrew book for Fey-related material (perhaps in a format similar to Races of -). First, though, I want to see if there's enough interest for it. Does anyone think they'd be intrigued enough to contribute? I'd be willing to both manage and contribute writing, though I do would need someone else to compile a PDF (I don't have the program). We would include some old races, some new ones, monsters, feats, prestige/base classes, spells, powers, invocations, etc. The whole shabang. Hopefully it will be balanced, interesting, and professional enough for regular use. We would update it and take suggestions once released until a final version is uploaded.

We'd need a sizable creative team, as well as someone who can compile the PDF and secure (or make) visuals. I want this to be legal and legit. A real contribution to the game.

I would encourage it and contribute the occasional idea but I can't promise constant involvement at the moment. However I would encourage others who do have time to get involved, this would be something I'd actually like to see on the shelves.

I am interested but for reasons listed here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=13223473&postcount=11) my contributions might not be the quality expected.
Are you looking for presentable, finalized material, or just anything in text? Raw ideas or completely statted classes/races?

Hmm...
I would be vaguely interested...
However, I haven't really done anything like this before...
So I don't know how helpful I would be...

Contributions could be as small as a shared idea to a typo correction. It's an open group project.

However, it does seem that there's already a sizable user-made fey book... should we still make it, or perhaps give it a shift of theme?

From the review I've read on the Green Ronin fey book, it's not what most think.
Other gamers have told me same when I informed them I write fey material, they say "Green Ronin has one all ready.."

Well, it's also small, vague, and incomplete, and I feel we can do better. Just might take longer, that's all. So even though 'there is one' we can provide all original stuff yet still.

Where will this project take place?
AnonymousInternets

07-28-07, 07:22 PM
If we were to do it on a separate forum, I could host an invisionfree or get a friend to hook us up with something on his domain.

I want the project to be relatively open, but still strive for a quality presentation. Anyone can contribute an idea, but it will probably be rewritten, critiqued, and edited before it's actually considered for the final product.

My monster making skills have been complimented numerous times, and I've always felt that the fey need some more oomf to them.

Count me in.

I am not too interested in the rules bits, but could maybe offer some ways of presenting the fey in game. Or something like that.

Invisionfree is free forum hosting. The domain would be something like s14.invisionfree.com/name and there would be some google text ads on the top of the page (no popups or flashers or anything) below the header.

Everyone offering help:
You don't have to be a fantastic writer or rules lawyer to participate. You can contribute anything you want, and the rest of us will be able to review it and tweak it until it's just right.

Actually, a friend I know has a small RPG wiki set up.

We could either use that or ask for our own, perhaps...?

Yes! I'm definitely in :D. I have the Green Ronin book and love it, but there's plenty of room for more stuff. The fey deserve far better than WotC gave 'em.

My specialty is creatures, but I'm also capable of making races, classes, PrCs, feats, spells and fluff text.

OK so far I have a novelette-worth of Fey material, everything from life cycle to history to Seelie/Unseelie clans, and a list of most monsters that are good feytouched or "should be fey but aren't".
Just need a place to put it. Either here in WOTC forums, probably Races or Monsters section (leaning more to Races) or over in The Gaming Den where the population is small but feedback is higher quality.

I perused that rpgwiki site and it looks a bit barren.... Maybe we should use dandwiki instead. It's more diverse than just campaigns, and also free; I have a classless system set up there, and the moderators are very kind and very helpful.

Just give the word to me when we're good to get this project started and everyone will have to set up accounts there. Once this task is complete you are free to then edit any page on the subject deemed "public", but learning the wiki code may or may not be the hardest part.
I have a lot of trouble formatting HTML into tables but they have experts willing to help.

Here's the wiki: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
And here's an example, my draft of the classless system (on pause while I write more material and attempt to gather feedback): http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/D20_twilight

You can put on wikis whatever you want on them, and they're pretty much always free...
The wiki or invisionfree or whatever we go with was supposed to be to work on the project, not to showcase it. :0 The final product will be compiled into a PDF anyways. We could have a wiki version as well, but it's important that we have a copy that you can have in 1 printable file that doesn't require internet access.

If we're really doing this (I've seen a number of these "let's do something cool" ideas that fizzled out), then we need organization. I recommend we break our goal-product into sections, and assign each section to a moderator/administrator/whateverator. We can all pick at each others stuff, but we need some sort of coherence here.

I propose the following divisions:

The History of the Fey: Where the fey came from and what they are, in RL folklore.
Fey Races: PC-quality races, either fey or associated with the fey.
Classes: Fey-aligned core classes and PrCs
Crunchy Bits: Feats, skills, whatever.
Fey Magic: Spells and suchlike
Creatures: New "monster" fey and creatures associated with them.
Material Matters: Equipment, magic items, and special materials. Possibly expand upon the whole "cold iron" thing.
Using the Fey: The many way fey can be used in a D&D game, along with advice and suggestions on specific things.

Also, someone is probably going to have to shell out for the OGL. "Open" doesn't mean "Free," and we are trying to put together a product here, even if it's a free product.

We could always use Plotstorming.com's synergy offer (http://www.plotstorming.com/forum/index.php?topic=111.msg807#msg807). It might also recruit a few more participants who are willing to contribute fiction, at least.

*nods* Yes, organization is indeed key. When we start the project, there will be managers appointed, and we will be following deadlines.

As for the OGL, I don't think we have to pay anything if our product is free, though I could be wrong. :0 I'll look into it.

As for the OGL, I don't think we have to pay anything if our product is free, though I could be wrong. :0 I'll look into it.To my knowledge, OGL is free. As long as there is no mention of D&D, illithids, Vecna, or any other trademarked material (or product identity, which seems to be the official term). Also, as long as there is no non-OGL material copied from elsewhere.

I'd vote for a forum, just because I'm not very familiar with wikis. If everyone else wants a wiki, though, I'm a fast learner :)

Is that so.

By the way I am not pulling this 'out of my ass', it's years of mythology studies, New Age mysticism, half a lifetime of D&D house rules and settings, and Brian Froud (Labyrinth, anyone?)

When the Fey Racial Class substiture for Fey Hit Dice goes up, I believe many will enjoy the flexibility of making your own Fey complete with roles, body types, sizes, and spell abilities. Making the Fey feats has mostly been by gerimandering and fiat, but if we can get some solid crunch and rules balance then anyone could make their own.

Also just so yall know, my Fey background material and setting info can be subject to change, which means any comments and advice can influence me to go one way or another. It's not set in stone.
So, get your stuff out there, either in the site we have this project or on my "Fey by Sig" thread posted above!

As for forum vs. wiki, I actually prefer forum too. Ironic, no?
The wiki was recommended just cuz anyone can edit it, and the mods there are so helpful, but if we can get that same quality in a forum then it will be easier.

EDIT: ah OK posting the racial class and feats was easier than expected, no formatting lost.

here it is, THE CRUNCH!!! : http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=13257302&postcount=12 (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=13257302&postcount=12)

Okay...just checked my Bestiary, and I've got around 45 fey or fey-associated creatures...30-something completely statted up and ready to go, the others in progress.

I know there's a ton of cool fey posted by various people in Monster's Lair (much probably archived by now).

I've also got a few fey-themed PrCs.

So, I guess I need to get busy posting these guys (again, in some cases) for y'all to review. And also reading Sigma's cool fluff & crunch.

BTW...oops. I found out my fey book isn't Green Ronin; it's Goodman Games's Complete Guide to Fey. It is truly cool.

1) are you going to consider Elves as Fey? because, well, they should be...

2) i started a DnD world based on magical fey fighting psychic goblinoids - then, as usual, decided it would be easier in another gaming system. if it's a group project, however, it would be worth it.

"one continent, arctic to equatorial, elves and fey in the temperate to north zone, goblins south of that. here, the fey have magic and the goblins have psionics. it's not 100% good vs. evil - there are evil unseelie and good abgoblins. in this world, when an elf mates with a goblin, you get a human. humans, halfling and (playable) ogres are the bastard races. the "humanoids" have a small, isolated kingdom, which houses refugee population of other races (not dwarves, maybe lizardmen and birdmen, or something like that). the temperate zone has minor wastelands and mountains for separation.

the humanoids can do magic and psionics, and are tolerated as a trade portal, but they are are gaining in power and technology, and will likely be crushed soon.

the fey and goblin lands are not homogeneous - there are cultures, kingdoms, whole domains adapted to different climates. they are monolithic and unchanging. goblins should also be immortal, here."

OK... wow. That's quite a nice selection there. I'd comment on all of em but hopefully you get the idea! "Horned Hunter" is my fav but the Menhir would work well in any Fey or mortal setting dealing with Fey... very Gaelic.
This is the kind of work I like to provide a stage for, where you have the actors and I made the setting >_<

1) are you going to consider Elves as Fey? because, well, they should be...

They are in my works. I even provided feats for Fey or other characters to become of the Elf subtype and progress in a small selection of abilities.
I wrote out that Elves are descendant from evolved Sprites and smaller humanoid Fey in imitation of mortal humanoids, but also that non-Fey Elves became remotely part mortal humanoid in order to adapt -_-;
Blasphemy? Creative? Who knows, hope I don't get flamed by fellow elf fans.

the fey and goblin lands are not homogeneous - there are cultures, kingdoms, whole domains adapted to different climates. they are monolithic and unchanging. goblins should also be immortal, here."

All Fey are immortal as long as they are within Fey realms in the setting I made. Once outside of Fey realms they must resist slowly losing certain Fey properties and getting both CON and CHA -2, but still live a damned long time (PHB elf years)

Nice to see the juices flowing already. =] I'll try to get the forum up soon.

Note to setting-based writers: this book needs to be compatible with standard D&D. You can add your own flavor and setting information, but if it deviates too much from standard 3.5 we may need to label that section as specifically 'alternative.'

Noted. I made (and still work on) a classless point system for d20 but specifically did NOT use it for the Fey works.
I left D&D rules intact, even introducing the Fey racial class as an optional replacement for Fey Hit Dice, and although not required although I really recommend using it!
Certain aspects of my setting such as the Fey life cycle from larval sprite to sprite to other types such as goblinoid or elfin can be worked around without using the Fey racial class; it's easy and simply requires DM fiat, I feel such a campaign loses many of the nice options we can provide for custom Fey.

I agree that, at the least, we should devote some space to an "elves as fey" option. And I say this as an elf fan.

Sounds cool...but as AnonymousInternets said, this isn't a setting-specific book. I could, however, see this fleshed out as an alternate, fey-heavy setting idea in the book.

Well I've saved them all and reading them in closer detail, then I'll comment on anything that needs improving (the Menhir, for instance.. might want to slim the spell list?)
And will do! haha
There's reference to one of your creations in my "Fey by Sig", see if you can find it.
No, it's not the horned guy, I dreamt that up months ago. Never got around to DMing a game with that scenario in it, so I slapped it out as a story.
But the other one.. well... you might like it.
I can do crunch too, it's just rushed, sup-par quality, and shoddy looks (I prefer my own notation over the complex and space filling traditional methods) so I prefer not to torture many people or waste my time better spent writing different stuff.

And I don't think this is a "commercial site" in that sense.

Faerie Creature:
“Faerie creature” is a template that can be added to any animal, magical beast, plant or vermin (referred to hereafter as the “base creature”). A faerie creature’s type changes to “fey”, and uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Appearance: As a rule, fey versions of creatures are usually highly attractive or remarkable members of their species. Fey elks, for example, will be large and powerfully built, with enormous, opalescent antlers and sapphire eyes. Fey birds will have incredibly vibrant, almost crystalline plumage, and sing complex songs with rich melodies and harmonies. Even fey insects tend to look more like animated jewelry than lowly vermin. Often, a faerie creature will have unusual colors or features for its species, such as a bright red or pale green deer, or an unusually large (or small) bird. Once dead, most fey creatures rapidly revert to the more mundane, pedestrian appearance of mortal members of their species.

Faerie creatures live quite a long time. Generally, double the creature’s normal life-span, or add an additional +20 years, whichever would be greater. Faerie creatures that live in Faerie itself slow these extended life-spans down by a factor of 10. Unlike mortals that spend a long time in Faerie, these creatures do not have to fear their true age “catching up” with them if they leave the realm of Faerie.

Faerie creatures are more intelligent than their mundane cousins. Most notably, faerie animals and vermin can possess an ability to reason that is truly astounding. In certain regions of Faerie, animals have achieved full sentience, and have started communities and societies. Such communities are often multi-species. At least one colony of bees and one colony of ants in Faerie have achieved sentience, and both send emissaries to the ruling Fey Court. The oldest trees of the forests are quite intelligent, and frequently will speak with other living creatures…if that creature has a great deal of patience. Like many extremely long-lived beings, elder faerie trees are in no hurry to move a conversation along.

Hit Dice: changes to d6

AC: gain a +1 to natural armor per 5 Hit Dice (this bonus does not apply against cold-iron weapons)

Special Qualities:
▸ Anti-Magic Susceptibility: Loses template while in an anti-magic zone, but may attempt a spell resistance roll. As long as the roll succeeds (attempted each round), the creature keeps the template, but acts as staggered. Once the SR roll fails, the creature only regains the template by leaving the zone.
▸ Wild Magic Susceptibility: Alignment changes to Chaotic while in a wild magic zone, and creature acts as if under the effects of a confusion spell. It can resist the confusion effect with a successful spell resistance roll. As long as the roll succeeds (attempted each round), the creature acts normally. Once the SR roll fails, the creature only loses the confusion effect (and regain its original alignment) by leaving the zone.
▸ Low-Light Vision (creatures that already have Low-Light Vision gain no other benefit)
▸ Damage Reduction: see table
▸ Spell Resistance: Equal to the creature’s HD + 8 vs arcane magic, and HD + 4 vs divine magic.
▸ All faerie creatures understand and speak Sylvan. If they have an INT of 6 or higher, they may also understand Common (DM’s discretion). The ability to speak is a Supernatural ability if the base creature is physically incapable of reproducing human speech.
▸ Faerie plants gain tremorsense to a range equal to 10' per Hit Die, as well as the ability to see (including Low-Light Vision) and hear. Few faerie plants can move beyond the spot where they are rooted.
▸ Saving Throw Bonus: Fey are very hard to fool with illusions. Fey may attempt a saving throw to disbelieve an illusion it sees even if it has not interacted with the effect, in the same manner as an elf may attempt to find secret doors merely by passing one. Furthermore, fey gain a bonus on such saving throws equal to half their HD.

Abilities: Chr +4, other abilities are the same as base creature, but Int is always at least 3, and frequently higher (DM’s discretion).

Skills: Gain (4 + Int modifier; minimum of 1) skill points per HD. Add the following to class skills: Bluff, Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Sense Motive, Spot and Survival, in addition to any class skills the base creature may already possess. Those creatures with class levels use their class skills in place of these skills.

HD DR Other
1 - 2 - +2 to all Will saves
3 - 6 2/cold-iron or magic +2 to Charisma
7 - 10 5/cold-iron or magic +2 to all Will saves (stacks)
11 - 14 10/cold-iron or magic fascinate
15 - 18 10/cold-iron +2 to Dexterity
19 + 15/cold-iron +2 to Charisma

Fascinate (Su): The faerie creature has the power to cause other, non-fey creatures to become fascinated with it. Normally, the power works continuously and unconsciously as a free action, and is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting ability. Each creature within 30’ that is able to see the faerie and able to pay attention to it can fall subject to this effect. The faerie must not be disguising its nature as a fey creature (with spells such as disguise self, alter self, invisibility, or even mundane disguises). The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents the ability from working.

Susceptible victims are allowed a Will saving throw, with a DC equal to 10 + ½ the faerie creature’s HD + Charisma modifier. If the saving throw succeeds, that subject is immune to that particular fey’s fascinate power for the next 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the affected creature stays still and quiet, staring at the faerie, taking no other action for as long as the fey is visible and behaves in a peaceful manner (1 hour maximum) and for an additional 1d3 rounds after the fey has left its line-of-sight.

While fascinated, a target takes a -4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Listen and Spot checks. Any potential threat, such as an ally of the fey approaching the fascinated creature, allows the target to make a new WILL saving throw. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a ranged weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect. This ability will not work on targets that have more hit dice than the faerie, nor any other fey with more than ½ the hit dice of the faerie creature.

Nice, malykoth!

I noticed you opted to have some Fey defenses as a natural armor bonus ignored by iron, rather than starting with DR 5/iron shared by more WOTC Fey. A promising alternative.

It seems this template is best suited for Fey in non-Fey planes or places. Was that the intent?

Well...
I out a post (basically copied yours, Sig ;)). I also posted at the House of the Harping Moneky, a myth/story/RPG site I frequent. And I've got that link in my sig. Unfortunately, I don't frequent very many RPG sites.
ENworld, anyone?

What's ENworld?
I'm not registered on any other RPG sites, really...

I put it in my signature, though I'm not too active with posting here. :0

Considering all the kinds of material we want to put into the book, I'm thinking that a topic in General D&D Discussion is warranted. Hm...

http://www.enworld.org/

It's a D&D site that I pop in very occasionally. I've seen numerous references to it, though, and from what I have seen the do good stuff.

Unfortunately, I've posted there about 3 times, so I don't know that a call from me would have much effect.

I did ENWorld for a while. It sucks. Like, The Gaming Den without talent, or Wizards without diversity. Just opinions everywhere. Don't bother -_-

There is also rpg.net (http://www.rpg.net), RPGsite (http://www.therpgsite.com), Campaign Builders' Guild (http://www.thecbg.org) and PlotStorming (http://www.plotstorming.com).

If you want to go promoting the project, those might be decent places to start at.

Hi!

I would like to help with your project. This week I wont have much time to contrubute because I have to work and have to go to lowlands.

Here is a fey I am working on at the moment:(It has to be reworded)

Orchita
Small Fey
Hit Dice: 1d6-2 ( 1 hp)
Initiative: +5
Speed: 20 ft. (4 squares), Fly 30 ft. (6 squares).
Armor Class: 20 (+5 Dex, +4 Deflection,+1 Size), touch 15, flat-footed 11
Base Attack: +0
Attack: Dagger -1 melee (1d4-2/19–20)
Full Attack: Dagger -1 melee (1d4-2/19–20)
Space/Reach: 5 ft./5ft.
Special Attacks: Lullaby.
Special Qualities: Lovely Voice, Sweet Scent, Unearthly Grace.
Saves: Fort +2, Ref +11, Will +10
Abilities: Str 6, Dex 21, Con 6, Int 15, Wis 14, Cha 19
Skills: Knowledge (nature) 6, Diplomacy 8, Perform (sing, dance, oratory) 8, Sense Motive 6, Profession (dancer ) 6
Feats: Skill focus (perform [dance])
Environment: Temperate forests
Organization: Solitary, grove (3 - 5 orchitas).
Challenge Rating:
Treasure: Flowers
Alignment: Usually chaotic good
Advancement: By character class
Level Adjustment:

Before you you see little creatures of unearthly beauty, dancing with extraordinary grace on the leaves and flowers mesmerizing you. The air smells like ambrosia, and you feel sudden thrills when honey sweet voices fill the air. As you lay down on a bed of roses and crusty brown leaves your eyes close. You know you will dream pleasant tonight.

Orchitas are feminine feys that almost look like a flower. Their tiny feet come from their dress like petals. They colours of the petal can be any colour, but most are white, purple or azure. Their wings look like petals too, and their frail bodies are covered with a light green skin. A large stigma sticks from their back, where the sweet scent comes from.

Mesmerizing Voice (Su): The voices of Orchitas are honey sweet. They receive an +2 perfection bonus to perform (sing) skill checks.

Lullaby (Sp): The Orchitas can invoke magical powers just like bards with their voices. They can use the lullaby spell at will, and cast charm animal or person, blinding beauty, deep slumber and suggestion 3/day.

Sweet Scent (Ex): Orchitas are always surrounded by a cloud of beguiling perfume like substance. All creatures within 20 ft. of orchitas must make a will save (DC15) or be affected by the scent. The first round spend in the cloud gives a -2 penalty to attacks and will saves. The second round they must make a (DC16) will save or be affected as by the calm emotions spell. When for a third round in the scent of the orchitas the creature(s) must make a will save (DC17) or become charmed as by the charm monster spell. Every time the creature passes his safe, but stays in the cloud he takes a stacking penalty of 1 to his save against the sweet scent.

Unearthly Grace (Su): An Orchita adds her Charisma modifier as a bonus on all her saving throws, and as a deflection bonus to her Armor Class. (The statistics block already reflects these bonuses).

Anyway, I will post read the stuff posted in this topic and make some comments about it.

Tune out,
~*Nik

Hello all, I believe this is my first time posting on Wotc but a long-time lurker:plotting: LOL! I read this entire thread and checked out the links and have joined the Feybook forum as of now. I to have been waiting for some serious spotlighting on the Fey as a whole myself, and am in the process of writing a novela or twelve about a fantasy variant earth involving the Fey. I'd be happy to give some of my input of what I've been working on for my world setting to see if you like em, I myself love the work done reguarding the evoulution and background/lifecycle etc.

Though the majority of what I'll post'l be in the Feybook forum since Wotc is so labyrinthine as a whole:eek: !

Also, yes ENworld can be a pinch unorganized, but check out their homebrews section of the message boards, in particular the Creature Catalog http://www.enworld.org/cc/ which does have some good conversions of classic pre1st/2nd edition Fey creatures out there like the Uldra or Acteon!

Artist here! I'm interested in this, sample works are in the link below. PM me if you like my style.

Note: Some of my works are of mature content. No, they're not erotic. Just nude. Register yourself on deviantart and you can see them properly. I'm saying this because one of 'em is my best work (so far)
