I saw in the Dark Sun manual on www.athas.org they have how far you can travel in one day. I was wondering if anyone had this stat for traveling on boat and traveling on horse for D&D 3.5?

Reason I ask is I'm designing a 4th Edition setting and I know how far I want places to be in terms of time, but I'm not sure how far they are in terms of distance. So while I know a Marsh is 1 week away on boat and a city is 2 weeks away on horse, I don't know how much more far apart the city should be compared with the Marsh.

So I'm asking for the 3.5 Edition stats because I figure it won't be THAT different in 4th Edition :)

A character can walk 24 miles during one day, assuming a speed of 30, 8 hours of actual travel time and the use of roads, highways and other easy terrains.

Most parties, however, are slower than that, taking in account heavy armours or races with slow speed, usually 16 miles per day.

With a mount, it tipically averages at 32 miles per day.

Again, crossing trackless forests, marshes or mountains slows movement substantially.

My god... it means that I walk faster than PC... at least something I can do better... :)

I've tested myself with a heavy backpack for a 3 days walk (in forest trails), 8 hour walking and the other hours resting. Done 150 km in 3 days.

Just my 2 cents :P

Well, I suppose you were not forced to be on the lookout constantly for the sudden (and totally random) apparition of orcs, ogres, giants, dragons, and other nasties ;)

Also, I doubt your heavy backpack would be equivalent to a full plate armor's weight... Heavy backpacks is what adventurers carry on top of their armors.

Failing that, one can only guess that forests trails are in much better shape now and here that back then and there... What all those kings are doing with the tax money???? ;)

So you did ~30 miles/day, a little faster than 26 miles a day... Not a total shock, since backpacks are a lot better, plus as said above you aren't carrying everything else (armor, weapons, etc). And, as said, you weren't worried about being attacked (unless you were up in grizzly territory, but even then the risk is much lower). A party could 'rush' to move faster, but they might be fatigued if they get attacked

It depends on your setting, in my setting a "road" in most cases is just a dirt trail, but if you had a hard pack/paved road, travel would be faster. If you got a dwarf or gnome in your party, they'll be slowing you down as well.
