If you want the game to be about exploring your new world start them in a small hamlet in the middle of nowhere. Let them be the only few first level PC classes in the town and have them move slowly in through the world before getting swept up in a bigger plot. You can get your player's really being into where they are from and your world by having the hamlet's society be based off the types of characters they choose. If there are no Arcane Casters than the hamlet is distrustful of casters. If there are no Clerics or Paladins but you have a Ranger and a Druid than the place is in tune with nature. By letting your player's help dictate the world they grew up in and creating at least that one town together it will give them more of a feeling that they are a part of the world. |

Look on this site for the adventure downloads and you will find a number of starting adventures. That may be helpful, usually they can be placed anywhere in the D&D universe and then you might be able to come up with at least one starting adventure and therefore a starting location. |

Or if you don't really do that, either use disadvantages or just use a background device from a story you like. Also back the elves bad guys; that makes it fun:D |
