| Xexyz03-15-07, 03:52 PM | I'm in the midst of creating my game world, and am currently stuck because I have a map of the continent but now need to name the mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, and cities. I'm also creating the rulers of the countries on my continent, and I need names for them too. Does anyone have a name generator or can point me to one? |

| WilwarinAndamar03-22-07, 04:01 PM | Look at maps of actual countries and pick names at random. I needed names for two towns in our campaign because I was tired of referring to them as "that one village we saved" or "the Dwarven and Human settlement". I was at a loss until I watched a tv show about traveling around Italy. "That village" is now named Arola (it was Capri, but our DM knows someone by that name) and the settlement is Volterra. Perfectly plausible names in the D&D universe. Personally, I prefer Italian or French names because they sound prettier, but the other players also like German, Gaelic, Welsh, Anglo-Saxon, Japanese, and Spanish. :) |

| lordofthe_wog03-23-07, 01:19 AM | This (http://rinkworks.com/namegen/) one always works for me. At least, for people names. |

| krichaiushii03-23-07, 06:17 PM | I wasn't expecting the SPANISH NOMINATION...... Its two main weapons are surnames, settlement names, and river names. For fun, you might consider that the map you are using was drawn up in the language of the PCs' country. The same map in the Dwarvenholds will have different names for some (or all places), as will the maps drawn up by other races. Even maps by the same race drawn at different times, or even by different sides of a conflict may have different names. This latter can be seen in the American Civil War - which would you prefer, the Battle of Bull Run, or the Battle of Manassas? In fact, this racial naming of the same place/event can lead to more RPing moments, as PCs try to determine just where something happened (perhaps a journal-entry-as-map adventure) in relation to their understanding of the world. Just a sample... |
