Ideas on Running a Citywide Riot [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-04-07, 06:39 PM Background: A Lawful Good Kingdom is Hosting a meeting of other Kings (some of whom are Lawful Evil) and the Local populace (mostly good) begin a Protest Rally calling for an end of the membership of the Lawful Evil Kingdoms in the Larger Alliance.
After the assassination of one of the LE Delegates by some Protestors, there is a City-watch crackdown on the protestors...

Your Thoughts?

09-05-07, 07:06 AM Perhaps the protestors are falsely accused? Perhaps the lawful evil delegation wanted to be rid of the actual delegate in order to gain influence and eliminate a rival to someone else? Meanwhile there could be some legitimate grievances against the crown--perhaps a ruler is considered increasingly high handed, ignoring the rights of landowners and merchants. Tensions perhaps run high as the protestors hide the accused.

09-06-07, 03:11 PM My first thought is, who is the real power behind the political move to stage the protest and instigate the riot? Who would want the the assassination to take place and why? Personally I doubt the answer would be as simple as "the commoners were angry" and I would lean more towards "someone else is pulling the strings".

Once I answered those questions I would focus on what else that entity wanted to accomplish. Are there any other political targets the entity wants eliminated and/or harmed? Once I had that list I would plan events around those items.

Then I would assume that at some point the city watch would rally and reorganize. At that point they are the most potent threat to my goals. Distractions would be needed to keep them busy away from where my most important goals are.

Then plan about a dozen major occurrences that have nothing whatsoever to do with the core plot. Once a mob is whipped into a frenzy it is hard to control them. Fires, pillaging, plundering, destruction... Those all fit the bill nicely.
