I am currently occupied with the creation of a DnD setting based in the Wild West. The list of races and classes remains unchanged but all are re-flavoured. The Setting still has a fantasy element (magic, dragons, swords ect) but firearms are introduced.

Here are some ideas for the re-flavouring of the typical races and classes:

Humans: the main race, the pioneers
Elves: the natives, spiritual people with a connection to nature
Dwarves: gunmakers and traders
Halflings: the fortune-seekers
Orcs: the desperados of the setting, commiting robberies
Kobolds: the workers

Fighters: the typical gunslingers
Barbarians: native warriors empowered by nature
Clerics: the missionaries, trying to proselytize the native
Paladins: the sheriffs
Rogues: gamblers, fortune-seekers and thieves
Rangers: scouts and bounty-hunters
Wizards: miracle-makers and charlatans
Sorcerers: the 'heavy' artilerry
Druids: the native shamans
Monks: travellers from afar that bring a new way of battle
Bards: no idea... any suggestion?

Any opinions?

Trader: Bards would make good merchants, actually. Imagine a charismatic trader who is familiar with the cultures of various tribes ,and also comfortable in the settlements of the civilized folk. His bardic lore would include tribal customs. Probably doesn't play an instrment, but uses words and gestures to activate his bardic powers.

Medicine Man/Storyteller: Maybe the elves have storytellers who keep the tribal lore, heal the injured, fight evil spirits with sacred songs, etc. That could be done with the bard class, maybe with just a few tweaks[Divine Bard option from whichever 3.5 book it's in- Unearthed Arcana?].

Any plan to have more than one "old world" country fighting for the same territories? Like the French, Spanish and English? Take a look at the plot The Isabel Piece (http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/alex/Handbooks/WWWPlots/pl86.html), it might give you some ideas...

The roles you've come up with, Skio, are very interesting.

I'd be interested in seeing more of this setting, but outside of that, I can't offer much help.

I ran a Wild West campaign for a while. I made two core classes: the chemst and the engineer. Only the gunslingng engineer saw much use. Half-Elves were my tinkers of choice that developed these classes, and also steam engines, including steamboats and trains.

I have a 0-level adjustment shapeshifting race originally intended some amerindian characteristics. They fit nicely.

I used hold-out (one shot) pistols, revlves, hunting rifles, and shotguns. I have stats or all of thse and mybe some oter stuff if you are interested.

Consider Spirit Shamans, too. Complete Divine.

I had a lot of fun with this campaign. Watch some Westerns, and then watch some more. They are were all my story line ideas came from, and a lot of NPCs.

That's all I've got off the top of my head.

Good luck.

I too wish to run a Fantasy based Western setting. In fact HERE is my Thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=925399) that did not get too much help, mostly people telling me what I had just mentioned in the first post.

Also seriously I suggest Deadlands (D20 obviously), got western/horror/steampunk, and I'm sure you can easily look past the horror part. That is what I plan on using, and I see why not one could add fantasy races to it.

Also I like what you did with races, I personally wouldn't use elves, as they no longer live in forests, and living for 100+ years can get kinda weird with the west I'm sure. However you hit the Orcs role in the west dead on, just what I had predicted as well.

Of the fantasy and such, I don't know how far you're going with the fantasy part, but I think I will probably go more on the western modern side. One problem I myself would face with a wild west setting, is what do you plan for the PC's to do? Train saving/raiding, horseback shooting, shootout in a town, is all I really got for adventure ideas at the moment.

So good luck, and if you find the time, respond to my thread as well. Do ye need any help with anything else for your setting?
