The campaign i have built thus far was made in a hurry so the player's could use old characters from a winged campaign from about a year ago. these were good, solid characters with excellent stories and strong potential.
Right now, the world they're travelling in has an old western theme with archaic undertones (which is to say, swords and magic are more prominent then guns, although there are gunslingers. at least the NPC that travels with them is one.) They started the campaign becoming suddenly and abruptly aware that they aint in kansas no more, so to speak. Its been about a year and a half since the first two characters (Bok and Nadril, who ill explain in more detail later), travelled together, but they will be reuniting through this story (They would have met back together from the start, but Bok's player is at college). the story started in a seedy Tavern in the middle of an unknown badlands on an unknown plane. The characters were not the only denizens of the bar who were misplaced, as there were a variety of strange characters resting in this Inn/Tavern, ranging from an elven paladin/swashbuckler type chick, to a pair of druids who prefer to stay in the forms of a bear and a cat. There was also a single character from D20 modern, but they wouldnt know thats where she is from, just that she had an assault rifle beside her bed.
anyway though, the tavern is the "last bastion of normalcy to survive in the Badlands." according to the barkeep. The people who come here are lost in some way or fashion, be it in a philosophical sense of the term, or a more literal sense that they were wandering. whatever the case they deviated from a set path so far that they ended up zoning out and coming here. An endless eternity of arid desertland and a single road running north to south. their are twelve towns according to the Barkeep, six to the north, six to the south. Each one is undeniably corrupt, and the head honcho of each town holds a fetish item of sorts. If all twelve are gathered, supposedly it grants the fool strong enough or stupid enough to take on the task of collecting these items the ability to leave the blighted wastelands of the Badlands. But nobody knows if anyone's succeeded because nobody has ever come back to the Inn/Tavern after departing aside from the elf, who said she gave up halfway to the southern towns.
Obviously, the players want to leave, so they go a-travelling. The first town they went to is the first one to the north. Think of old western towns still, with the gritty, nasty surreal feel to them at dusk or dawn. their first opponent is a paelyrdaemon (not sure if i spelled that right, but the genderless devils that dress like courtesans) and it has convinced the town folk that it is a travelling soothsayer of a dogma similiar to the christian faith. she/it is a cult leader, and the entire town is under her thrall. I havent actually officially started them into the town, but they witnessed a "sermon" delivered by the devil-thing and they know that something isnt right in the state of denmark, if ya savvy.
Nadril is a lvl 7 Samurai(CW) Vampire, but is intending to change to a warblade once we get tome of battle(LE)
Bok is an immensely complicated Drunken Master/Monk/Souleater thing.(NE)
The Gunslinger is straight gunslinger, which is a homebrewed creation using necropolitan's gunslinger class as a basis.(N)
and the fourth player i havent really looked into yet because his character was a guest appearance and rather impromptu. he's making a new character though, and i'll have more on that.
I already know that the fetish items will gradually shift the scenery of the blasted wastelands, and after all of them are collected a new roadway will open for them to go to this big tower which will start to form in the distance after each item is collected. at the top of the tower is essentially the "big boss" of the campaign, an Evil Solar with some whacked out abilities.

I just need the in between stuff. any ideas are great.

Are the fetish items one of a kind? Are they based on the zodiac? Is there a villainous organization or just town bosses? What sort of monsters are there, perhaps a sphinx who plays the Riddle game or acts as a sage?RANDOM QUESTIONS.

The Fetishes are random, one of a kind objects, but as it stands now the Paelyrdaemon thing (i really need to grab my books) Fetish is A holy book made from the flesh of a true innocent (either a child or a virgin woman im saying now). The pages within are not from one book but from various different holy books. all the apocalypse stories of the different religions are collected into this book, obviously ill be taking liberties, as there is no definite outline for what those who believe in Pelor think to be the end of times, but in general the items will be mockeries of things most people hold sacred, important, or in high regards.
The town bosses work together in a loose confederation. They came to this world much the same way the heroes did, but because evil is far more ambitious then good by its very nature the town bosses struck out on their own and found these civilizations. They were given their fetishes by the evil Solar, and informed that although they could kill each other off and take their items away from one another like bickering children, trying to escape the Badlands, that ultimately they would have to come through him, and if he was strong enough to pull them into his dimensions and keep them there, they had best think twice about fighting each other. He promised them each a reward for service, which i havent really thought much into yet but i know it will essentially be offering a chance to become a god or archdevil at the very least in their own rights.
right now the bad guys i have set up in my mind are:
Spymaster paelyrdaemon
Mindflayer soulstealer
Vampire Lifedrinker/mastervampire/sorcerer
Green Dragon Elemental Master
Blackguard/assassin/ur-priest
Human Warlock/Gunslinger
Elven Druid/master of many forms/warshaper
Human Liche/wizard/archmage
Aasimar Were-monstrous scorpion (preferrably collosal)Favored soul/Warpriest
Possessed Great Wyrm Gold Dragon
human Cleric/Sorceror/mystic theurge(one of the strongest)
Souldrinker demon (Fiend folio, name not sure) Kensai/assassin (yes, its a lawful demon. its got a lot of backstory. Its also the strongest of the town bosses)

on top of that, reoccuring characters(no real affiliations with the Solar, stoires unformed as of yet) are:
Hellbred Binder/Crusader
the evil human race varient in BoVD Gunslinger
Goliath Barbarian/Frenzied berserker
Hound Archon ranger

Monstrous encounters are mostly demons, devils and undead, although the idea of a sphinx isnt too unappealing. I have a homebrew race im working on called the Badlands Buzzard, which is essentially a Buzzard with age categories and abilities that could rival the strongest of the non-epic dragons at full fruition, and can grow large enough to snatch adult dragons out of the air like a small snack. there will also be your run of the mill enemies ranging from orcs to angry thugs.

the fourth player is a Shadow Dragon PC, but i dont know what else he is doing yet, he's being vague still. The Evil Solar is epic out the wazzoo, and most these enemies are epic, im just not going to give most of them epic feats or play them epic style because the players arent epic. I refuse to pit them into a conventional arena-style battle with any of these NPCs unless i have to, because i want them to think on their feet. the reoccuring NPCs though, they can fight head to head. they might be a rival party trying to do much the same as they are themselves, collect the fetishes to escape.

Angel-eyes-a wizard loses his wife and goes mad.He begins capturing female angels and other attractive women. He cuts them into pieces and uses the best parts to make a perfect woman. The flesh golem awakens and is horrified by her creation, escapes the wizard and begins fleeing from world to world to escape him. This gives you a flesh golem with celestial template?........I think each town boss should have a non-unique trophy they give out so that multiple groups can quest without having to eliminate each other, but this would be a personel preferrence on my part,do what you feel is real.

I actually really like the flesh golem with the celestial template idea.

what do you mean by non-unique though?

Well if the fetish is just difficult to obtain rather than being unique it increases the chances that the party will be successful. There was once an adventure where the entire dungeon relied on doing one thing correctly.Less than 10%of the people who responded to a thread ever got thru the dungeon.I like the idea of the giant buzzard even though it seems similar to the chaos roc? What are the differences between them besides growth cycle?
