Different worlds (and different authors) tend to highlight different aspects of nations, so what might be necessary to discuss in one setting might be utterly irrelevant in another. For myself, I like to begin with a kind of a "nation at a glance" outline followed by a description of those aspects of the nation I find important. Government Type: Ruling Bodies: Current Leaders: Economic Type: Colonial Type: Currency: Population: Species Demographics: Capitol: Largest City: Religion: Symbols: Major Languages: Nominal Alignment: Now, the above list makes several assumptions about the countries that it was designed for as well as some aspects of nation-building that I find important. I like to know what the economy is like, I like to know what the currency is (and possibly exchange rates with out currencies) and I like to know whether I am dealing with a colonial power or not. Once I've filled out the little blurb I tend to go into a general description of the nation, highlighting such things as political structure, populations, climate and geography, cuisine (hey I'm an armature chef, cooking interests me) and aesthetics. But rather than me rambling like this, here (http://dwenty.pbwiki.com/The%20Most%20Serene%20and%20Beneficent%2 0Republic%20of%20Orothos) is an example of a mostly written up nation for a collaborative world building project that began right here on this very forum. |
