patron_saint 03-22-08, 11:53 PM	Has anyone thought up mechanics for ley lines (like those used in Chris Claremont/George Lucas book series "The Shadow Wars") I've always thought they were an interesting way to look at movement across planes. But how many intersections does it take to "cross the veil"? What variations give you what varying results? And what would casting spells at a ley line do? This has all probably been done, but I thought I'd see what you guys thought.
Half_Dragon_Infernal 03-23-08, 06:16 PM	Have you looked at Complete Divine? It has a class that uses ley lines in it, but possibly not the way those books describe them. I haven't read the books, so I don't know. Class name is Geomancer I think.
patron_saint 03-23-08, 10:52 PM	I was thinking maybe of tying lines to specific spell types (air, fire, good, healing, etc.) and spells of those types be maybe maximized/extended or something, kinda like the planes of ebberon. And that certain high lvl spells must be cast at the convergence of multiple lines to cast, like say resurrection and the like. But I was really wondering how I could tie this into the plot, since right now the campaign is running on, "go here, look for jobs, kill some stuff..." I really need something bigger to be working behind the scenes for them to stumble on. Btw, this all starts next friday. :S

james_gaines 03-25-08, 01:47 AM	What level is the campaign? If you're high enough you might adapt the 'breakers' and the 'beams' from the Dark Tower series. To sum it up: The Dark Tower (which is the lynchpin of the planes) is held up by six beams. The chaotic forces use a large amount of psychics to try to break these beams and destroy the tower. You could do a think with a group of *clerics/druids/demons/wizards/whatever* polluting or destroying ley lines. If they were polluting ley lines it could cause all neutral spells to have the evil modifier attached or disrupt good spells or something like that.
Patrick Draken-Korin 03-30-08, 03:43 PM	Urban Arcana (d20 modern) had something for leylines. Or I thought there was but can't find it. Hmph. Here's what I use; there are lines of power, and they usually follow natural features mountain ranges, rivers, the edge of a desert or swamp, whatever. Where you find them is up to you. Tapping a leyline means being within 1 mile and recognizing it's presence (Spellcraft DC 30 or 25 if within 100ft). take a full-round action to connect, and you remain connected while in range. Using a leyline to which you have connected is a free action when casting a spell or using a spell-like ability; applies a +1 bonus to caster level (some rare ley-lines are more powerful offering a +2 or +3 bonus). Leynodes form where two or more leylines cross. Recognizing a node is easier (Spellcraft DC 25 or 20 if within 100ft), but connecting is harder (requires a caster level check, DC equaling 15 +3 per leyline intersecting after the second). Using a leynode has differnt levels of power; using the node applies a bonus equal to the highest leyline +1. You can also attempt a caster level check (DC same as connecting to the leynode +5) to cast you next spell/spell-like ability with a caster level bonus equaling the bonus of all leylines intersecting the node. ------ That's what I've got, for starters anyway. Restricting the spells that a leyline enhacnes would be resonable, though they'd like be more common than I use (having only the occasional natural feature possessing a leyline). Applying metatmagic feats, I hadn't thought of. Here's a plot-hook I've used; some wizard (a PC or some travelling arcanist) notices a nearby leynode and wants to investigate. If there's a druid they know the whole mess, but don't talk about it to arcanists (darn kids playing with thier loud magic).
