Looking for book suggestions. [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-01-07, 05:59 PM My current campaign is set in a part of my homebrew world somewhat based on the holy roman empire. To help me in coming up with ideas and info on this land I’m looking for suggestions for books on the holy roman empire (mostly from around 100AD to 1300AD) as well as any on German myths or folklore.
Just trying to round out the area a bit.

12-02-07, 10:35 AM I am actually using the same historical time period for my Rathgard Empire in my Midgard Campaign posted on this board.

There are not a lot of really good books out there however I have actually found some of the most help on the internet. Just Google "Holy Roman Empire" and a TON of very useful references will pop up for your inspection.

I do however use "Kingdoms of Europe" by Gene Gurney, The "Cambridge Illustrated History of Germany" by Martin Kitchen and "Germany: 2000 Years" by Kurt Reinhardt as companion resources. The nice thing about these books is that they are all written for the non-scholar AND recognize the fact that German history is MUCH more than Hitler and the Nazis.

12-03-07, 06:19 PM Try A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara Tuchman. It is mostly about France but also includes parts about the Holy Roman Empire during that period. I also recommend the chronicle of the 4th Crusade by Geoffroi de Villehardouin, which again is more about the crusade but also includes information about the Balkans and the southern Holy Roman Empire during that period as well as stuff on the Byzantine Empire.
