Looking for some tips on a campaign. [Archive] - Wizards Community

This is my first post here and I am seeking any tips that you may have on a Dragon and Abberation campaign.

I have Draconomicon and The Lords of Madness, so if there are any other books for the campaign you think I should pick-up let me know.

It is for 3 to possibly 4 players.

I don't really know what characters, but knowing the people (This is our first one together) it will be something along the lines of Cleric, Barbarian/Fighter, Rogue, Paladin/Wizard.

I'd prefer starting at level 1 (Although I have a feeling it will have to be raised to start from here) with a plot along the lines of exploring a cave to eliminate a dragon that the local town wants eliminated. After slaying or perhaps *not* slaying the dragon, they find a small passage in the back of the cave which leads deep underground to an Illithid city which is stealing the above dragon's offspring and using them for experiments to create a *super army.*

What characters? What levels? Plot? Antagonists?
I'm willing to help, but I need a bit more than knowing which books you have access to.

04-07-08, 11:00 PM As for books I would consider savage species,Libris mortis,races of the dragon,Serpent Kingdom. Have you ever wondered what would happen if a Beholder used it's disintergrator eye and blasted a shaft staight down towards the earth's core? A beholder could probably go 20 miles straight down in a single day. Would this lead to a pellucidararian world like edgar rice burroughs? Imagine finding a "Neon Fungle". Deep underground would be mushrooms that surround themselves with a magic effect like the Fairy Fire spell. Make some of the mushrooms as tall as trees and you have a surreal enviroment. Random Thoughts.

Sweet. Now, there is a little problem with starting all of that at 1st level. Still, a quick brainstorming:
- Use grimlocks: powerful, but not as powerful as illithids great to level up until you're high enough.
- Slaying an actual dragon is pretty tough before level 5 or so. However, I don't have much experience with dragons, so I'm afraid I can't help you on that one.
- How does the dragon react to its youngs being stolen? Did it make a deal with the illithids (or maybe with the adventurers)? Is it angry?
For an additional twist, consider making the PCs responsible for it: Once they slay the dragon, the illithids burst in, unhindered by the beast, mind blast the party and head off with the wyrmlings.
- What kind of "experiments"? Half-dragon grimlocks (or illithids)? Spell development? Doomdsday maching?

That's all I can come up with for now. I'll think about it some more.

Yeah I wasn't thinking of a full Wyrm or Great Wyrm dragon, but one maybe just old enough to start laying its eggs.

I planned it as the dragon does know its young are being stolen, but it is enraged that it can do nothing to stop it, due to magical bonds stopping it from harming the Illithids, along with it in an almost constant state of exaustion from watching for threats. This rage drives it to attack the nearby towns, for a few reasons. One, is that being like us sometimes you just want to get up and punch someone when you're mad. (in this case, breath acid on them.)

Another idea which is kind of *far out there* is that it has a higher intellect than most, and is desperately hoping that by causing this scene, it will drive people to investigate the lair and ultimately slay the Illithids.

The "Super-Army" is in experimentation stage, as they have not been able to find a perfect "solider." So there will be Half-Dragons/Half- <Random Here>.
