| Tokus09-04-07, 08:07 PM | what is are some good references/resources for creating a magic-less or low magic world. I wanna create one where magic is so rare that it is only practiced by the most powerful being/creatures. Granted, I am not shooting for realism here, just a primitive game world where clerical magics are mostly shamanistic and arcane arts are almost non-existent. It will exist but as a very highly guarded secret among those who practice it. perhaps you could also suggest some things to consider in such an environment as well. |
| PoorHobo09-04-07, 11:50 PM | I know its not exactly homebrew but check into the Iron Heroes book (a replacement for the PHB, not intended to be used with regular pc classes), its friggin awesome. Magic is not only rare but dangerous as well, and PCs can be cool without needing a magic. Other than that, some of the things I have toyed with is reducing monstersw abilities by 1 per 4 CR, I mean everything, Save DC's AB, AC, Saves, HP and maybe even HD. Without plenty of magic items With a little flavor and maybe a reworking of class skills the NPC adept makes an awesome shaman. The Arcanists could be the bardic sage variant from the UA and the SRD Thus stopping 7 - 9th level spells from being in your world at all (including that darned epic casting). |

Mongoose Publishing has a website that has info on it and you could also try their free downloadable magazine, Signs and Portents which has archives and issues that have articles on settings and ideas and so on. |
| nimblewright9309-13-07, 04:48 PM | while i do hate the pospect of no magic:yuck: i would just exclude magic base classes and do as a true dm should and make your own but if you insist on this buy a D20 modern game. |
| Nadaka09-13-07, 08:55 PM | d20 modern. No really. D20 modern. The core setting is no-magic. Though setting specific advanced classes may introduce some magic at later levels. |
| Tokus09-13-07, 11:10 PM | well I don't want magic to be at all common, like no starting as a mage class and getting training as a mage would be nigh impossible, that way even a lowly magic missle would seem amazing. I'm not sure what to do about clerics and their c\spell casting, healing is important but in low magic world they could potentially be dangerously overpowered w/o curbing their spell list quite a bit. |
| Nadaka09-13-07, 11:21 PM | D20 Modern has all the answers you need. The dedicated hero with a medical kit, the surgery feat and the healing knack talent makes a fairly decent healer in his own right. Add to that that no magic casting class is available before level 4 (and maxes out at caster level 10) and you have a lot less to worry about magic disrupting the game. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd The magic using advanced classes are here, notice how all of them have prerequisites that demand at least 3 levels of a base class. http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/msrd/msrdadvancedclassesII.rtf |
