08-22-07, 03:13 PM Currently I'm developing a classic fantasy setting. I have most everything written up, but I've currently hit a roadblock with names. The two major nations have a holy roman empire and byzantine empire feel respectively, but I cannot think of good names. I have a few cities and every place and NPC named, i just need nation/capitol names. Any suggestions?

08-22-07, 06:42 PM Do you have any idea of who founded them? Empires or cities are often named after famous builders, leaders or conquerers, such as Alexandria (Alexander the Great), Constantinople (Constantine), and Rome (Romulus).

08-22-07, 08:46 PM Well the pseudo-byzantine empire was founded centuries before from an alliance of human and dwarves. The goblinoids had swept through the region and were devastating the various city states, and out of necessity they began to work together. The capital is in a large valley where the allied armies made their last stands, the two great passes held by the dwarves gave the men time to form a strike team to attack and subsequently killed the hobgoblin warlord.

Now the two passes are defended by great gates crafted by the dwarves and the capitol is built around a massive temple/palace complex carved into the largest mountain the surrounds the valley. Due to its large size, many small farming communities sprang up in the valley, making this surrounding landscape self sufficient during the many wars in the region.

The nation itself has a landscape similar to that of Greece and Turkey, very mountainous and fairly temperate. Many locals have trained griffins as mounts, using them for reconnaissance and quick personal travel in the winding landscape. Deep in the south lies the Dead Sands, which legends sat is the blasted remnants of an ancient empire cursed by the gods for their foul practices and beliefs. Though the empire claims it as part of it, only a few fringe towns are truly under their control. For the most part it is populated by nomadic bandits who raid the small cities and disappear back into the desert.
