Hello everyone. Since this is my first time in the Campaign Forums, let me take this opportunity to say hello to all of my collegues and friends here, and to place myself at the disposal of any thing you need.

Well, to the point.

(If you know Naruto in it's anime/manga, please skip the next paragraph).

I am a great manga and anime fan, and four of my main D&D players asked me to construct a little Naruto based adventure, which struck us as great since we are all fans and regular watchers of the series. For those who don't know what Naruto is, it is a somewhat long-standing manga series, recently adapted to anime. The setting is in a series of countries, dedicated to several elements (Country of Fire, Country of Wind) and several "hidden villages" in these countries, the main one being the Hidden Village of Leaf, where the main characters come from. Hidden Villages are ninja villages, where from a young age, children begin being educated in the arts of the ninja, eventually controlling and harnessing their own skills and spiritual/body energy (called "chakra") and using it to express a series of abilities known has Jutsu, later to be employed as mercenaries to the highest bidder in several missions. The main focus of the story is Naruto Uzamaki, a young ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village, a young boy that has a demon-fox sealed inside him, and his adventures, specially regarding his friend, Uchiha Sasuke.
One of the greatest callings of the series are the "jutsu", or "ninja techniques", themselves. Similar to a fusion between a Feat and a Spell, they consist in the shaping of Chakra into several abilities, from spitting fire (Fire-Technique: Fireball Jutsu), body growth (Chakra-Release: Double Weight Technique) animal summoning, elemental control, shapeshifting and illusion techniques. They give an extra flavor to each character, specially since each character has different jutsu and even variations of each jutsu.

Ok, very well, to the point.

Me and my players are taking a very informal take on Naruto, and I'm not developing a whole new system from scratch. I eliminated Races for Families (such has Uchiha, Nara and such) and classes, atributing to my players a much more personal character with specific traits. But there is still a problem: chakra. You see, I need a way of creating a Chakra pool based on abilities.
Since players only get a few jutsu (at level 4, most players only have roughly 2 abilities besides their base ones. At this point, Nara Hikage, one of my players, would have Shadow-Based: Shadow Imitation Technique and Shadow-Based: Fake Shadow Imitation Technique), these waste Chakra "points" to be used, much like mana. So, if a player wants to be more physical and attempt to solve fighting and puzzles by use of hand-to-hand combat, they must rely on Str, Con and Dex (Think Rock Lee or Tenten). If players want to use more chakra-based techniques, they must be based more on Wis, Int or Cha. So, how do I use these guidelines to build an effective "point system" for my characters to spend on abilities?

At this point, I am accepting any opinions, whether you know Naruto or not! I have plenty of questions, but at this point, this is the main one.

Thank you for any replies.

I'd say have those shadow ablilities as well as most genjutsu fall under an int system, and have things like koton or chidori under wisdom. As for Taijutsu, rock lee's kind of fighting should be str based, and neji's style should be more dex based. Ninjutsu techniques that don't seem illusion or destruction based should be cha based, like shadow doppelganger or even the infamous "centerfold", however, transformations( including chouji's expansion stuff) should use con. As for determining chakra points, I think the characters should choose 1 or 2 specializations for jutsu types(perhaps you could implement a class/feat for an additional specialization, albeit at some sort of penalty, see below.) and you would add your ability scores for each specialization's main attribute, divide by the nuber of specializations you have chosen, and that's your chakra. A weak jutsu will take little chakra, and opening the gate of life will take almost all of your chakra. I'm going to leave it to you to decide how much chakra each jutsu will take.

Wow, this has inspired me to make a naruto campaign. good luck with yours!

I don't have any actual suggestions for your idea, but I do have this for you.

Most of the Naruto stuff can be accomplished with the D&D rules already, using psionics and some proper flavouring.

Here is a link if your interested in looking at what has been done.

Thanks FF6Shadow, for the heads up on most information, but for what I see (and I am completly new in terms of Psionics) aren't they a little too complex and heavy for lvl1 PC's? Just a question, since I am completly blank. I was tought by another DM, and he always said one thing to me, which he claimed to be one of his most valuable lessons: Stay away from Psionics. What is your opinion on the subject?

Benghazi, thanks for the reply. I agree a lot with what you are saying, but I did not quite understand what you told me about "you would add your ability scores for each specialization's main attribute, divide by the nuber of specializations you have chosen, and that's your chakra". I didn't understand this phrase, could you please give me an example of it?

At this point, I have four characters: A Nara, a Uchiha, and two new characters: a Mist-nin capable of Water Controlling and a very combat-oriented young man called Muzou that uses little jutsu but fights using a monkey-style with a staff. I am currently preparing their characters, and most of them want the basis: the Uchiha wants a standart Fire Ball jutsu (I'm thinking about a 1d6 Ranged Attack, then, at lvl3, make it 2d6, at level 6, make it 3d6, along with other abilities), the Nara wants his Shadow Imitation Technique (ranged attack, ignores Armor AC, Allows Reflex Save, Paralyzes Target and continues to spend chakra for each round active), the Mist-nin wants a very basic Water Missile Attack, and the Monkey Character just wants to take combat feats.

Benghazi, thanks for the reply. Sure,

Let's take Neji for example

He specializes in hyuuga tajutsu that uses dex as a base, which would give him abilities such as long combos and nerve-hitting strikes, and jyuuken(offensive employment of chakra which would be wis based) would give chakra-stopping hits and a huge knockback ability.

I've decided to elaborate on my chakra system, dividing actual chakra(comes from int, wis and cha) and stamina(from str, dex and con). Hyuuga taijutsu hits would consume stamina, but his jyuuken would consume chakra. His stamina for taijutsu would be half of his dex, and his chakra for jyuuken would be half his wis, because he has 2 specializations. If he were to do a jutsu that involved his taijutsu and his jyuuken deeply integrated, he would consume both stamina and chakra.

Let's say his dex=16 and his wis=17. His stamina would be 8 and we'll round up on his wis, making his chakra 9. Now, If he were to pick up genjutsu(int based), this would change, because he would divide by 3 rather than 2 to get his chakra. For example:
Int=15 dex=16 wis=17. 15/3=5, 16/3=5(rounded down), 17/3=6(rounded up)
so, his genjutsu chakra would be 5, hyuuga taijutsu stamina 5, and jyuuken chakra 6.

Let's take a look at our other example: Lee
Lee has only one specialization, Gouken(str based taijutsu), so his stamina would be his undivided str(16). If he were to learn hyuuga taijutsu, he would have to apply his dex(18), and divide his two sets of stamina(8 for Gai's taijutsu, 9 for Neji's).
Forgetting about Neji's taijutsu, say if Lee took another specialization that also used str(zabuza's swordfighting, for example). His stamina would still divide by two, even though he uses the same stat(str).

Now, about your monkey guy.
He seems to be the most differential in your team, so let's pay him some attention. Combat feats are closer to fighter, but there is definitely a way to implement this system into such a character. Their fighting style will decide how to do this, If I were to make a monkey ninja fighter, I would give it the angry fox thing Naruto gets, except monkey, which would go on wis, and Rock Lee taijutsu for mobility, power and adaptability, and if I were to take a third, it would be tentens weapon stuff for the proficiency with everything, making it a naruto-style fighter.

In conclusion, I have 1 idea you may have already thought of, because it would be necessary for this system to scale, is to give more max chakra/stamina per level, according to class, or if you prefer, family, so a hyuuga would get more chakra for jyuuken and hyuuga taijutsu, but a slower rate of growth for additional specialization. Hope I didn't miss anything!

Don't change anything from normal D&D. It's not necessary. All that's really needed is for you to drop multiclass restrictions. Naruto at the beginning can be made using a 3rd level character, and 32 point buy. All you need is for him to take Precocious Apprentice and he's got his Shadow Clone Jutsu, using Summon Monster II to summon a few 1st level versions of himself. It doesn't make as many as in the anime or manga, but it still works. Neji can be built using Tome of Battle, as one of the manuevers that lets you change your AC into the result of an attack roll seems perfect for the Rotation. All that's needed is a manuever that lets him make touch attacks.

Two comments about this entire thing.
First, the chakra abilities could be martial manuevers, along with some fancy combat abilities(see tome of battle). Second, psionics is fine, its not that complicated, and it is okay to use now. A few editions ago, it wasn't as simple.\

So for martial manuevers, lets say you get 8, just really simply. Here are some examples.
1. Flying kick, knock an opponent prone on the square behind him on a successful attack.
2. Nerve strike, opponent takes a -4 penalty to attack next round.
3. Throw counter, when an opponent attacks you, make a touch attack. If you succeed, roll an opposed strength check. If you fail this, you don't take damage, if you succeed you throw them 10 feet behind you, prone, and they take 1d6 damage.
4. Whistling Thorn Strike(the chakra ability), send 5 thorns at your opponent, they deal 1d6 damage each, as well as 1 con damage. These are ranged touch attacks.
5. Driving Punch, deal lethal damage equal to unlethal damage dealt.
3 repeats, depending on what is used more often. Probably 2 more driving puches and another flying kick.

Just look at the warblade class, but use a different recovery method, they come back after you have used all of them. Maybe some stronger attacks will be once a day to make up for this, that wouldn't normally be there.

I would disagree somewhat with using martial manuevers to represent the jutsu of Naruto. Ninjutsu and Genjutsu can not be done all day, so the unlimited nature of martial manuevers makes it harder to play using the knowledge that jutsu could not be used indefinetely. However, Taijutsu can be used all day long, so they work perfectly as martial manuevers. As for the bloodlines, feats can be made to represent them. I've made a version of the Sharingan, up to Two Tomoe, and I haven't had any problems with them yet.

Like Holy Beholder said, psionics used to be bad. Now they're pretty good.

And you right, it is a bit complicated for 1st level characters. But its a good starting point. Even if you don't want to use it, it gives a general idea about bonuses and damage for various techniques.

Additionally, thanks to the psionic feat Up the Walls, at least you can easily represent the walking on walls ability.

nightscreamer20 created a shinobi class that covers what you're looking for.

There is off course another way of doing it ... taking from the Sorcerer class, employing "slots". But it's kinda hard to determine how many slots per level, should I follow the Sorcerer? It kinda feels a little too much to feed so many slots, specially second and third level ones .... a slot system would also work. Could your point system Benghazi be able to be adapted to a slot system, with perhaps DC for Concentration to do? More physical characters would have less slots, more chakra based characters would have more slots. Or, I could go for a "class" like system. A Shinobi could have more slots, a Warrior-nin could have less slots but could choose more Combat Feats (Monkey Style, Combos...), a Kage (Shadow in Japanese, I think) could have more Illusion-Based Slots, etc...

Mindolin, indeed, Bloodlines are Feats in my campaign. Currently, I have developed 1st level Sharingan (pretty much, it's an instant identification of Jutsu up to Chuunin Level, and a +2 Bonus in Reflex Saves against ranged jutsu and a +2 Will Save to detect illusions). Do you think it's too weak for level 1 Sharingan? (It's not a lvl1 PC sharingan .... Sharingan can only be obtained roughly at 4th PC level.) I also have at least two more Bloodlines Limits to create: Ketsueki Manako (roughly "Blood Eye") which is a Jutsu from a hunter-nin from my created Hidden Night Village, and Yuurei Hanto Kami (roughly, "Ghost Hand God") from Kumori, a missing-nin (yes, I already have the campaign and the arcs all figured out lol).

I could also use and adaptation of basic and standart D&D, but since there are so little abilities at first (I do have to adapt the basic ones, The Replacement Technique, Body Clone Jutsu, Shadow Cloth Jutsu...), that I have decided to go for something more personal, specially since my characters are who they are.

Thank you all for the replies.

Well, certain jutsu don't need the hand signs or focus of chakra, so I'd say if you wanted to make it into a slot system, go ahead, but put the concentration check on the jutsu that need hand signs and channeling of chakra. You could give less physical characters less slots and vice versa, but make sure that they're balanced, because people could get carried away with crazy jutsu that more physical guys don't have an equivalent of. Even Lee can open 5 gates of life. For someone like gaara, they'd need a heck of a load of jpd(jutsu per day), but no abilities other than jutsu.

So try to understand what kind of character your PCs want to play, and give them a progression relative to how much they will rely on jutsu as opposed to combat, and give them known jutsu/jutsu per day of anywhere from that of a hexblade to that of a sorcerer.

The advantage of using D&D as a base is that much of the work is already done. The Clone Jutsu is using Silent Image, Shadow Clone is using Summon Monster to summon an extraplanar version of you, with level equal to the list you summon it from. Replacement Jutsu is much harder, but can be described as a missed attack roll, followed by a withdraw action, and a Bluff to confuse your opponent into not realizing where you went. The way I worked the rank of the techniques is that 0-1 levels are Academy students, 2-3 are Genin skills, 4-5 are Chunin skills, 6-7 are Jonin, 8-9 are Kage level abilities. Multiclassing would be necessary for the campaign, and something to think about is making a few new Reserve Feats from Complete Mage to allow for near constant use of minor Jutsu.

You might want to change the name of the illusion user to Gen instead of Kage, because while Kage does indeed translate to shadow, it is also the title of the leaders of the villages, at least the five great ones. Gen, however, means illusion, so that would work just as well.

I'm getting really a lot of useful responses around here, thanks! So, I'm trying to incorporate some of my slot ideia. Let's do this then. I just use the Sorceror Slot, which I will now call Shinobi. The Shinobi is a Wis-based class, since they use a lot of Chakra. The Shinobi starts with:

4x 0lvl Techniques
2x 1lvl Techniques.

Should I use the Wis bonus in learning even more per level, like in normal D&D?

So, let's take this in a more conceptual matter. One of my players is Uchiha Ryoku, an Uchiha Clan member. My player wanted a basic Uchiha, so I gave him the Shinobi Class. He has two starting Feats, plus the Techniques I gave him. I decided that he should have, as level 1 Shinobi, a few of the basic Naruto Techniques. Then, I should give him at least 1/2 techniques that fit his style, at least a fire-based ranged attack. I gave him 2 Lvl' Techniques: Body Clone Jutsu is a Standart Action that creates a weak lvl1 Clone of yourself, that deals 0 damage and has 1 HP for one hour. A DC Spot of 12 detects the clone. Then, I gave him Ninja Cloth Technique, which pretty much just gives him +4 in Hide Checks. In terms of long range attacks, I decided to give him a Lvl1 Technique, of course called Fire-Release: Fireball Jutsu. A normal Ranged Attack that deals 1d6 Fire Damage, and I adapted Burning hands into Fire-Release: Dragon Breath Jutsu, which is just an adapted Burning Hands (2d4). But I do have some doubts about this system .... how do I scale damage? I can't simply continue to replace abilities ... Both Dragon Breath and Fireball Jutsus should scale up. How? plus 1d6 and 1d4 per 3 lvl's? Per 4 levels? Just keep adapting?

And by the way, how do I do Illusion Techniques such has Body Replacement Jutsu, Body Switch Jutsu (switch body with a clone) and such?

Any ideas are always welcomed!

Sorry if I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but it's easiest to simply reflavor some of the things in D&D instead of make new things of questionable balance. What your Shinobi Uchiha looks like is a human sorcerer. All you need for Fireball Jutsu is either Lesser Orb of Fire, or since it looks a little like an area of effect spell, Burning Hands. Just reflavor the somatic components and you've got it. Remember, the characters of Naruto started at higher than level 1 simply through training at the Academy. All the Clone Jutsu is is a 0 level spell, that only creates a single image of the caster. Much of this work is already done, if you use normal D&D rules and just flavor it a little different. Anyway, the Dragon Flame Jutsu, which Sasuke does on the wires, is simply Burning Blades cast on a whip. For switching bodies with a clone, that would likely be a use of the spell Benign Transposition, from Spell Compendium

Wow, this has inspired me to make a naruto campaign. good luck with yours!

This thread has also inspired me to run a naruto campaing! :D

Though I would like to run it as Mindolin suggested, changing the D&D system the least as possible, so I would be glad if you could tell us a bit more of how to do it and how would you handle the chackra system.

Also, if it's not asking to much, colud you post the sources of the feats or spells you would use.

TheSuspect I would also like to hear more about the classes you have made for the campaing and the Bloodline feats you created.

Thanks and sorry if I sounded a bit demanding it's just some things I felt curious about, feel free to ignore me if you want to.

I see. I've been taking a look at the Spell Compendium and I found a lot of great flavoring spells, such as the Orbs, Benign Transportation and such, really useful for emulating most of Naruto's powers. I still hve to create a few of my own, specially Shadow-Imitation: Shadow Imitation Technique, Water-Release: Water Eel Missile (used by one of the main villains, an electricty/water attack in the shape of a projected eel) and such. I'm gonna post a list later of all the main Jutsu's I think that can be emulated. Any help would be appreciated. At this point, we have:

Body Switch Technique -» lvl1 Benign Transportation (Readied Action?)(SC)
Illusion-Technique: Body Change Technique -» lvl0 Minor Desguise Self(SC)
Fire-Release: Fireball Technique-» lvl1 Orb of Fire(SC)
Fire-Release: Fiery Dragon Breath Technique -» lvl1 Burning Hands(PH)
Fire-Release: Dragon Oil Fire Technique -» Ray of Flame(SC)

(the "SC" stands for Spell Compendium, and "PH" for Player's Handbook).

Necromancer, I'll try to post them later, since I have not completed them yet. Of my own created Kenkkai, I only have Ketsueki Manako: Blood Eye created. It's a Bloodline feats only usable from the Hikage family in my fictional Hidden Night Village. It's a Tracking Bloodline. It allows the wearer to see perfectly in the dark, and it also allows the user to see blood flowing from wounds. The users tend to wound their targets with needles and then follow the blood trail to them. I also works in conjuction with Transformation-Technique: Feral Darkness and Transformation-Technique: Four-Legs Transformation, used by the Hikage family.

I also found a few more spells that could fit Naruto jutsu's.

Earth-Release: Tile Shuriken - Hail of Stone (SC)
Water-Release: Dragon Water Strike - Animate Water (SC)
Razengan - Inflict Light Wounds (Series) (PH)
Chidori - Belker's Claws (SC)

So, I took some time today to re-design two of my favorite characters in Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke and Gaara of Desert. I want to post them here with a few explanations, plus I made a mock-up match between them using actual D20 rules that went amazingly well.

I just wanted to know one thing, how do you hide text in the forum so It can only be red when you press the "Show" button?

My group and I are starting a nauto campaign soon hopefully, The way we did it is almost entirely with reflavouring standard D&D classes/feats/spells.

Everyone is a Gestalt ninja/Whatever. The ninja class mostly covers the skill aspect of being a ninja, the other class determines the specialty for example, the average ninja would be a gestalt Ninja/Sorceror+monk , Medical-nin are ninja/cleric , Kiba would be Ninja/bard. Lee would be the exception being a Gestalt monk/fighter.

In terms of Jutsu there is a group of generic ninja abilities; spider climb, benign transposition etc. that are available to all ninja, additionally each ninja has a group of specialty Jutsu for example, one of the players is a member of the Nara clan and so has accese to a number of shadow-related spells.

The only other variant rule we use is the Class defense bonus (also in Unearthed Arcana, along with the Gestalt system) This helps mitigate the fact that you don't see any Ninja walking around in full-plate.

Loved them. My approach is quite more ... direct and upgraded. I actually had to use a lot of upgrading and tuning of skills, along with the creation of a few new ones.

Here, Ichiha Sasuke is seen has what a player could have , and Gaara is more of a "boss-like" character for them to face.

I have been only DM'ing for a few months, so forgive me for any mistakes!

Always Exhausted (PH): Gaara does not sleep due to the fact that he is possessed by the Jinchuuriki Shukaku. He is considered to be always Exhausted.

Jinchuuriki Shukaku (Soul of Shukaku)
This is a very special ability that defines Gaara and his combat style. Gaara himself is a weak combatant, so the Jinchuuriki Shukaku count has a “Magical Beast” that surrounds Gaara of the Desert. It is considered to be Huge and has it’s own set of statistics. The core of it is located in the Sand Gourd. Gaara uses it and it’s abilities to fight. If Gaara is defeated, the Jinchuuriki Shukaku is considered to be Unconscious. The Jinchuuriki Shukaku is capable of psychic communication with Gaara, but otherwise cannot speak.

(* The Jinchuuriki Sand Arm is considered to be a Earthen Grasp spell from the S.C. Jinchuuriki Shukaku may create two arms at the beginning of each round has a Free Action, at the maximum of 4.)

Special Abilities:
Level 4 Nin: Jinchuuriki Shukaku may use his Jutsu and Techniques as if he was a lvl4 Sorcerer.
Sand Protection: Jinchuuriki Shukaku uses it’s sand to protect Gaara against attacks. It is always active and cannot be suppressed. Gaara gains +6AC. Plus, he I considered to have the Catch Arrow Feat for Thrown Weapons. He also has 50% coverage.
Armor of Sand: Has a Free Action, Shukaku may use Armor of Sand to protect and envelop Gaara. Armor of Sand gives Gaara +6AC and DR 5/-, plus SR 5/- (Spell here being considered Jutsu). The Armor of Sand has 25HP, an AC equal do Gaara’s and Hardness of 5. For each round the Armor stays on Gaara, it drains 1 Chakra Point from him (any level).
Sand Fall: Gaara does not receive damage from falling.
Blood Soaked: The sand in the Jinchuuriki Shukaku Gourd that Gaara carries is soaked in the blood of fallen enemies. The DC for any Scent related ability to track it is reduced by -5. Gaara gains +2 in Intimidate checks due to the heavy blood scent that surrounds him.
Jinchuuriki Shukaku Defense: Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromancy effects. Not subject to critical hits, non-lethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. Sand-Release: Third Eye of Shukaku (Arcane Eye, 25ft range from Gaara)
Earth-Release: Sand Creation Technique (Soften Earth and Stone, Sand only)

The extra spell slots (or Chakra Points, CP), are done this way for both Sasuke and Gaara: divide your Wisdom (or Int bonus, whichever is highest) by the following manner: in lvl0, add a full CP bonus equal do your modifier (+4Bonus = +4 CP), in the lvl1, add only half, and in lvl2, only had a third, rounded down.
Also, each character was given 75 Ability Points (AP) to use and to distribute among the several abilities.

Opinions anyone?

This is a real (not simulated) battle that incured has a test between two of my players: one playing Gaara, the other one playing Sasuke. Everything in it was actual. We used the standart Battle Grind with a few 15ftx15ft trees.
Both players are somewhat experienced D&D players but both had a somewhat mid knowledge of Naruto (anime basic) but they are currently catching up, but the fact that they didn't know of a lot of the jutsu helped create an enviorment of awe and surprise.

Battle: Uchiha Sasuke vs Gaara
Site: Forest (A small clear in the middle, surrounded by large trees)
Players: Carlos Fonseca (Uchiha Sasuke) vs Filipe Moras (Gaara Of The Desert).

Uchiha Sasuke slips quietly into the area, looking around. Standing in the middle of some low underbush, lie the dead body of four ninjas, each splattered in the blood of some unseen Jutsu. In the middle of the four ninjas stands a small boy, surrounded by a wall of moving and swirling golden sand. Sasuke stands before him, grasping his kunai and evaluating his opponent carefully. Raising two fingers to his face, he mutters “Sharingan” beneath his breath, his eyes taking becoming deeper and crimson. “Uchiha …. Sasuke “mutters the blood haired boy, the sand weaving itself into complicated patterns that resemble grasping hands and claws “Uchiha Sasuke … I am going …To kill …. You!”

Pre-Round
Sasuke Rolls for Initiative and gets a 11. Gaara Rolls of Initiative and gets a 4. Gaara already has Armor of Sand active, and Sasuke goes first, drawing a Kunai from his holder and charging at Gaara.

Round One
Uchiha Sasuke uses a Free Action and activates his Sharingan. He stands at 30ft from Gaara of the Desert and launches a Kunai. He rolls a 11, not enough to pierce Gaara’s 18AC defense. Not knowing what attacks he has in his reserve, so Sasuke just moves 10ft backwards, and waits.

Round Two (9/8/4)
Gaara must lose one Chakra Point in order to maintain his Armor of Sand, so he loses 1 lvl0 Chakra Point in order to maintain it, becoming 9/8/4 in CP (this will now be shown near the name of each of Gaara’s Rounds).
Gaara silently moves forward 20ft, now having Sasuke in range for one of his basic attacks. One of his Sand Arms raises itself high into the air, and slams at Sasuke. He Rolls a 15, enough to hit Sasuke and slam him into the ground. Sasuke receives 8 damage, and falls to 27HP.

Round Three (7/7/2)
Sasuke moves 20ft back and gets cover from a small tree. He then quickly seals and unleashes a barrage of flying phoenix-shaped fireballs using Fire-Release: Exploding Phoenix Fire Barrage (Scorching Ray). Two fireballs fly towards Gaara, and Sasuke Rolls low for a 6 and a 4, making them hit Gaara’s shielding sand walls. Sasuke now has lost 1 lvl2 Chakra Point (this will now be shown near the name of each of Sasuke’s Rounds).

Round Four (8/8/4)
Gaara moves forward slowly and thrusts his Sand Arm against Sasuke and his beloved tree. He unfortunately rolls for a 3, not enough to hit Sasuke. Still, I decided to claim that the massive attack struck the tree down, shattering it to splinters.

Round Five (7/6/2)
Sasuke moves out of the way, and moves 30ft to the side. He picks up two Kunai and decides to use them by using his family technique, Shadow Summon Weapon (Guided Shot), by throwing one of the Kunai in the shadow of the other one. He rolls a 20 (critical), and decides to roll again, rolling a weak 7. Although not enough, he still strikes Gaara, and deals 4 points of damage, absorbed by his Armor of Sand, and drops down it’s Hitpoints from 25HP to 21HP.

Round Six (7/7/4)
Gaara turns to Sasuke and walks close, and this time, with a few hand gestures, launches Sand-Release: Sand Shuriken (Hail of Stone) at Sasuke. Three sand projectiles leap from the sand around Gaara, straight for Sasuke. Gaara rolls a 6 and the sand-bullets impact in the ground around Sasuke, missing him blankly. Gaara sneers and gestures, raising his sand arms around him.

Round Seven (7/6/1)
It’s Sasuke’s turn now, and he knows he has little chance of using common weaponry against Gaara, since his Armor of Sand will likely absorb everything, and his sand will stop most projectiles thrown directly at him. He also knows his Shadow Weapon Technique might just go around that. Grabbing a specially prepared shuriken from the holder in his leg, Sasuke seals for Fire-Release: Flaming Shuriken Technique (Fire Shuriken). The small shuriken blazes out in a flicker, and a large reddish flame appears around it. Sasuke knows he only has once chance. He knows he must get in range, to hit Gaara. He moves 30ft to the side and patiently waits, holding the flaming shuriken up.

Round Eight (6/7/4)
Gaara angrily approaches. He is tired of this whelp and wants to smash him like the bug he is. He sends forth a gush of raging sand in the shape of a raise fist and slams at Sasuke, rolling a 13, and hitting Sasuke, dealing 8 damage and reducing him to 19HP. But before Sasuke can react, the massive sand surrounds him and traps him in a sarcophagus of spinning sand. Gaara extends his palm and uses Sand-Release: Desert Coffin Technique (2d6 Constrict) and explodes the sand around Sasuke. He clenches his teeth and forces his own body not to give into the forces attempting to drive his body apart. Gaara rolls for a 5 and a 4 and deals nine damage to Sasuke, bringing him to 10HP.

Round Nine (7/6/1)
At this point, things got funny. The Sasuke’s character player knew the anime so he asked if he could hide in a tree top. The tree around are tall trees, roughly 20ft high, with dense foliage (total concealment). I tell him that there could be a high Jump DC, be he immediately solves it by sealing and using Chakra-Release: Great Jump Technique. I claim that for him to jump to a nearby tree he has to beat a DC 25. He rolls and obtains a 17, more than enough for his jump. He is now hidden in the treetop of a tree, waiting for his chance to attack Gaara.

Round Ten (5/7/3)
Gaara (and specially my Gaara player) is angry at the hidden Sasuke. I call for a Spot vs Hide Check, and award Sasuke a +4 Hide Bonus. Gaara rolls a total of 12 against Sasuke’s total of 15. Hoping to bring down Sasuke from his hideout, he attacks the tree. I declare it has 60HP, an AC of 3 and a Hardness of 10. My player thinks it over, and then grins to me. Sealing quickly, he uses Sand-Release: Third Eye of Shukaku (Arcane Eye) and sends it to spy on top of the tree. He then moves 10ft closer to the tree, and passes.

Round Eleven (7/5/1)
Sasuke, at this point, didn’t want to take any chances. He quickly drew his Flaming Shuriken and, give heart to his idea, used Shadow Summon Shuriken and launched three shurikens in order to conceal the flaming one. He rolled a 3 for the first shuriken and the second was lost to concealment, but the third ignored it and flew straight at Gaara with a roll of 19, and exploded on his chest. Sasuke rolls a 3, a 4 and a 1, for a total of 8. The armor absorbs 5 damage, but 3 still pass, and Gaara is brought back from 15HP to 12HP. He then decides to move out of the tree and 30ft far away from the tree and Gaara.

Round Twelve (4/7/2)
Gaara decides to call in for help. First, he drops on of his Kunai in the floor before him, and then seals for Sand-Release: Sand Clone on top of the Kunai, so that the clone grows grasping the Kunai in his hand. I laughed and allowed it. He then moved forward 20 ft and waited.

The Sand Clone (Clock "Hide" to see).

Gaara’s Sand Clone
HP: 1
Init: +0 (+2 Dexterity,-2 Clone)
AC: 12
Speed: 20ft
Attacks: Slam +2
Damage: Slam 1d4+1 Subdual
Special Attacks: None.
Special Abilities: Sand Clone, Clone Qualities.
Feats: Catch Arrow.
Abilities: Str 12, Dex 14, Con -, Wis -, Int - , Cha -
Saves: Fort -, Ref +2, Will -

Special Abilities:
Sand Clone: A Gaara Sand Clone created from his own sand is considered to have a DR/SR 5/-. A Sand Clone also does not provide AC or cover to a target is Gaara attacks him while he is in melee with a Sand Clone.
Clone Qualities: Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromancy effects. Not subject to critical hits, non-lethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).

Round Thirteen (7/5/0)
At this point, my Sasuke player started to see everything against him. Anything he could do would probably get blocked, avoided or simply absorbed. The Sand Clone was also going to be a problem, and with the Third Eye floating around, hiding in the trees was just going to be impossible. He decides to go Flavour and charge using Chidori. He has a straight line without causing an attack of opportunity from the Clone, and just one attack of opportunity from the Sand Arms. He uses Chakra-Release: A Thousand Flapping Birds (Belker’s Claws) and charges at Gaara. He raises one of his Sand Arms against Sasuke and sends it crashing down on Sasuke. Rolling a 5, it’s still not enough to hit Sasuke, who rolls for his Chidori, and gets an 11. Not enough to hit Gaara...

Sasuke is thrown back at the massive gush of sand that sprouts forward, towards him, knocking him prone. Gaara of the Desert grins, lurging forward slowly, rising the sand well above his head and preparing for the kill.
" You ... are .... mine ..... Uchiha Sasuke!"
Sasuke closes his eyes. His Chidori failed by inches, the jolts of electrical power touching Gaara's skin but not hitting. He is going to die now, here, without having the opportunity to fulfill his greatest desire: to kill his brother Itachi. His eyes opened, the Sharingan shoned like it never did. He was ready. Sasuke was ready.
"Not just yet!" cried a high, adrenalined filled voice, and a flash of blue and orange razed Sasuke's line of sight, diving straight into the sand malestrom. Gaara sneered, before his sand tentacles gripped and crushed the assailant, before it dissolved into a puff of smoke. Three more came, orange blazes that were all shattered by the angry assaults of sand. Sasuke felt someone grab him and raise him. "Sakura... I ... ".
" Don't speak", said Sakura, lifting him up and jumping on top of one of the trees. Besides Sasuke, stood a young man, his blonde spiky hair reflecing the light of the sun, and three pairs of whiskers emblanozed in his joyful, competitive face.
" My name is Naruto Uzamaki!" He sayd cheerfully pointing at Gaara "I will defeat you!"

I can't really say anything for certain, because game balance is not my strong subject, but it looks like what you've almost completely done is gestalt the characters with Sorcerer, except Gaara who is already a sorcerer. I don't think it is balanced to just leave them like that, though, because a level 3 Monk with spellcasting ability is not the equivalent of a 3rd level monk in other D&D campaigns.

As to the comment about making everyone a Ninja/whatever in gestalt, that's not a real good idea, as not everyone is shown to be about stealth. Chouji, Lee, Neji, Naruto, just to name a few, are not about stealth at all, and never show abilties that would warrant the Ninja class. Yes, they are technically ninjas in that they are Naruto Shinobi, but Naruto Shinobi are pretty much equivalent to mercenaries with some stealth training, and mostly destroying things training.

Gestalt is a system where the players take two classes at every level, gaining the best beneifits of each, such as a Rogue/Fighter getting Fighter's HD, BAB, Fort Save, and number of feats, while gaining the Rogue's Reflex saves, Sneak Attack, and other class features. It was first printed in Unearthed Arcana, as a possible system for playing with fewer than the suggested number of players.

What improvements do you think I could do Mindolin?
TheSuspect

11-29-07, 09:47 AM
Anyone knows where I can find the Gestalt rules online? Perhaps I could use them to shift at least Sasuke ...

By the way, some characters are quite easy to translate. Choji is a Barbarian. Just call the Rage ability "Meat Tank Technique" and bang, there you go. Lee is also a straight up fighter/monk (Gestalt perhaps), with a few cool Feats such and a lot of combat abilities. Just give him a Konoha Leaf Whirlwind feat that let's him, once per combat, give a +2 combat/bonus damage to one of his attacks. Just go with the flow. Neji is more complicated. He's again, a Monk/Sorcerer combo that I still don't really know how to use, probably Gestalt should be able to transcribe something for him. He should have the Energy Vortex spell has his Spinning Palm Trigram Total Defense Technique, and several Daze-like abilities to represent his ability to shutdown Chakra. Hinata should follow the same ability. Byokugan should be an Ability, that when used at level1, makes the character not passible of being flanked, give a +4 bonus to Spot and allows to see trought Illusions and to see the body chakra points.
Shikamaru is a Fighter type character with a created ability, that is kinda complicated. Ranged Technique, Ranged Touch Attack, 25ft maybe (+5ft per 2 lvls?), paralyzes target. The rest is flavor. Tenten is pretty much a Monk character with heaps of Dexterity and heaps of ranged weapons, with a Feat that allows her to summon her Twin Dragons and make, for example, 4 ranged attacks in a single round (+7/+4/+2/+1).

I also would like your opinion my friends in any way to develop a system to "ready" jutsu for usage. For example, wasting a Move Action to ready a Benign Transportation or a Clone Jutsu. This will waste more chakra then normal, but for example, if someone prepares a Benign Transportation Jutsu, in the next round if they are attacked, the automaticly teleport to another place, or change places with a clone/scenery set. Perhaps a save involved?

Actually, what I've seen Lee's Konoha Whirlwind as is a Trip attack. Just that. He doesn't even seem to have Improved Trip, since he never injured anyone as a direct result of the attack. Your idea on Chouji looks good, but make certain he gets Enlarge Person to represent the Multi-Size Jutsu.

With the Tenketsu strike, if you just go on the damage aspect, a 1st level Sorcerer can get it by making a spell like Chill Touch, except without dealing Strength damage, and make it do more damage with more "charges" for the spell. Maybe have it deal 1d4 damage for force damage. Actually, for the Rotation, a good ability from D&D would be one of the Iron Heart manuevers that lets you make an attack, with the result of said attack roll taking the place of your AC. For the shutdown of Chakra, I think there is a spell in the Dragonlance books that lets you take away the target's spellcasting ability.

As for readying an action to use a jutsu, it's already covered by readying an action in D&D, in the Player's Handbook on page 160. It's used with a Standard, Move, or Free action, so you can do it with just about any jutsu/spell, without increasing anything.
TheSuspect

11-30-07, 09:10 AM
Great ideias Mindolin. Chouji would of course have Enlarge Person, great thinking. I never tought of Lee having a simple Trip attack, but I also think it's great. Maybe a little more problematic is his Secondary Lotus Whirlwind ... it's a Jumping, Grapple Attack that deals more damage.
For Neji, for how long does Iron Heart stays? Is there a way to represent the fact that he can use it for several seconds (round) thus fending off several enemies? And his Tenketsu attacks (specially the ones that range in hundreds) are hard to do. Say anything if you find the spell that shuts down jutsu using...

This also gave me another doubt, that perhaps you Mindolin can answer, or anyone else, since you seem much more experienced than me in termks of Roleplaying. Is it too dangerous to adopt some spells or abilities from higher spell levels, for example, into lower levels?
For example, one of my villains is a missing-nin called Shiro Kamen (lvl3Sorcerer/lvl3 Monk) which is obssessed with masks. He was the first to develop Vanishing Facial Copy Technique, and also carries with him several white, grinning masks, which he uses in order to control and attack his foes. Shiro can use Mask Possession Technique to force the mask (Grapple Attack+Strenght Check?) into the face of his opponents, and when he manages it, the mask takes control of the person and it becomes in the command of Shiro (Dominate Person, 12th lvl caster). Since Shiro must succeed in an grapple attack and a strenght check, can this ability be considered too dangerous for a lvl6 character?
Mindolin

11-30-07, 12:27 PM
I don't have any experience in changing the required actions of spells, but why not just make it a Charm effect, rather than a Dominate Effect. That way you can use Charm Person as the spell. If you add in the requirements you suggested, and drastically shorten the duration, I can agree with a drop in the spell level, but not to level 1, which with the build you're suggesting would be required. The main problem I have with what you are suggesting is that, though he is a 6th level character, he is a 3rd level caster, but maybe you can work something out. I'll be thinking about how to work it out.

The Ironheart technique is only usable once per round, it's a counter, but I don't really recall any instances where he used it more than once per round. The Tenketsu strikes are actually used over a few rounds, maybe with a Daze ability to make certain that he is not counter attacked.

For Lee, what you might want to do is look at the Setting Sun school in the Tome Of Battle, specifically Ballistae Throw. Throw them in the air, and you've got the Primary Lotus. For the Ura Renge, what you need is some way of getting more than one action in a round. What you do is Ballistae Throw the enemy straight up into the air, followed by any form of quickened teleport or dimension door to represent his speed. Dimension Door is preferred, as it is short range enough to justify it as simply being his insane speed. Take the Feat Sun School from Complete Warrior, and you get an attack after teleporting. As a DM, I would allow Snap Kick to stack with that, thus what you do is this: Use Ballistae Throw, don't immediatly attack, hold the charge. Then, next round, you run up, do a tumble check to get underneath them, use Ballistae Throw to throw them in the air. Then you use Quickened Dimension Door to teleport behind them, using Sun School to get a free attack, followed by using the feat snap kick to get another one. If you have heroic surge, a feat from the Dragonlance Campaign Setting, you can use that to get a Move Action, move up to him, use Ballistae Throw, get him into the air, DD behind him, then continue with the full attack, +2 attacks.

Just found it, the spell to represent an inability to draw out chakra: the spell is Curse the Magi, forces the target to make a save each time they attempt to cast the spell, taking Constitution drain if you fail the save to cast the spell. It is found in Towers of High Sorcery, on page 45.
TheSuspect

11-30-07, 12:47 PM
I was thinking in a way of making it slightly less complicated: In order to use it, you had to hit a Critical Hit with a melee attack. After that, you need to beat a DC JUMP (relatively high, 15 or 18) to jump near him.
After that, it would be a Grapple Attack, and if successful, you would deal something like 2d10 of Impact Damage, and open up for the Gates and Primary Lotus.
Mindolin

11-30-07, 03:11 PM
Okay, the reason I said that is you deal your unarmed damage, represented by the kick that launched him in the air, then you hit him a couple more times, knocking him around like Lee did to Gaara in the Chunin Prelims, before having him fall 60 feet, taking 6d6 damage from the fall, and easier way to do it was to just use Ballista Throw and then leave him to fall, but I wanted to include the number of hits Rock Lee got in on Gaara then.

Actually, assuming just the Superior Unarmed Strike feat, you deal 1d8+ Strength modifier with the punch, then 6d6 damage when they go up, and 6d6 when they come down. It's a pretty good damage output ability.

Isn't it a little insecure to give such a damage potential to a lvl4 Gestalt Character?

Probably no one in my game will have it, but ...

This is a really large undertaking.

Honestly...I wonder if it would be easier to start from scratch and work out a new system based around some of the improvments we've been hearing for 4E, or from looking at the SW:Saga system.

I would think you would base it around the 3 types of jutsu.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/55/Chakra01.png

Image taken from the list of jutsu wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ninjutsu_in_Naruto_%28H-R%29#Multiple_Shadow_Clone_Technique).

All characters would need taijutsu, but could choose to branch off into ninjutsu or genjutsu. Some characters would branch off very early (Kurenai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_major_Naruto_characters#Kurenai_ Yuhi) comes to mind) while others (such as Rock Lee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Lee)) would never branch off and would continue in taijutsu.

This would be best represented by, in my opinion, a common base class with branching talent trees and a myriad of other classes as "specialist" classes. Similar to how gestault would grant the common abilities to all characters, this base class would grant the common abilities to all characters. Multiclassing would be important too, as otherwise it would greatly limit the type of character you could create. Open multiclassing allows for more varied characters, and if Naruto has anything it's varied characters (and character abilities).

Sakura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakura_Haruno) would be an example of a character who "lingered" in the base class and really nailed the basics before moving on.

What the details of this system would be...I have no idea. Like I said. This seems like a really big undertaking to me. Looking at psionics would indeed be a good place to start, as it has both psionic warriors and psionic "magic". Summoning and illusion rules would have to be expanded.

Just my two cents. If I come up with any stunning insights I'll post them.
Mindolin

11-30-07, 04:26 PM
Actually, that damage is in the hands of an 11th level character, as Ballista Throw is a 6th level manuever.

For level 4, they'll be using Mighty Throw, dealing 1d6 damage.

So, I decided to take a poke at this and try to work something out. My campaign, like the anime, is divided into chapters called "Arcs". Each session is called an "Episode" and it will be named accordingly. I need a strong opinion on the following data I am about to present, specially in terms of:

- What classes/lvl should each character be?
- What is the best Spell to replace jutsu?
- What are the best abilities to replace the ones I refer? (Such has Soratoshi's abilities).

My first Arc is called “The Fallen Village of Autumn Arc”, in which my players find themselves in a mission to find the legendary and dreaded Fallen Village of Autumn, created by the Haki family, a family banned from Konoha due to treason during the war with Wind, fifty years ago. The Village itself is runned by the descendants of the Haki family and is occupied by missing-nin, bandits, rogues and thieves, all bent on invading and destroying Konoha. Recently, the ninja from the Fallen Village of Autumn have begun attacking supply wagons to Konoha, and reports indicate that they somehow managed to obtain a large number of weapons and explosives, for possible terrorist activities in and nearby Konoha. The Fourth Hokage then sends the players to investigate the mysterious Dead Forest, and they find themselves in an area ridden by traps and strange passageways that lead them deeper into the mystery that is the Fallen Village of Autumn Arc.

The ninja from the Fallen Village of Autumn (considered to be bosses) all have Jutsu based on leafs. They are also master trap-makers, and they know their territory quite well. They are lead by the young descendant of the creators of the village, Haki Kyousei, as well as his brother, Haki Kei, and two other mysterious ninja that have recently taken the Haki name from themselves: the violent and unpredictable Haki Sukoshi and the sicken and almost always bed-ridden, wooden puppet-master Haki Soratoshi. The four form a strange kind of dysfunctional family, with bitter hatreds among themselves, different agendas and conflicting personalities. Many other ninjas and bandits exist in the Fallen Village, most of them fugitives or road bandits that prey on supply wagons and travellers.

The main characters that I have to find corresponding Jutsu at this time are:

Haki Sukoshi
Seen has the young, unwanted mother figure in the Haki family, Sukoshi is seen more like a stranger sorceress than a ninja. She is brash, loud and uncontrollable, often exploding on subordinates and showing a cruel, miser side, and finding only comfort in her brother’s arms. She as the strange ability to control roots, which some see as paranormal. She share’s a deep hatred for Konoha with the rest of her family, which eventually, leads her to attack the PC’s team deep in the Dead Forest.
Earth-Release: Earth Root Capture (Entangle)
Earth-Release: Exploding Root Wall (Shield)
Earth-Release: Root Prison (Hold Person)

Haki Kei
Kyousei older brother, Kei is a big, strong-headed, violent and rowdy warrior, often seen has the black sheep of the Haki family. He cares little for violent and old hatred against Konoha, and seems to behave more like a simplistic bandit: it is him that coordinates the raids against the supply wagons. Carrying around his large woodcutter’s axe, he respects his brother only due to his father will: he will not think twice about killing him in order to take his place. His Jutsu is a powerful illusion-technique that forces his attacker to think that he is twice the distance from them has he really is, by twisting the perspective from which they see him using chakra and light sources. This allows him to approach his enemies much undetected, and to easily dodge most projectiles and attacks.
Leaf-Based, Illusion-Technique: Deep Forest Enhancement (?)

Haki Soratoshi
Soratoshi origin’s are shrouded in mystery. It is only known that he was “adopted” by Sukoshi at some point during her early life, and his now considered to be a part of the Haki family. Although she adopted him, today she shows little respect from him, and most of the time either scorns him or simply ignores him. Soratoshi, in his mid-twenties now, still behaves like a young-child: he is always sick and bed-ridden, is very pale and physically weak, and is always shown being carried around in his blanket made of woven green and red leaves, giggling and smiling at everything that surrounds him. Soratoshi main attack is to use wooden carvings in the shape of birds, to which he attaches chakra strings, and order to fly with their sharp beaks against attackers. His blanker supplies an excellent camouflage, and he often sits quietly and playfully spinning his birds and driving them against any one who approaches the Fallen Village. He also has the ability of using Explosive Birds, with Explosive Tags attached to them, to make them explode upon impact. To him, it is nothing more than an innocent game.
Chakra-Release: Aerial Puppet Strings
Puppet-Technique: Exploding Bird of Prey

Haki Kyousei
The leader of the Fallen Village of Autumn and the main opponent for the PC’s, Kyousei is a young but incredibly devoted missing-nin. He inherited from his father the hatred for Konoha, and his extensive knowledge in terrorist tactics and combat expertise. He built and reinforced many parts of the Fallen Village of Autumn, and is now planning to strike a powerful and decisive strike against Konoha by using a great quantity of explosives to detonate Hokage Mountain. He as a cynical and calm face, and his demeanour often indicates that he is somewhat of an obsessed character. He rarely smiles, speaks very slowly and often lingers around phrases that speak of either his father, or Konoha. He delights in the opportunity in killing the PC’s team, since that will send Konoha a message of how serious he is taking the mission of destroying it. He is probably the greatest and most able user of Haki Jutsu, mainly due to his father tutelage.
Leaf-Based: Leaf Shuriken (Hail of Stone?)
Leaf-Based: Leaf Clone (Silent Image?)
Leaf-Based: Leaf Whirlwind Mirage (Blur)
Leaf-Based, Earth-Release: Dead Leaf Wind Field (Fog Cloud)
Leaf-Based, Earth-Release: Violent Leaf Prison (Hold Person)

Sounds pretty cool suspect. What mechanics are you using?
TheSuspect

12-03-07, 02:26 PM
Kinda depends. Pretty much most characters are always a combination of ?/Sorcerer or ?/Wizard, Gestalt PC's. The only difference is that Sorcerer ones are naturally born ninja and use their Wisdom (instead of Char) modifier, like Naruto or Sasuke. Wizard ones are the genius ninja, born from hard-study and dedication, and use their Intelligence modifier, like Sakura does. Some characters are just Sorcerers (like Sukoshi, since she is too weak to fight) or Fighters/Monks/Rangers/Barbarians, and even multiclass ones (like Kei, who is a lvl2Barbarian/lvl1 Sorcerer who can only use one technique).

All jutsus are adaptations from Spells, all from different sources: Player's Handbook, Spell Compendium, Dragon Magic...

Just for the record:

Haki Sukoshi: lvl3 Sorcerer
Haki Kei: lvl2 Barbarian/lvl1 Sorcerer
Haki Soratoshi: lvl1 Expert
Haki Kyousei: Gestalt lvl4 Monk/Sorcerer

I also have heaps of translated "monsters" to more adaptable foes: basic ninja are "goblins" and "orcs", often armed with kunai or basic weaponry. Gnolls and lizardmen often represent more difficult opponents, and I'm saving Bugbears from later.

Do you start with flavor and then go through the book to find mechanics that work, or do you start with a particular "shtick" already in the mechanics and then build the fluff around that?
TheSuspect

I go purely flavor. I envision the several Arcs has I see them, and the several characters. Then, I try to create them from an existing basis. Has of now, I have the "Autumn Arc", in the Fallen Village of Autumn, and then the "Night Arc", in the Hidden Night Village, in the Land of the Moon, and finally, i also have the "Heritage Arc", a small campaign that covers the appearance of one of the main villains (Kouseki Hari),and also the Chuunin exam and the reveal of which of my players has a Sealed Tailed Beast in him.

Flavor rules since I try at most to get extremely original characters, in comparison with the level established by the anime and the manga. Pretty much, I got an all array of crazy ninjas with the most varied, wacky abilities. I just got to find ways to bring them to life using D&D techniques. Most of them are one-shot ninjas, for a single battle (except a few lucky ones like Yoru and Sukin Boketsu). But they such a varied range of possibilities, each fight is always something different. Take a simple Gestalt Monk/Sorcerer, and give him Fists of Stone (Spell Compendium: +6STR for Attack Rolls, Grapple Checks, Crushing Items. 1d6 damage Strenght Bonus). Now, just make sure no one else in the game as this ability. Give him a cool name, a cool name technique (Earth-Release: Massive Crush Fist Technique), and a good descriptor, and make him stand out (Call him Ishi, which means "stone") and give him a strange apparel (stalagmite-like protusions from his shoulders, rock-like skin, stone teeth, battered battle armor) and you got yourself a killer battle against a few players.

I like it. I just wish I could do it with 4E (well, SW:Saga) mechanics.

Sukoshi seems more of a druid to me, than a sorceress.

I wouldn't necessarily make it to where noone else has that ability, just describe it differently for the different people. For example, for Ishi, as you call him, it turns his arm into stone. For Samuru it just draws energy into his arm, expanding the muscles, and for Kaito, it envelops his arm in a light blue field that adds more punch to his attack
TheSuspect

12-05-07, 07:29 AM
I was thinking about creating another one that used that ability but it was because he had a massive, mechanic-like arm. Just thinking wild things.

Mandolin, any opinions on the spells that miss from my first campaign?
Mindolin

12-05-07, 09:19 AM
Actually, the mechanical arm would be a great idea for the Village Hidden in the Gears, a village comprised solely of warforged and awakened golems.

Chakra-Release: Aerial Puppet Strings: Control Object (psionic power)
Puppet-Technique: Exploding Bird of Prey: Exploding Runes on bird
Leaf-Based, Illusion-Technique: Deep Forest Enhancement: Temporal Shield ( Legends of the Twins, page 26) Either this or Displacement, Temporal Shield grants a shield bonus, Displacement makes you seem where you are not, but neither makes it easier to sneak up on someone.

Something else you may want to do, purely for the flavor, is use a classification system like they do in Naruto, with Itachi and all Akatsuki as S ranked Ninja. I worked out a system like this based off of Yu Yu Hakusho:

E-: 1-2
E: 3
E+: 4-5
D-: 6-7
D: 8
D+: 9-10
C-: 11-12
C: 13
C+:14-15
B-:16-17
B: 18
B+: 19-20
A-: 21-22
A:23
A+:24-25
S-:26-27
S: 28
S+: 29-30

I got these numbers based off of Raizen, as the Yuyu Hakusho equivalent of Demogorgon, at CR 33, thus I based everything else off of 30 levels.

Thanks for all the tips Mindolin. I love the Letter-Based Jutsu Classification, and I'm going to try to adapt it to my games. And also thanks for the spells substitution in my first Campaign Arc. I'm gonna use Displacement for Kei. But I also got a question ... Is there any way to allow lower-level characters to use higher level Jutsu? For example, take Naruto ... he can use Shadow Replication Technique, when it is an Jonin Level technique. This also goes for Kei. Kei is a lvl3 character using a lvl3 spell (Displacement). Should this be sporadicly allowed, or or example, one could allow it if you can trade chakra points for ir? For example, to use lvl3 Displacement, you would have to be obligated to have 6x Lvl1 Spells Slots and waste them all. Or 3x lvl2 spell slots.

By the way, just out of fun, here's a VERY SHORT LIST of some of the enemies my players are going to face.

Kouseki Hari – A megalomaniac ninja who wants to kill the Five Kages in order to become a god on earth. Has the ability to manipulate the quartz in the soil.
Ibara Toge – A woman of extraordinary beauty, she is quite considered to be the most beautiful woman to ever lived. She is in fact so stunningly beautiful, that men that look at her often become hypnotized. She is completely loyal to Kouseki and believes him to be a god amongst men, and she follows him constantly. Besides her striking beauty and her hypnotic voice, she is also a very skilled hand-to-hand fighter and she uses a special red umbrella that can work as a weapon, a shield, or even to use her Spinning Dragon Eye Technique, an illusionary technique that causes opponents to freeze in their tracks.
Shokan Dokuro – A tattooed missing-nin, he is 300 years old. He can create tattoos that give the wearer incredible abilities (Kami Tattoo) at a price: they eventually wear out and become Death Gate Tattoos, that allow Shokan to kill the wearer and drain out all of his chakra, regenerating him and extending his life span. He can also command the hundred of tattoos that cover his skin has defense or weapons, create ink clones, or even fly with ink wings on his back.
Yoru – A hunter-nin from the Hidden Night Village, he is one of the last of the Bloodeye family and a psychotic, homicidal young hunter. He can use a technique similar to the one used by the Kiba family to turn into a cat-like, fast and stealthy human-creature, and can use his Bloodline, Ketsueki Manako (Blood Eye) to follow enemies by seeing their blood trail. He has a Kami Tattoo from Shokan that gives him Nine Lives, thus giving him the nickname “Nine Lives Yoru”.
Sukin Boketsu – A missing-nin from the Hidden Night Village, he is apparently immortal. He uses a small spear to attack but does not seem to use any Jutsu, but everytime he is defeated, his entire body turns into a rubber-like substance and a new, fully recovered Sukin uses a Kunai to rip the old skin, emerging from inside completely recovered. Apparently, he can do this indefinitely.
Abura Uchitoru – A massive and huge warrior ninja, this towering giant is amazingly obese and obnoxious. Although not very fast, he has the ability to control his stomach acids, and can spit out either Acid-Release: Acid Bomb or Acid-Release: Corrosive Expanding Breath. His skin as also taken a somewhat rubber-like consistency, and most normal weapons and attack don’t work on him, usually being rebounded back. He can also use his Mouth Expansion Technique to open further his massive jaw and swallow opponents whole.
Ni – Another strange hunter-nin from the Hidden Night Village, he is obsessed by pairs, doubles and the number 2. He has split personality disorder. He has long bluish hair that always covers one half of his face, thus his two personalities. The left side of the face has several piercings, an homicidal grin and a red eye, and his called “Number One”. The right side of the face is a stern, serious, all-business face with a blue eye called “Number Two”. They both attack with different weapons (NºOne with a whip, and NºTwo with a short sword) and cannot coexist at the same time in the same body. NºOne is a masochist, psychotic and sadistic murderer, while Number Two is a strategist, calm and patient warrior, with even a notion of honour. Ni can also use Mind To Body Division Technique to separate both personalities in different physical bodies, allowing them to attack more enemies (although they rarely agree with each other).
Kagai Hea – The youngest-daughter of the leader of the Hidden Night Village, she is an introspective, shy and elusive girl, which is in fact very scared of the dark. In so, she developed specific chakra-controlling techniques that allow her to control her long, black hair. She can use it to grapple enemies (Mane Growth Technique), create a shield of hair (Dark Mane Shield Technique), fire hidden hair-pins from her hair (Secret Pin Technique), or launch strands of hairs as wires (Longshot Mane Technique).
Kabukimaru - A wicked puppeter from the dreaded Dead Theatre Coup, he is an incredibly skilled craftsman and and amazing puppeteer. He is a dwarf, so he he's always seen in his kabuki-dressed actor puppeter, Shuyuu. He possesses a total of ten puppets, most of which he carries in scrolls around his waist, which he can summon with Puppet-Technique: Stage Attack Technique. He mainly uses Shuyuu for attacks, but can also summon a large spider-like Puppet, and an old-man puppet. His eight puppet is a dog-like puppet called Ryoyuu that hides inside of him the scroll for the last puppet, a Colossal puppet, the size of an eight story building.
Shiro Kamen - The leader of the Dead Theatre Coup and a great kabuki actor, he is obssessed with masks. Little is known about him, other than he cant dominate people by using his Summon Technique: Leech of Will Mask Technique. He can also use Dance of a Thousand Masks, and is known to be able to produce clones of himself by using his masks.
Yowakusuru – A Sound Ninja. He rarely speaks, but possesses a device mounted around his throat that amplifies all sound he attempts to produce, so he can use this device as a weapon or a way to confuse enemies. In the back of the device there is also a spin-button that allows him to control the volume. It is said, that if he screamed at maximum volume, he would kill everything around him, including himself.
Kihai Hade – A Sound Ninja that accompanies Yowakusuru. His weapon is an oversized tuning fork which can produce a very powerful sound that can shatter glass and cause internal damage. It is in fact so powerful, that he as to use earmuffs in order to prevent the sound from shattering his bones. This makes him the perfect partner for Yowakusuru.
Kemono Ryoushimaru – A crazy water hunter-nin, Ryoushimaru is a dreaded Water-Hunter and a Missing-Nin from the Land of Mist. He usually appears to be a tired man with a small staff, a typical conical straw hat, a large walking staff and a huge leather-strapped sack in his back. The sack is in fact so heavy, he cannot go for more than 1000 metres with one without resting, or it would brake his spine. In fact, his walking staff hides a fishing rod, and he can use his technique of Hunting Chakra String Attack to “fish” his opponent and use his right glove (it has a hidden reel in it) to attempt to fish his opponent. If that fails, he can resort to bursting his sack and revealing his main weapon: a huge gauntlet made of shark and whale bone that works as both a shield and a weapon. It has a shark jaw mounted on it that can grasp and bite the opponent, and it hides three chain-attached harpoons to hit the opponent and bring him to the jaw. If all else fails, then if there is a nearby body of water, Ryoushimaru can use his Jaw Transformation Technique and become a sea-like monster, with a huge shark-like jaw. He is able to regenerate his body if close to water, and can use techniques such has Water-Release: Water Sprout Technique, and Water-Release: Water Vortex Technique.

I'm also taking ideias on how to include an Akatsuki-like organization into my game. All ideias are welcomed, and I really want to include it in the nearby future.

that's a "very short list"?

Your players are going to see a lot of fighting! :)

No problem, actually, that's not really much for the Jutsu classification so much as character power classification, for the jutsu it would look more like this

E 0-1st level spells
D 2nd level spells
C 3rd-4th level spells
B 5th-6th level spells
A 7th-8th level spells
S 9th level spells and epic spells.

As for Akatsuki, you need to answer a few questions first, such as what the goal is for them, are the loyal to each other or constantly scheming? Is there anything they have in common, such as use of fire techniques, patron deity, or that sort of thing. Design the group around that and it works, one thing I'll be doing with my group is having them fight the Brotherhood of the Black Flame. They are psionic monks who were trained in the Black Flame, which is pretty much any psionic power using fire, with the Corupt Spell metamagic feat applied(changed to be a psionic feat).

I suggest you get access to the DMGII, they offer a trait for NPCs that works for Naruto, it gives the ability to cast a single 5th level spell once per day. It's called Past Life, or something like that. Another idea is to just use Blur, and have a feat to where he gets access to a single 2nd level spell once per day as a spell like ability, and just call it a Kekkai Genkai. It's what I'm currently using for one of the characters in the game I'm running, where he gained a bloodline called the Blood Mirror, pretty much Sharingan but for Taijutsu.

Mindolin, since you are going to use Psionics, aren't your characters going to start fairly high in levels?

I have no ideia how Psionics work, so I'm just shooting in the dark here..
Mindolin

12-07-07, 03:04 PM
Actually, my characters started off at level 1, and are going gestalt at level 8. Based off of Corupt Spell only raising spell level by 1, and Enlarge Spell bringing it up by one but not increasing power point cost as Enlarge Power, it would be quite easy to get them to use some of the lower level Energy Powers. If I were making these as normal enemies, not in Gestalt, I would likely make them as Monk1/Psion 3, so as to grant them limited combat skill, but also having the ability to launch a few Fire Push or Fire Stuns, or as it would be for them Dark Fire Push, Dark Fire Stun, and Dark Fire Ray.

So, how goes anyone else's Naruto based campaign? Mine is going pretty well, with the characters soon to take the Chunin exams. I added a new house rule for us to where a character gains a feat at 1st level, allowing them to cast any one 1st level spell once per day, as a 1st level caster, and once they gain a level in a spellcasting class they either gain a single 1st level spell slot, or 2 power points. They can also choose Martial Manuevers, as either Martial Study or Martial Stance.
