| Mist-Bound08-10-07, 04:44 PM | I had a recent rough idea for a campaign setting, and I really need some advice from more experienced DMs on putting it all together. I especially need help because I really only have a few rough fundamentals for it, which I'll outlist below. There is one main continent around which the campaign is centered; there's more to the world, but an impenetrable barrier (erected in a long-distant past, by who I'm not sure yet) that encloses the continent, too high for mortal spellcasters to fly over. The campaign has four, comparatively unique connected planes. The Infernum, or the Pit, is essentially the Abyss and the Nine Hells- it's the Plane of Evil, from which crawl the Evil-typed Outsiders. The Celestial Bastion, naturally, is its counterpart, home of the Good-typed Outsiders. There are also two "neutral" planes; the Wildlands and the Dreaming, which can be considered the planes of Material Existence and Spiritual/Mental Existence. The Wildlands is a mixture of the four elemental planes and a neutral afterlife plane, whilst the Dreaming mixes elements of a neutral afterlife plane with Limbo, Shadow and Ethereal. Outsiders from the Widlands and the Dreaming are a combination of "natives" and "settlers" from the Infernum and the Celestial Bastion that have begun to adapt to the new plane. In all cases, the Outsiders of this setting are looking to be more unique than the various ones from the Monster Manuals, and I really need advice here- especially as it ties into a homebrew "race" I was intending to use for this setting. Inspired by the Farspawn feat tree from Lords of Madness, as well as the Demonic/Diabolic feat trees from the Fiendish Codexi, these "Blooded" are the resultant union of mortals and Outsiders, their supernatural heritage becoming apparent through the development of "bloodgifts", represented in game by taking feats. So, is anyone interested in helping me out? |

To go into more specific details, off the top of my head... *A name for the setting *Specific details on the planes & their inhabitants *How certain spells might be altered, given the different planar setup -As you just pointed out, ethereal & shadow plane-based spells don't work without actual planes attached to them. The options that present themselves to me are to either remove them or to modify them to use the Dreaming instead (things like See Ethereal might instead allow the user to see into the Dreaming as it "overlaps" with their current position, while Darkness might function by drawing umbral matter from the segments of the Dreaming focused on darkness and/or nightmares) *Setting up the actual details of the world itself |
