DM:Ok, you're ambushed by three goblins and a bugbear.
PCs:(Gee I hope I don't get stuck with the bugbear)
DM: Ok, [rolls] Tom gets a goblin [rolls],Pete, you get the archer goblin, and[rolls] Tom you're now the focus of two attacks from goblins.
Tom: Well as long as I don't catch the bugbear's eye too, I should be fine.
DM: [rolls] Tom, no one likes you this time around, the bugbear charges you.

Meh, it's ok. Rolling to decide who attacks who. It may even be better to just play the tactis game, attacking the closest PC, but the terror of battle realy doesn't translate. This is why I've purchased one of these

Now what possible use could a simple nerf revolver have? I call it monster rulette. Load one dart. Spin the chamber and keep the location of the dart a secret. Then quickly fire ate every one at the table. With every click, your PCs will flinch, and when they actually feel the dart, or see it fly, two words will run through their head. Oh. Crap. It's really just reverse meta-gaming, something I've found works very well. Have fun, and remeber, not in the eyes, or at your pets!

That's...

A really...

Unique? Way of doing it.

I should try it. With actual darts though. :D

Nah, those old jarts they used to make before they were outlawed. You know, the metal foot long darts with plastic fins, about the size of a crossbow bolt.

Can't imagine why they got banned..

OT: I don't really understand this. every encounter for every monster you do this? Or just select ones? Or you were just bored and this seemed like a good idea at the time?

Rolling randomly to see who the opponents attack? I guess I am one of the few people who favor DnD for the tactical encounters, then...

Actually, we usually try to play the monsters with some intelligence or at least instinct. If it truly a random situation (a giant throwing rocks at the party, perhaps), we might roll randomly.
One carry over we have in our group from when we starting outplaying years & years ago (like 1975), is that a monster which is attacking one opponent but could reach another, will change to the other opponent on a roll of "4' on a d6. No one really knows why this is, or even remember show it came to be, but it is one of our house rules that we've kept thru the years.

Unless you prefer it being random, you could also try being logical about it. Say Tom were to walk around the corner and gets ambushed by the Goblins and the Bugbear first. Obviously, since they see him foremost, their attention would be on him, unless a greater threat is recognized. That's how I conduct it, in any case; a bugbear isn't going to randomly chose the strong, healthy fighter of the weak, poisoned spellcaster, especially if the latter is the first it sees.

However there are a few factors to take into account: Creature behavior, attitude, alignments, auras, special abilities of both the monster and the players, etc., but I don't doubt a well-prepared DM can include those as well.

Interesting. Ok, maybe I'll keep one chambered at all times so i know who it'll hit for more "reasonable" monsters...
