| TacoClone02-24-08, 05:18 PM | World of Otia http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b250/TacoClone/Pics/LabeledOtia.png Alright, so, I was trying to make it so there was a place to adventure will all kinds of terrain and types of political and magic structures. I should probably tell you guys a brief summary about each area, but I'll just sum each up in a word or two. Telai'Ra Wastes - Frostfell Calim - Tyrannical Empire Felland - Dwarf Lands (partially abandoned) Rimark - Elfy Magic Forest Nuella - Standard Medieval Kingdom Ima'Na Plains - open fields, barbarians and tribes Serion Islands - Fer Pirates, Arrr! Reem - City-States (Reminiscent of Rome in Political Structure) Talamh Wilds - Savage Lands, Full of Ancient Ruins Maha'Al - Hindu-Influenced Area Mesha'Ta - Psionics and Pact Magic-Nobles (Similar to Sarlona) Tala'Ma Desert - Dead Space (This and the other two are Dark Sun influenced) Rala'Hani Jungle - Er...It's a Jungle... Isle of Knowledge - Needs Better Name, Contains a Campaign Original Race, Plus a City of Portals to all the Plains Zenbu - Japan So, yeah, any improvements you guys can think of, both for countries/lands and type of terrain I haven't used. Thanks in Advance! -Taco |

You have a wide variety of terrain, etc. Also, roads and rivers, being the major transportation lines, should be added in. Also, inland lakes, and a scale measured in day's travel on foot. BTW, you are aware that Zenbu means "all" in Japanese? |

Yes, I know. However, I plan to do most of the cities, roads, lakes, and the like as my PCs start to adventure in the actual places. At the moment, trying to do so would be too daunting a task for me. I like to set up the whole world, and then work on the minor specifics one by one. Thanks for your comment. This is a third manifestation of "Otia", and I think I'm pleased with it and will use this as the final version. BTW, you are aware that Zenbu means "all" in Japanese? Well, originally I had taken it from a web translator that said it meant "Nation", so I guess all is the direct translation of it. I did that when I couldn't think of anything to name it and me and my PCs wanted an Oriental Adventures campaign. We stuck with the name ever since and their it into the world of Otia when I decided to create a whole campaign setting. Um...I'll probably start mapping out either the Telai'Ra Wastes or Nuella first, as those are the two most created areas...except maybe for Zenbu (because I've already had a campaign there from before). So, I'll probably post one of those three country maps in the near future. However, when I do, they're not going to have ALL of the cities that are included in their borders. Just ones that I've either A. Used, or B. Created as Major Settlements or Plot Hooks. Also, when I post them, please feel free to comment on ideas for cities and/or things you think the country is lacking (ie, if you think it needs another city or to to focus on resources or trade or whatnot). EDIT: I don't remember where travel rules are, and I'd have trouble scaling the whole map anyways. Let's just say that Zenbu is a large place, and it's the smallest country on the map. Any suggestions for scales? |
| Darth Syntax02-25-08, 01:03 AM | On the Issue of Scale: I am going to assume an earth-like planet for the moment as I make my suggestions. If, however this is not the case with your world, let me know and I might be able to adjust them accordingly Given that you have, in the northern portion of the map, a large apparently frozen area and a jungle in the south, it would be fairly safe to assume that from the top of your map to the bottom is about 90° of latitude or about 6,210 miles. Considering you map is a rectangle 5.397 inches high, and 4.73 inches wide, I have made the following calculation as regards total area: 33,798,071.7 square miles. To give you an idea of how large this is 20,845,655.54 square miles in area. A reasonable scale for you map might be one of the following: 1 inch = 1150.64 miles 0.869 inches = 1000 miles http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3108/2290882216_0fb5baf063_o.jpg |

Thank you for your help. I'm going to assume about 1000 miles across is good for a country, though it might actually be a bit much after seeing that it'd take 42 days to travel across it. I guess that's what horses and airships are for, no? Thanks for your help (and you got to show off your crazy knowledge of approximate distances and size of the planet). I'll hopefully have one of the country maps up by Tuesday. |
| Naderion02-25-08, 06:21 AM | The only thing that I would do different is, that there is only one dwarven nation, only one elven nation, and only one human kingdom. It's not completely unrealisitc, as 2000 years ago, there was the roman empire, the persian empire, and the barbarians of northern europa and not much else, but maybe you'd like to add some elven and dwarven "colonies" which are not part of the main realm. Strikes me as rather odd, that all elves and dwarves form only one single political unit. |
| Bergtann02-25-08, 10:40 AM | I recommend downloading the Fractal Terrains demo, and generate a few worlds untill you find one with an area you are satisfied with. Then fill in that. Such things as mountain passes and big rivers which appear on the map can give a lot of inspiration too. |

Strikes me as rather odd, that all elves and dwarves form only one single political unit. Well, actually, I did mean for Elves and Dwarves to be all throughout. I also am toying with the idea of having a HUGE underdark, where every mountain range is connected and the dwarves have spread out to each place (in Zenbu the dwarves have an ancient hold in that main mountain that you can just barely make out). Mostly, I made it that those countries/areas are where they originated from. Also, there's a lot of humans and other races moved into those places, and vice versa, though elves and dwarves still typically stay to the woods and mountains respectively. And, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get another map up as soon as I thought I was due to a school project I had forgotten about, but we'll see. Thanks all for your advice/comments. Slight side note, what exactly is Fractal Terrains demo. I'd google it, but I'm busy. |
| Bergtann02-27-08, 12:13 PM | It generates world maps which are absolutly beautiful! Zoomable to the n'th degree, pass your pointer over a spot to get elevation, climate, etc. Lovely thing. |
| Etarnon02-28-08, 04:43 AM | Good deal. Good luck with your game. I love mapping the campaign, most of all... for any game I am doing. |
| The ShapeLess One02-28-08, 02:21 PM | Looks like a good map to me. |
