kwanzaabot 02-22-07, 08:55 PM	Okay. I'm trying to write up an interesting creation story for my dwarves. However, I got nothin'. :( Basically long ago, a group of elves travelled to the northernmost continent of the world. This continent used to be the home of an incredibly ancient and powerful race (who happened to create the elves and humans) but this ancient race was wiped out by an evil god, who is also long-gone. Anyway, these elves travelled to this land, and "something" happened, and turned them into two groups- the dwarves, and the goblins. So... ideas? How could I get this to work? Divine intervention? Evolution? Gamma rays? Radioactive spiders? I gotta go to work now, but this thread better be 6 pages long by the time I get back. >:(

But I don't like mutant elves being dwarves and goblins. It feels too Lord of the Rings movie-ish to me. I'd do something like Disc World's origin for the dwarves. That's just me though.

I'm really inclined to go with the divine intervention, except that my dwarves are athiests (their clerics are agnostic ;P). Magic could work.. i've just gotta figure out a way for it to make sense. Unfortunately, i'm not too familiar with Discworld. I want to read the books, but i've just never gotten around to it. :(
Evil DM Mk3 02-23-07, 11:34 AM	Discworld dwarves where made by Tak, a deiaty who the belive created the whole of existance, then the laws then men, dwarves and trolls (in a roundabout way, whole novel of story to explain the exact deatils of this and precipitate events). Then he went away. Tak does not require dwarves think aobut im, he requires that they THINK. He is a god who made a race and told them to be atheists.
GoriceXII 02-23-07, 11:47 AM	How about that they were both fleshcrafted by some other race that enslaved them, one group to be miners and the other to be craftsmen? Then threw off their shackles but had vicious disagreements and so the two 'races' now loathe one another?
damixmastermike 02-23-07, 12:03 PM	kk, Best Idea: The Elves came into an area wherer there was co-planar-link to a demiplane where time flows at 10000x normal speed (maybe add some extra zeroes for good measure). After several years of evloution, some of the Elves evolved into superior beings: Dwarves, while others, not so much. One of the powerful Goblins, frustrated that his people were getting the short end of the stick, severed the link and/or destroyed the demiplane all together. did I mention I like Dwarves?
krichaiushii 02-23-07, 12:06 PM	The Dwarves were bred as a food source and work animal (burrowing/mining) by some ancient evil race (aboleth, illithid, elves, whatever). Unbeknownst to the evil race, the Dwarves were seen and claimed by a godlike being needing worshippers. He gifted them with thought, memory, tool use, and a divine spark. They rebelled, almost annihilated their former masters, and have been mining to the glory of this godlike being ever since.
