Perm Abound [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-01-07, 01:11 PM Hey all. I have an idea for a campaign setting and I'm looking for feedback.

The basic idea is a world where a gung-ho Arcane/Religious sect becomes extremely giving with castings of Permanency in an attempt to better the world by optimizing human potential through magic. In response to this, another sect springs forth Dispeling everything they can, fearing a magical overload in the world may cause bad things to happen.
The Poo really hits the fan when the second group are proven partially correct when, from deep in the planets core, a gigantic pulse of magical energy hits the world basically casting "Greater Permancy" on all spells in affect at that time. Since the initial pulse now more of the same pulses happen every few years, seemingly at random.

The mechanic I have in mind is a Feat that can only be selected by 1st level characters that grants "Greater Permanency" on any 0th or 1st level spell with a duration greater than 1 round. The feat can be purchased multiple times but only during character creation. Each time the feat is taken can either grant another 0th or 1st level spell or increase the spell level of the first feat by 1.

Also, in the game I run I have absolutely no plans on refering to the WotC list of spells approved for Permancy, like ever.

I'm hoping to run this in a couple months if I can get things set in place properly.
Thoughts? Ideas?

10-02-07, 10:45 PM How would a permanent Fireball work,could you cast it at will or would it fly thru the air without going off.Maybe the permed fireball would just hang there like a big continual flame?RANDOM THOUGHTS.

10-03-07, 10:59 AM Fireball woudln't be a spell that could be made permanent due to it's duration of instantaneous. A Flaming Sphere, however, would just kind of hang around going where commanded. I realize how powerful this would be but that's what I'm looking for. The whole idea came about as I was wondering how to create certain comic book heroes in D&D. It evolved it this "what if everyone..." kind of an idea. I'm picturing little things like the Inn having Perm Unseen Servant and big things like a lonely hermit living on an Island alone because his Perm Create Water won't let him live anywhere else. Any ideas?
